  1. Intel HD Graphics 4600: Graphics base freq: 350 MHz Graphics Max Dynamic freq: 1.2 GHz Max FPS in any AAA shooter: A whopping 10 FPS! I decided to buy a computer in two takes. I have yet to buy a graphics card for it.
  2. I only realised that after applying the compound... Oh well... Either way, I now know how to strip paint which might come in usefull in the future.
  3. Hey guys! I'm painting my server case as a bit of fun and I'll post all the updates over here as a build log (painter's log? (・_・; ) ) Since it is a server, I thought that painting a formal server attire for it is only approipriate (+ it's very easy to paint, as this is my first venture into PC painting/modding) Basics: The server in question is a desktop size HP case. (I'll paste the model and link later) The only change from the default setup is the storage: stock HDD -> WD Red 2TB as primary storage stock card reader -> some seagate 2TB as secondary storage The plan: Strip all the paint from the outside of the case Use sand paper and paint the primer Spray the white part of the design using painter's tape (masking tape? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) Spray the black part of the design Paint the finish First step - Paint stripping: At the moment I have black matte and white matte spraypaint and have already started stripping paint. I'm using a paint stripper in the form of a gel. It requires at least 3 mm of gel spread evenly, and so far I have noticed only problems with edges of the case. I most likely have not put enough gel on those areas, and will have to redo those parts. Photos of the case: (the first step in progress) I will continously update this post and respond to any questions below. Hope you'll like it! \(^o^)/
  4. Hi, decided to finally introduce myself after using this forum sporadically over the past three years. PC building was my first real hobby and I have built a couple for the people I know. I'll update my profile later tomorrow, since right now it is three in the morning over here and my cat is going bonkers. I'm doing a case mod for my server which I'll also post later tomorrow. EDIT: Well, almost three years...¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  5. Hey guys, I'm setting up my first NAS server on an old HP computer. It is a single disk setup for local backups. I set it up according to a guide. When I log in into the file manager the apparent size of the partition is 52 MiB, which is much less of the advertised 1.6 TB of free hard drive space. It seems that the FM points to /dev/xmd0 instead of the UFS partition, but that's just a guess. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks Screenshots: File Manager: List of Space on all partitions: Information | Partitions:
  6. Welp! I just realized they are color-coded. Well that's one question answered. But the first question still stands. Does the 5V must also be connected for the HDD to work properly? Connecting any additional power is a lot of work so I'm asking to lower my amount of work.
  7. (The reason this topic is in this section is that the cables I'm using are from a power supply. Also I'm SUPPLYING POWER to a HDD, so it seems appropriate. ) The situation: I'm currently on holidays and I need to power a 12V HDD to my laptop. I'm using a regular SATA to USB 3.0 controller connected to my laptop. The "powered" USB socket only provides the standard 5V, so I decided that I will DIY the solution with stuff I took with me. (I'm in a small town in Italy, so there is little hope of a tech shop other than WIND, Vodafone, etc.) The method: I'm going to use a regular power supply from "something" ( I don't know what yet) that supplies 12V that is needed to start the HDD. From the power supply to the mod cable I will run a regular cable with isolation tape. I'll get the 5V from some regular USB charger. Now the questions follow: Numero Uno: To power a 12V HDD, do I still need the 5V? (SATA provides both on different pins) Numero Due: Which socket provides which voltage on this cable? (OCZ Z-series 1000W Modular Power Supply) Pictures will be below this text in ~ 10 minutes. Also, if you think my method is abominably stupid and there are other ways, like buying an external enclosure: I know. But I wanted to try this out. P.S.: The manual has a list for the SATA connector pins, but not for the propertiary/PSU side of the cable.
  8. Thanks for the helpful posts. Both sites together contain everything I was looking for. PRAD.DE has reviews of the pro-grade monitors I was looking for, thanks @. @Geekazoid - Have you met him? Does he do any videos? He seems pretty cool and knowledgable.
  9. I'm looking for a good website for all information about monitors, their standards and testing. There is a similar website about PSU's and I wondered if any of you know of a site for monitors. I was thinking of someone who has a clear testing procedure and has a big knowledge base of recent monitors. I'm not thinking of any specific monitors, so if the information is a bit outdated, I don't really mind. If it's a youtube channel, that is fine too.
  10. There you go, post updated. It doesn't seem to be the keyboard, because it works fine in the browsers, notepad applications and some of the other games. Oh yeah, and I also tried an old, Dell server keyboard: The same problem in the same programs. ^ that was on an USB controller using a 3rd party chip on the motherboard, as opposed to Intel.
  11. I've encountered an interesting problem: part of the games I own don't start up when prompted, wether they are run from steam or independently. I don't get any errors from most of them, apart from Rogue Legacy, The Binding of Isaac and Planetside 2. They are the following: The Binding of Isaac: After ~5 seconds the game stops responding to any keyboard inputs. Rogue Legacy: When started, the game returns an error that indicates it can't find the keyboard. Planetside 2: The infamous error 99. The End. Hardware: K90 Corsair using drivers from Windows update. Reinstalling the drivers manually did not help. The keyboard works fine. I switch to Mozilla or Notepad++ and the typing works no problem. Windows shortcuts work normally. ....help? please....?
  12. (This is a repost with a different topic, as I don't know how to change the topic name) Q: How do I make this boot Windows from GRUB?? I have a dualboot system with Ubuntu and Windows 7 from two different drives. I would like to boot both from withing GRUB installed on the Ubuntu system, but for some reason Win7 is not found by the OS-PROBE and coding in an additional option (40_win) did not work. My main error is from GRUB itself when I choose the option I coded in using a number of different resources: Quote Info: GNU GRUB version 2.00-19ubuntu2.1 Ubuntu 14.10 that runs on an encrypted HDD (one of my guesses is that I cannot load kernel modules from the HDD) Windows 7 SP1 using GPT (another problem, there is something about GPT and GRUB that apparently makes problems) Quote
  13. I might add that I can google things. Simple solutions like update-grub don't work, and multiple drives work with GRUB flawlesly (sorry for being sarcastic)

  15. huh. I guess I was wrong then. I have about 50 programs for each system (linux, linux server, windows), even more if we add all the repositories that need to be added. I also run a lot of older systems and benchmark/test them in various ways, which I thought is more popular. I will create a list anyway and tag it aproprietly, it still might be usefull.
