  1. After resetting the power supply the computer turned on. It turned out to be a corrupted BIOS, but after a BIOS reset everything is back to expected. I took a few steps in attempt to avoid the problem again in the future so we'll see, however it is not a power supply issue like I originally thought. I'll keep an eye on it and be ready to put more effort and money into it in the future.
  2. First, irrelevant and unhelpful. Second, like I said before, I already had the RAM it was not a purchase that was made for this computer. Third, Linus himself has stated that the different speeds of RAM provide marginal improvement, and this computer will not be used for anything that benefits from faster ram.
  3. with the RAM, it was free. Extra ram that I already had and had no use for. I would have given him all 32gb I had but since he only benefits from dual channel not quad channel we decided 16 was more than enough already. Cabling will be double checked and the switch on the PSU will be checked, though the symptoms don't match that. if the switch was.. switched.. then the computer would have just turned off and not gone to sleep first.
  4. I was thinking that was a possibility. Problem is I don't have an extra one laying around and I KNOW I don't trust the PSUs in some of the old computers laying around and Microcenter will be closed by the time I get off work. Like I asked before.. If the PSU was the issue, and I swap out that for a different better one from a more known and trusted company, is there a chance that the other components were murdered ruthlessly by the original PSU? It wasn't an expensive computer but I would hate to have to replace every single part, and I won't be able to take it apart, box everything back up and return it in exchange for the exact same parts in a timely manner as after tonight I have a very busy work schedule til mid next week.
  5. after putting it together, everything worked as expected and fine, windows installation went smooth all parts working great right out of the box. I put a few basic programs and antivirus etc on there for him. All harddrives, the diskdrive, the SSD RAID setup, ram, cpu, gpu.. no issues or errors detected. I let him enjoy his new toy and ask questions before I left. A few hours later he texts me saying that it went into sleep mode while he was doing other things and won't wakeup, but the keyboard and mouse lights were still on, though moving them or pushing buttons had no effect. then about twenty minutes after that, he said that both the keyboard and mouse lights were off, the computer was off, and won't turn back on. aside from making sure it's plugged in.. Where is a good place to start with looking for issues? all parts are brand new aside from Mobo which was open boxed but still in new condition. The power supply did have a bit of coil whine (which was odd for brand new) and if that ends up being the issue what is the chance that the entire build has been destroyed due to a bad power supply? I'm going to leave for work in a little bit and then go over to help him work on it afterward, I'll be bringing my laptop so that I can refer back here. Budget build, simple but upgradeable: AMD 4130 + CM Hyper 212 evo (bios showed temp is < 30*c on idle) GA 970A UD3P Nvidia 750ti 16gb (2x8gb) Corsair XMS3 1333 2x Kingston V300 120Gb SSD in RAID 0 SolidGear 650w ATX PSU 250gb generic HDD (Salvaged from an old computer) Diablotek mid-tower with included fans. (Great case for the price, used it before, fans are decent quality)
  6. the 6gb 780s are not completely useless. They take a great card and remove a potential bottleneck of 3gb vram. In situations where you don't use 3 or more, then it won't make a difference, but in the times where you do find yourself needing 4 or 5, then the 6gb buffer will be of benefit. Other things than gaming use the video card, so in a gaming situation that might not be as important, but its not useless. Sure the card might crap out in a gaming environment before it reaches 6gb, but its better for the card to run out of ability than for it to run out of vram and still have more power to give. That said, I highly considered getting some 780 6gbs as I'd use them for more than just gaming and the 6gb buffer would be useful to me outside of gaming, however as I'm not finishing my build yet, I'm waiting for the 880. Also, I wouldn't get just one 780 6gb. if you are going to get the 6gb then SLI is the way to go. However, if doing single card, 780ti is a better overall choice.
  7. I'm really hoping that have an x99 series board (maybe called the x98 or something) that has DDR3 and socket 2011 so that I can upgrade to a lot of the new stuff with a 4930K without having to upgrade anything other than the mobo.
  8. I feel like this is a direct quote from a Blink 182 song.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlFuuI2XQmQ
  9. First Great War. Initial Orcs vs Humans happening. I'm really hoping that they give Medivh a good amount of screentime, he's my favorite lore 'hero,' though i guess technically anti-hero in an out-of-his-control possessed-by-demon type way, pretty much literally.. Anyway. He needs to be in it as he is a very humble behind the scenes major part of the story with quite the biography of his own.
  10. ^^ kinda.. in gaming: 780ti=Titan BLACK>780=Titan. I understand its just semantics and specificalities, but there is a difference between the Titan and the Titan black, exactly like there is a difference between the 780 and the 780 ti. The Titan is a 780 with 6gb of VRAM and extra computing capabilities. The Titan Black is a 780 ti with 6gb of VRAM and extra computing capabilities. The 780 6gb is a Titan without the extra computing capabilies. There is sadly no 780ti 6gb without the extra computing capabilities. (so far.. the only one that was announced has been cancelled)
  11. at 1080, a single 780ti will do everything you need it to, and a single 780 3gb will also perform up to par, you won't see any benefit of the extra 3gb on a single card solution at 1080. however, if you planned on SLI later, and/or running higher resolutions, the 780 6gb would be something to consider if a titan black or sli 780ti are out of your budget. (SLi 6gb 780s will perform very very well for a cost about the same as a single Titan Black, which for gamers is essentially a 6gb 780 ti.)
