Let it run for another 10-15 so a new high for the bottom card and new low for the top card. The bottom alway ran about 5c hotter on the back plate but about 3-5c lower on the gpu. So take that for what it's worth. 

Gonna be a forever waiting game. Get something now and regret it when something new and shiny comes out. Or wait for the next thing, then ask this again and everyone will say to wait for the next shiny thing.
 
Its like the same people who say to sli down the road and when that time comes they just say to get the new card and sli down the road.

The i series have the option to plug into the pump. Then using the USB dongle for the link software. But without any info from the op all we can do is assume. 

Mine have always ran on every asus board I've ever had. Even with the software off. Is the fan not plugged into the CPU header?

Well my 1080 barely gets out of the 30's. Highest ive recorded with the titans are in the low 50's. That's with the cover off the case so best case scenario.

Gonna buff it down to about 400 grit but I don't have any white and black rouge to polish it real nice but It should be as good as a cpu heat spreader.

I have sand paper up to 2000 but I prefer to use some abrasive buffs on a dremel. Worked quite well when I ported the heads on one of my cars. Gonna see how it looks under the paint of this backplate and go from there I guess.

All of my tools were way to aggressive for this delicate operation. Had to grind down the mounts and ended up breakin on. May go to micro center and get a thermospere kit and use the hardware from that. 

So what fps would you consider the lowest you would like? Keeping games capped at 144 frames would be somewhat difficult past this gen of games.
I still use a single card from the gtx 7xx series and it can play bf1 on the ultra preset and still maintain 60+ fps at 1080p.
 
A 1080 will get you far if you would like to do the same, even the 1070.
 
How about get him the 1060 and then he could just work for any upgrades in the future.

Just get another 780 and use the 1080 as a paper weight.

Just a res? Not a pump combo? Sure get anything used or not. Swiftech has a little one for like $20. Anything will work, including not using one.

You would need a matching pump. It's made for a d5, from what it says. 

I'd buy one used. I bought a cheap thermaltake pump res combo and it ran at a constant speed which way very annoying and loud. So if you get one make sure it's good quality.

Yea that's what I realized having a pair of 660ti's. Playing cod ghost destroyed those cards in surround. Buying a titan was the biggest improvement in gaming I have ever felt, aside from going from a ball mouse to optical.

Did you clear cmos?

I prefer the bigger case, more airflow. Which I prefer with the rigs I run, either on air or water. 
 
If you have a single card then the small one will do.
