  1. No worries - I've got a small update - new BIOS revision is out; they've told me to try that. I shall get it installed and let you know
  2. Not had anything back from their support, but I guess it is "aim to be within 48 hours". Have just tweeted to JJ - not sure how likely that there will be a response of substance (is only Twitter), but still...
  3. Hey, trying this here as well as the ROG Forum... Hi, I've just upgraded from a 7+ year old machine, so I may be a little rusty when it comes to trying to problem solve the following... When I'm in game (Alien Isolation, occasionally GTA V, so far not X-COM), I'm seeing the occasional system freeze. I have to do a hard reset to clear the error, windows boots OK and it's like nothing has went wrong. Checking the event log, I'm seeing the following error, which I think is related (it is the last error I can find before the "system lost power" one, from the restart): Driver ACPI returned invalid ID for a child device (5). After a bit of googleing, I'm still not 100% sure what this is. System specs; Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VIII Hero, CPU: Intel 6700K (no overclocks), RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengence LPX 2133 (4x 8GB), Storage: 512GB 850 Pro SSD as Boot, 2x 4TB WD RED Pro in RAID 1 via the onboard Intel controller GPU: ASUS Strix 980Ti (no overclocks) PSU: EVGA Supernova 1000P2 OS: Windows 7 Ultimate Motherboard BIOS is up to date, windows is up to date, all drivers are up to date... Any ideas...?
  4. Z170, possibly SLI in the future (not quite at the moment), I know that aesthetics shouldn't be number 1 priority, but I kinda want to stay away from a white one (or look at a different 980Ti which would colour match). I'm coming from an old rig, so anything is an upgrade, but it also means that I have some possibly old info stuck in my head. For example - I know ASUS has redesigned their ethernet ports. Also, I know that one manufacture is using Killer, and that used to not always be a good thing. Additionally, I have experiance with old Creative sound cards - the drivers suck! I presume that they have improved for onboard... but I haven't the experience. Kind of wondering about the ASUS Maximus VII Hero, but I'm not 100% sure.
  5. Hey, just wondering how you chose that MSI motherboard...? I'm looking at a few different ones, but having a bit of a hard time choosing which to go for...
  6. You think the additional cost for 2x GTX980s over the GTX980ti is worth it for the boost in performance...? I've kind of got worries about the 4GB VRAM on the 980s vs. the 6GB on the 980ti... I do play Skyrim lol
  7. Cheers I'll have a proper look over that. This is the current status with my rigs and usage (if it changes anything). I've got the parts together to build a dedicated CAD rig for Solidworks (somewhere between a hobby and a profession) - I'd been drawing them up on the gaming rig before it broke down; so it isn't built as of yet... CPU: Intel i7-4790K, CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster Nepton 240M, Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VII Impact, RAM: Kingston Savage (2x 8GB), Storage: 1x 512GB Samsung 850 Pro & 2x 4TB Western Digital Red Pro, Graphics: PNY Quadro K4200, PSU: BitFenix Fury 550G (hopefully big enough), Case: Corsair 250D, OS: Windows 7. Solidworks requires a Quadro / FirePro to get the full functionality for rendering etc. The gaming rig is to do everything else... I don't currently stream or anything, but that is the way things seem to be going & with a more capable gaming rig, I may end up doing that & needing this rig to be able to handle that kind of video rendering (or, I guess, I may be able to hand it off to the CAD rig). The dream was 3x 1440p screens in surround, but that may have to reduce to a single 1440p for the moment. My Steam library is massive, so I'm going to need larger than 1TB drives - I was wondering about duplicating the drive setup for the CAD rig... Not sure if that changes anything with the previous suggestion...?
  8. Hi, looking for some suggestions and parts... My current gaming rig has been showing it's age for years now, but due to some OS / Hard Drive issues (motherboard age, new HDD sizes, etc), the 7 / 8 year old rig needs replacing. But I'm not sure what to replace it with... As I see it, there are 3 options: Z97, X99, Z170. The build will be a gaming rig as primary, but may end up rendering or such like. I want it to last as long as possible, so I'm wondering about X99 / Z170 as I see them having a better chance of lasting longer than Z97. The current system started off with no OC, then as it started to show its age, it got a healthy OC to keep it going. With Z170, I figure that same process may be viable. With X99, the possibility of going from the 5820k up to the 5930k would be a good future update (or 5930k to 5960k). But I'm open to suggestions... The whole thing is unplanned due to the issues rendering the rig unuseable - so I've not done much research into components... (I shall continue to do so, but I'd appreciate the advice ) I'm in the UK, Case / SSD / HDDs / Monitor / Keyboard / mouse, etc (and the budget) have not been set as of yet... I will be looking to have an SSD / M.2 as the OS drive, plus 2x HDDs in RAID 1.
  9. Nice find. I start to get a little worried when they only show the US format in pictures - since I didn't think about it when I bought this CODE keyboard... then I opened the box...