  12. Wholly Geezballz guys stop arguing in extremes! [haswell-extremes? ]. Some gamers have use for lots of cores. Some don't need more than their old smartphone. being a "gamer" doesn't automatically mean you don't need more power in your computer, and it doesn't automatically mean you do. Some "gamers" stream and video edit and audio edit and render and other things with their computer, they'd LOVE an 8core processor. "Oh wait they are a gamer, they don't need 8 cores.. psh.." Some "gamers" don't stream, don't edit video, don't render, or do anything other than games, they clearly don't need an 8core processor. "Oh wait, they are a gamer, games will soon use all the cores! they need it!" I'm not going to call you guys idiots, but.. being a gamer has nothing to do with your computing power needs. it has to do with the quality of gaming you prefer, and other uses for the computer. Besides, this is x99, a workstation and enthusiast oriented platform. Is it badass for gaming? YES! but are PC gamers (likely more specifically males between the ages of 15-25ish) the target demographic for this chipset? NO.
  13. EVGA also has a 6gb version. I'm personally going this route, SLI EVGA 6gb 780s for my multiscreen needs, though mine are 1440p+ not triple 1080.
  14. I let my game time end a while ago while I'm on my laptop (can't play WoW on it, sadly) but I'll likely resub for a while after I finish my new computer. My old computer I had a 650ti boost (lower end older video card, i think I got it for $140 ish at microcenter) it had 2gb, and It ran WoW very well at 1440p. Like, max everything except AF/AA/mipmap (can't recall which ones were available in that game) and shadows on high instead of ultra.. rarely ever below 55 fps when it wasn't at 60+. if a single 2gb 650 ti boost can run WoW smoothly with high FPS at 1440p, then you should be fine with anything equal or better.
  15. While Lays isn't wrong, I personally find it safe to say that the tiny amount of extra money spent to get the 6gb varient over the 3gb varient, especially in an SLI setup (which is what I'm going to do) is simply to remove one possible bottleneck that occurs more often lately than it did when the 780s were first released. With the 4gb 290 in a decent demand largely because of its bigger frame buffer, a 6gb 780 is a good alternative if you like Nvidia's features. If the card runs out of power then the card runs out of power, but I feel like it'd be far better for a card to run out of power and give all its got before it runs out of memory than to run out of memory before it runs out of power and still have more performance it could have offered otherwise.
  16. They did do tests on the r33 to see what needed to be changed to meet the US safety standards (which is why they aren't street legal) but the information of what needed to be changed was never made available to the public. So technically the r33 CAN be legal, but you have to do a lot of work on it and all the information on how to do so is kept private. Kinda lame. I do like the r34, but the r33 is also quite sexy. r32s are still nice, but meh. I'd rather have the r33 or r34.
  17. Prefer the Skyline. The GT-R is basically the R35.. but the R34 and older are far superior in overall awesomeness, aside from not being legal in the US.
  18. I think a lot of people will at least want to upgrade their PC, if not get a new one. Sometimes you are only happy til you realize what you are missing. Once you experience smooth high frame rates with high details, you don't ever wanna go back to anything not quite as smooth or detailed.
  19. I'd really like to see how SLI titan blacks and a 4930K run Microsoft Paint. Its a program I like to use often and I want to make sure it will run well when I finish my new 4930K PC with similar specs.. other wise I might have to upgrade before I even finish building the damned thing! On a serious note, heavily heavily heavily graphically modded skyrim?
  20. the 6gb 780s are option as well. They are just cheaper titans that don't have the extra computing stuff that most people don't ever use.
  21. so if "the 780 (ti, or titans) doesn't have large enough memory bandwidth (384-bit) to effectively make use of 6gb of VRAM," and the 880 is supposed to have a smaller memory bus (256-bit) how can it effectively make use of the larger amounts of VRAM it is supposed to have? I don't think I'm waiting for the 800 series unless its revealed to be leaps and bounds better, this is just hypothetical. Edit: I apologize if I used the wrong terminology.. correct it if necessary.
  22. I wish! If I was than 2 Titan Blacks would be my go to since the 6gb 780ti was cancelled. (or that other guy who got two TitanZs for his 1080p monitor cuz he was unhappy with his 3-way SLI 780 tis..) I am using the "workstation" (excuse) so that I can go as all out (want the PC to last all the way through 5-6 years of school) as I can without starving myself in the mean time and not feel bad about it, or get crap from the lady on the matter, but I do have school starting soon, and though I have good steady income, I would like my computer built before the semester starts, and two Titan Blacks isn't quite gonna work out in that short of a time. the 780 6gb is basically the regular titan without the floating point precision stuff. Anyway.. You recommend the ACX cooler even though I'll be watercooling the whole system soon? I figured after removing the non-reference cooler, all reference PCB cards are equal aside from initial cost. This might not be a budget build, but I'd like to be able to justify the majority of the purchases with more than just wow factor.
  23. the 6gb is only like $50 more than the 3gb. At this point, there is no reason not to get the 6gb if you are getting a 780, especially if going SLI. If I was going to go AMD I'd get a R9 295x2 with a waterblock, but at $1500 I might as well get three 780s. Obviously I'm not going for budget build using a 4930K, the most expensive x79 mobo, two 500gb SSDs, and a custom watercooling loop in a 900D..
