  1. I think the netgear is a solid choice. Which is pretty fortunate considering how much shite advice poeple give about network on this forum. Not one mentioned to check the backplane of the switch you're buying, sure it has 1gbit on all ports but can the switch actually switch the data around? Most of these cheap 20$ gigabit switches has the ports that it promises but that backplane can probably only hold 400-600 mbit, and some in some cases which tp-link is known for even lower. The netgear is alright, but next time you're choosing an new office switch make sure you check the specs with small font :-) - Toby
  2. Hey. I have been looking at a couple of huge 4k monitors such as LG 43UD79-B and Dell p4317Q to replace my 2x dell u2515h, both to improve productivity but also for aesthetics (yup, matters to me). Together with my Ergotech freedom Arm this should make a really decent setup. But since these monitors are relatively new, the information about (other than the manufacturer specs) is hard to find. Is there anyone who have seen these 2 monitors in action or a similar monitor? and can vouch for it. I'd love to also hear your experience with huge monitors like this. I have not tried ultra-widescreen, but i think i'd like a huge 4k screen more tbh. thanks - Toby
  3. You can connect your own router to the dorm network, if they allow it, they might have set some security rules, that prevents you from using your own router in your wall-plug. if they allow it, setting up your own router won't give any increased latency on your desktop pc (ethernet) but you should probably change the wifi channels to something else than default. which should give you close to no interference on the wifi part, since most poeple without IT knowledge just use standard channels that their router is set up with. Any AC wifi router by some known brand should be fine.. (asus, linksys, synlogy etc) Today, consumer grade routers are basically built on the same firmware, but with their own gui on, but does not change the fact, that most 50$ Routers are capable of handling a home with atleast 15 - 20 devices on. configured properly. Buying a router full of features (cisco, juniper, pfsense) won't make much sense, unless you know what these features are for and how you can manage them. ALSO, all routers and firewall can nat.. it's basically how you from the inside to the outside, without NAT. You won't be able to get internet, let alone connect to a proxy. Not sure why you would mention proxy, it has nothing to do with the translation of public ip to your private Also you must expect OP to have some insane demands for skype and generally video conferencing if you wanna tweak with QoS, it's your ISP who should configure QoS so that you won't notice any jitter.

  7. Hello! I'm currently looking for a few parts for a mini itx / hptc build im doing, this build will mainly be used for lan parties (Yeah, some of us old folks still attend those) and for couch gaming at home. I have a beast of a main rig, but taking my rig apart every single time, is a huge pain. So I'm looking for something small, with decent amount of power. We usually play games such as: League of Legends, CS:GO, WoW, Dota, Diablo 3 and im pretty sure we're gonna play alot of overwatch aswell. What I already have laying around Asus GTX 770 600W Bronze PSU (ATX) 8gb ddr3 Ram (low profile) So basically what I will be needing is: Chassis Motherboard CPU (CPU cooler?) SFX PSU? I have no problem with AMD, since i would probably be cheaper to build such a system. I'm looking to spend a maximum of 400 dollars, for the last parts which parts would you suggest? Thanks in advance
  8. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/w7L6Jx im not really getting anything usefull information here sorry. is this build better than the first one i made? Cause the only broad agreement i see, is that my first attempt was rather shit
  9. Hello fellow tech geeks. How do you guys feel about this build? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/GZd37P I already have 16gb of ram laying at home would this build be sufficient for games such as League of legends, CS:GO, World of Warcraft, Starcraft etc. I know the GPU will pass the test, but i have no idea how AMD works, i only know they are way cheaper. So if you have better suggestion please let me know or else i will buy this tonight as a christmas present for my smaller brother. ------ Toby
  10. Hello. My girlfriend and I recently moved into a bigger apartment, which mean I had to compress my whole old apartment, which was more or less a big nerd cave, into my new "office". As many of you probably know, creatures such as females, prefer a "visitor-friendly" house, so we made a agreement (she agreed, i just nodded) about a zero tolerance rule about cables, hardware and other tech stuff laying around. This forced me buy a small media center PC for the television, which works great for online streaming and such. Sadly, this is very inefficient for watching movies netflix currently dosen't support *wink* *wink* since it only has 128gb SSD. But because i love tech projects, it's enough to convince me getting a streaming server. So im building a small streaming server which will also work as a small file storage, which will contain programming projects, family pictures etc. I know how to do the setup, but i know close to nothing about server hardware, which is why i seek a little help from you guys :-) Here is my requirements: Able to stream 1080p video, while also being able to act as small file stor small 128gb ssd simultaneously. low power cost somewhat silent gigabit ethernet. Thanks in advance. Sorry for any major typos, this is written on my OPO at lunch. - Toby
  11. What does IPS mean? is it better than "not" IPS?
  12. Hello fellow geeks. http://www.dell.com/ed/business/p/dell-u2713hm/pd Dell UltraSharp U2713HM Is there anyone, who can confirm, that this monitor is worthy of being a part of my man crave? A little information of what its daliy tasks are going to be, will be described under here: Programming. Casual gaming, mainly World of Warcraft and League of Legends. Graphical work, also one the reasons i picked this monitor for the amazing colors. Do anyone have any experience with this monitor? Or even better suggestions? Best Regards Toby >> BFT