  10. Hi, the title pretty much sums it up: UK layout (105 Key) mechanical keyboard with backlit Cherry MX greens... is it a unicorn, or am I not looking hard enough...? I have the CODE keyboard (104 key layout / US spec) with backlit Cherry MX Green switches - I need another keyboard for a second PC, but don't want to be left on a US layout / don't want to loose the backlighting. Any ideas...? Have e-mailed WASD to ask if they'll get round to adding a backlight to the WASD V2 range, or 105 key layout to the CODE range - will see what they respond with. I cannot be the only one that wants this combo... (actually, I'm not - I know @skullbringer is also interested in this type of combo)
  11. Bit weird; Linustechtips page on Vessel had the fanless mode for 900 series video on the 'featured' page, but not shown in the 'videos' page... been up for 14 hours.
  12. Apologies, laggy connection = double posty
  13. Weird, had to navigate here instead of the link in the forum message... Anyway... Username: xXDeltaXx https://www.vessel.com/videos/LCoY5zfFf https://www.vessel.com/videos/JYZEYDYx0
  14. Good move... hope it brings the success we all want (but kinda hope not too much at first - hope you don't loose your rig)
  15. ... and finally, something that looks accurate emerges...
  16. If they are that easy to buy, if we all chipped in a couple of bucks, think we could make them come up with some good laws?
  17. Hi, Actually, scratch what I had typed just a moment ago... With the exception of the PFSense firewall LAN port & the router, everything is 10/100/1000. The router is 10/100 and uses a CAT5 cable to connect to the working network card on the PFSense router (gigabit card). Theother gigabit card died, so I'm using the motherboard's 10/100 port and a CAT5e cable to connect to the switch. The comment above would explain the gigabit card reading 10/100 only. Thanks for making me check how things are connected All of the computers and the NAS connect to the switch via CAT5e (or better) cables, then the switch connects to the Firewall and on to the Router. I can see the network usage increase when communicating with the NAS, so it is definitely going faster than just the 10/100, but no where near saturating the gigabit connection (via the Network Utilization section of Task Manager). Some of the cables are home made (CAT7 cable with shieded CAT6 connectors. They have been checked for continuity and that the cables are in the correct order, but is there a good way to check for speed / reliability?
  18. Hi, looking for some network advice... (sorry for the wall) I'm finding a couple of issues with my current network setup - I think some if them are just me lacking in knowledge / improper setup, but some of them are hardware related... so, I'm looking for a bit of advice on updating and probably some advice on the configuration. Current setup; Router - PFSense firewall - 16 port unmanaged switch - wired connection to all the computers / laptops / Synology NAS. Full duplex on all connections. Router: ISP provided (replaced last week), 4x 10/100 ports, 10500 down, 1400 up. PFSense Firewall: Old computer, single core Celeron @ 2.93GHz, not sure on the RAM size (512 max), old IDE HDD (150GB ish), WAN connection is the motherboards' 10/100 port, LAN port is a gigabit card (only seems to be registering as 10/100...) Switch: Netgear 16 port unmanaged gigabit switch NAS: Synology DS213+ with 2x 3TB WD Red drives. I cannot really do anything with my router, so I'm looking to improve the firewall and NAS (maybe combining into one unit?).The NAS is ok, but it is slow to upload / download from it and I've tried watching videos from it over the network and the stuttering is terrible. I do wonder if it is the way I'm watching it (just using it as a network drive) / possibly that the Red drives are only 5400RPM... The firewall did have 2x gigabit network cards in, but one died - so I had to switch to the motherboard's ethernet port. But the fact it is reading 10/100 on both is a bit weird. I the dashboard isn't showing high usage on anything, but I am seeing a reduction in speed (speedtest.net) when connected via the firewall (9000 down, 1200 up) - I don't know if this can be improved with a better firewall / changing the config, or if this is just a result of using one. Dumb question time: So, what would be needed (if at all possible) to have the setup work as follows: Best connection to the Router (it has 2, maybe 3 free 10/100 ports) - can I link multiple for better throughput? Best configuration for the network: I want the upload / download of a few PCs to be as fast as possible, and the rest of the network not affect them / affect them as little as possible. I want all of them to have good communication to the NAS (the Synology has a single ethernet port). I want to keep a firewalled connection away from the rest of the network (I'd like the connection to be as fast as possible, but not affect the select PCs mentioned above). Would that have to be a special build combo file server, PFSense box, with a few network ports (and probably a lot of research / some help) - maybe with the Synology used to create / store backups...Or is that whole thing dumb / far too complex for my little mind
  19. Yeah, he doesn't know how he got it - thinks maybe something from Alibaba.com... not sure if he fully understands how it will have been triggered. Thanks for the help / confirming what I thought the situation is.
