Yah I'm really not sure with this one. My mbp is annoying, and USBc has a lot of problems, but this pic that I posted on reddit to make fun of it (there's also a mini dp to full dp adapter between the dp and dldvi adapters not pictured)

Really shows the power of the port, you can do almost anything with usbc, and with thunderbolt 3 my boss has 2 4k screens and all of his peripherals on one plug including power using this dock so when he brings his laptop in, it's as good as the old latching docks.
    https://www.caldigit.com/ts3-plus
TB3 is also way more reliable  than usbc but the adapters are also way more expensive. Either way I'm not sure I could do as much with only 4 of any other ports, only 2 of which I actually need.

I did the dongle mess because it was cheaper (and I already had a lot of the adapters) and I strapped it under my desk for a total of 2 plugs. With the dock, I would have still needed an active DL DVI adapter for one of the legacy 1440p screens I use.
Now, I'm not sure I like the lack of usb ports, but I do like more motherboards having usbc and thunderbolt. I used to carry an itx pc, and this would have been so cool to have this all down to one plug, though im sure I'd still have to plug power in.

Syntaxvgm got a reaction from Spotty in Why are sas drives faster?
Rotate faster? Fast mechanical drives exist for both SAS and sata. Drives that are like 10k rpm are largely useless now, as their purpose was to provide faster access and somewhat faster randoms, at least as fast as you could get with spinning rust. They were loud, ran hot, and cost more for less capacity. They've mostly been replaced with flash storage these days for anything that requires fast access. The drive itself isn't largely different, just the board on the drive.

If you're looking for like raid controllers with more advanced features and better diagnostic data, you're probably looking at a SAS card (not that there isn't good sata solutions out there). A sas controller can support multiple data lanes, and the total throughput I think is 12Gb/s, faster than sata but it's not like you're going to saturate that with one mechanical drive- and it's only with enterprise solutions you're likely to see shit like port multipliers and sas expanders. Oh, and SAS supports sata, but not the other way around. It actually gets really confusing on what can do what when it comes to server mass storage solutions. It's really not something you should concern yourself with unless you are looking for just a few drives.

There's some other unique reasons for SAS (like the long max cable length, 10m if you want a jump rope), but to be honest if you don't know them you're probably not in a position to even consider it, and since it's mostly server/enterprise solutions, it often costs more and is less user friendly/well documented. The drive itself is not defined by the connector really, and while you'll generally see faster and more reliable drives with sas, that's simply because no one is using SAS in the consumer market- pretty much all of the drives are enterprise grade. These days you'll see some high end drives that come in both sas or sata are basically the same drive. In the end it's still just a hard rive, though likely more often enterprise grade. Just choose whatever's more convenient for you, and SAS probably only is if you're working with something that already has it- like raid cards or servers people like to scoop up off ebay for cheap is where I see people have to deal with it that have no experience with it.

You're from the UK, right? If I recall, most houses in the UK operate under a single circuit for basically everything. So it's probably not actually the stuff in your room (At least, not unless something is faulty, like your PSU or the speakers) - but rather, it could be that something elsewhere in the house was drawing a lot of power at the time you turned stuff back on.

dont skimp on the PSU. There's only a few OEMs that make the actualy power delivery parts, make sure to pick based on that or the reviews like johnny guru.

When picking a name (the one you assign in windows), it might be nice to keep it short so when you type it in over the network it's easy to type.
I like picking names about where they are like "SHELF" or "DESK" or I had one that was "FLOOR"
Be creative, make it fun. Here's some others I've chosen or people I know have
Reparations - my pc with all black parts ( a bit long)
    CaptureCrunch- my capture pc
    Privilege - White computer
Vore - my server that consumes drive images whole
    Donglebook- my Macbook pro
    Macbook- my dell precision
    Blacklung- crypto miner
    screamer- miner
    banshee- loud server
    waitress - server
craptop- see this one a lot
kahn- one 'a' seems to miss the mark
wacbook- art student that couldn't afford a mac
    hodor- hodor
    predator- alienware
IevanPolkka- A watercooled computer that had some replacements parts becuase it leeked? Get it? I know.
Platterhouse- a lot of hard drives.
    StableGenius- A computer with issues

If you have a ton of devices go for a theme. I've seen breakfast foods, cities in ancient greece or roman things, mythical creatures like cerberus (three screens), greek gods, different names for the devil, and the cast of seinfeld or TNG to name a few.

I can fit 3 items on a screen at a time on 1080p, same at 1366x768. Why the fuck???? The only way it looks good is on my 43" 4k monitor, where I can fit multiple rows on screen. Did they literally design this for a fucking TV?

The only way this trash heap is even tolerable to browser without feeling boxed in is zooming out, being that it's the one fucking site that doesn't rescale when you zoom to make it cancer no matter the rendering size.

Buy an HBA card off of eBay, or an old RAID controller with IT firmware flashed to it (Used all the time for FreeNAS or other ZFS solutions), which will act like an HBA. Plug 8 or more drives in with that and go ham. Depending on the software, you could go up from that with a SAS expander and up to 25 drives (Plus boot drive). Don't think you can go over 25 drives cause you need individual drive letter assignment per drive.
After that, your 6 hour wipe time doesn't look that bad if you can leave your drives wiping when you're not at work.
