I do not follow Australian politics, but under what guise has this been passed? What bogey man is being used to justify this? As far as I know, and admittedly its not much when it comes to Australia's government, they do not have bad crime, and guns are not everywhere. So how did this pass?

I agree with this forum's mod team that downvotes add nothing but toxicity. They're not as bad if they're only visible to you and used as suggestions for the algorithm I guess. Different reactions than just "like" or "dislike" would probably be a better addition.

It's only on replies and considering how twitter is I give it a 70/30 chance of going well (70% chance it goes wrong).

Castdeath97 reacted to Sauron in Amazon's mmo New World is bricking 3090 gpus
Unless this game is doing something extremely weird I blame this on the card manufacturers. It shouldn't be possible for a card to spontaneously combust, no matter how much you tax it via DX calls.
Possibly because 3090s are extremely high TDP chips and manufacturers may have cut corners with the cooling (or have overclocked the cards too far out of the box). Might also be that the users are not being entirely forthcoming about overclocking their cards.
As for it not happening during alpha, the wider outreach of the proper launch could explain the difference.

according to jay those other scenarios don't actually draw over the power limit, new world launcher/menu does, and it seems like the ftw3 has very uneven power delivery between the pci-e slot and the 3rd 8-pin power connector too, it's suspected that the pop is from the choke/vrm associated with the 3rd plug, of course this doesn't mean other brands/models are immune.
Can't wait til Jay and Steve put out a video on these.

"Similar" is not "the same"
For all we know what is affecting EVGA's cards that "went pop" is not the same as the ones causing the black screen, and not the same as what is happening with the AMD cards.
People will be way too quick to go "oh that's happened to me too" when it's not the same thing. Chances are almost certainly it's only happening to people who have VSYNC off to begin with (which is a typical thing MMO game players do to lower input latency), since that will guarantee the GPU runs at 100% all the time.
Typical scenarios of "my computer stops working with this game, only this game, it's poorly optimized, etc", is basically isolated to OC cards, and manufacturers who cheap out on parts and cheat benchmarks like MSI.

This. There's zero benefit to letting FPS run unlimited...if anything it's a detriment maxing out your CPU processing frames that don't matter, taking away resources for other tasks. I set mine to 143 FPS so gsync is always active as well.

If you do, just set an FPS limit in your Nvidia Control Panel to prevent the suspected issue of FPS over drive causing massive power draw and spikes.

EVGA is the board partner with the most 3090s produced so they will seem the hardest hit

The most surprising thing I find in all of this is how many people actually have RTX 3090s.
I really hope we get a proper explanation for why the cards are dying. Even just photos of the boards to see if there are any damaged SMD components would be very interesting to see, but I'm guessing most people aren't wanting to take apart their dead $2000+ GPU and risk getting rejected on warranty.
A few people have suggested it might be VRAM overheating but I would expect it to throttle and safely shut down if that was the case. Some people described it happening as soon as they load the game and get to the menu as well, which makes me think it might be something to do with the power delivery that is killing the cards. Sudden power spike blowing open a resistor or MOSFET. Those EVGA FTW3s will pull a huge amount of power in certain tasks. Techpowerup review tested it at over 500w sustained power draw during furmark. From people's comments they've described the menu/lobby causing their GPU to max out. If the lobby is uncapped and has some weird rendering issue then it could be causing massive load on the GPU and large power spikes, and for whatever reason maybe poor design, below average parts, or the higher limits the premium ftw3 card is set to run at - possibly combination of all three - is causing the FTW3 to fail.
That's my guess at this stage. Pretty interested to see what the actual cause is.
Either way it's not good news for EVGA, or for anyone who owns these cards. If this is a widespread issue on FTW3 cards then the RMA process is going to be interesting.

NVIDIA approves EVERY design by AiB. That was the last debate when cards were crashing because of GPU backside capacitors...