  20. I guess this is the best place to ask...(?) Or, can someone be kind and move it to the best place I've got a work mate's laptop which has been infected with CTB Locker... any suggestions? I had a read around before turning it on, and have killed any exe I could find from safemode with command prompt, then have installed a few anti malware / anti spyware programs & it seems that the infection is now gone. However, obviously, there's still a load of encrypted files. I know that the OS is probably shot and will need a reinstall (Windows 8...), but I had hoped to try and get anything back that I could before wiping. Some files are not encrypted, so I'd hope that they are OK. I had heard (wrongly, it appears) that the encryption needed to create a duplicate which was encrypted, and then delete the old one - so a recovery program (Recuva for example) may be able to get said files back. Either Recuva isn't good enough, or that is not true in this case. In short, can anything be salvaged? Can anything that has been encrypted be recovered? The files are ".bqfzddk" if that contributes anything useful... Yes, I am going to wipe and start a fresh. Thanks
  21. Interesting idea... wish I'd thought of that. Got one on it's way now. The plan is to replicate the motherboard I am going to be using for my new CAD rig... Model the majority of the complex parts before it gets built; as I'll never get the chance again (because I'll be using them). Then I'll be able to disassemble this old gaming rig and give it the clean and few tweaks that it needs
  22. So, I've been looking around on the interwebs for a through hole DDR3 socket (full size, not SO-DIMM) drawing or two to make a CAD model from... not having much success. So, I thought that I'd ask here - on the off chance that someone has found something on their random travels around the internet. I have found some (Molex's website for example), but the problem I am having is that they don't show detail... (I've attached a PDF from a TE version) If available, I'm looking for detail on the pins, the body cavity (where the pins go, how they route through etc.). I guess it may be super secretive Intellectual Property of the companies... but they are just DDR3 sockets - a common standard type of thing, so I'd have though that they exist; and you can get them for PCIe slots, hence hoping that they exist for the DDR3 sockets. I have seen some 3D CAD models out there, but the ones I've looked at are all just basic to the same type of drawings I've found. I've got two to measure from, but they are attached to a new Impact VII which I don't want to damage, so it's guesswork for the PCB side at the moment... Cheers So far: ENG_CD_2013266_F.pdf ENG_CD_2013266_F.pdf
  23. Cheers man, the last full build I did was many many years ago, this one got an update a few years back when the motherboard got too broken, but I replaced it like for like - it's a socket 775 rig with a GTX470... so, yeah, not had much contact with new hardware for many years. I was deliberating about the Xeon vs the I7... The I7 is supported on the Impact VII and the Xeon isn't. JJ had said that it would physically work, but the board doesn't support ECC RAM, and that is the main reason people go with a Xeon - hence sticking with the I7. The SSD and the M.2 SSD were basically picked due to 5 star feedback... I don't know if the M.2 will stay; depends if the Quadro gets issues from only running on an x8 connection (will have to test). If it all works out, then great, I get better storage options. If not, then I'll just have the SSD. So, yes, I probably need a bigger SSD. I am wondering about a bigger M.2 SSD as well, on the hope that the Nvidia rep was correct...
  24. Well, it's finally the time to put the cash up for buying a new CAD rig... but, I'm after a little check over the parts selected & maybe a few ideas on some little bits. (sorry for the obligatory wall of text I tend to do) The main usage is going to be 3D CAD software - primarily SolidWorks, but I'm able to get Inventor from work, so I'll probably have that on it as well. Games are probably going to be kept away for the most part, but I need to fix this gaming rig, so there will be some on it for a little while. Space is limited, so I already bought a 250D case with the aim of installing the new ASUS Impact VII and a 4790K. The graphics will be handled by a Quadro K4200 (refreshed K4000) - after speaking with an Nvidia rep, running it at PCIe x8 should be OK - hence the M.2 in the parts list... Current plan is: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/xXDeltaXx/saved/c8xTwP Main queries: CPU cooler - CM Glacer 240L SHOULD fit in the 250D according to some sites, but after checking on the CM Nepton 240M, I cannot see the Glacer on CM's website... So, Glacer / Nepton / something else? RAM - not a clue on RAM TBH; 2x 8GB sticks is all that I know I'm after... Storage - 2x HDDs in RAID 1 for bulk / long term storage, 1x SSD for programs / files I need fast etc, 1x M.2 for the OS and a few programs... or if performance really sucks at PCIe x8, the SSD will have the OS, and the M.2 will have to go. Not sure on the SSD or the M.2 drive. PSU - probably overkill, may look for a Corsair RM450...? Peripherals: Keyboard - not sure, I want to go to a mechanical one, and from the way I smash the keys on this thing, I'm wondering about Green switches (I've got a little sampler thing and they seem OK). Greens limit the market, so maybe the CM Storm... Mouse - I'm using a RAT7 at the moment & I've got used to it / like it... but the main switches suck & develop a double click over time, so I don't know if I'm willing to give them another try. But, nothing I've seen so far grabs my attention... Headset - I was thinking the Func HS-260, but then Linus reviewed the HyperX Cloud & I kind of like it. Monitors - I am after 2x 27" 1440p IPS panels, preferably matte... the ASUS ones are good, but expensive. I know Logan uses some cheap Korean ones, but not sure of whether they are the best way to go... Thanks for reading. If you made it through the lot, have a cookie
