  2. I will be multitasking a lot. converting/compressing videos. playing MMO's, emulating consoles, and most importantly, leaving this computer on almost 24/7 downloading things. awesome thank you brother. I knew 460w would be enough, my other pc with an i5 and 7970 draws only 320W overclocked. This new pc is more power efficient so it should never go over 320W. the z97 motherboard is for other features, not overclocking. 4790S is power efficient i7. As opposed to a 4790 or a 4790K. Basically, no overclocking for me, it's a productivity and multitasking machine. Does anyone know if I can upgrade this to 32GB ram in the future? I presume I just buy another 2 of the exact same ram sticks and install them? Thanks for the help everyone.
  3. Right, however, z97 generally has more features like m.2 or sata express though. which is why I skipped looking at H97 or other motherboards. Plus this motherboard has a good audio chip. Should I look into H97 motherboards? theres just so much variety I needed a starting point to narrow down a motherboard.
  4. Hi guys, lets see if you guys can spot any incompatibilities in this build. I've have some experience but just want to check with some friends before I confirm the order. Case: Fractal Define R5 Titanium ($154) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI ($195) CPU: i7 4790S ($436) RAM: G.Skill 2400 16gb Ripjaws X ($192) GPU: Strix gtx 970 ($519) PSU: Seasonic Platinum fanless 460W ($219) CPU cooler: Noctua U14S ($102) Case Fan: Noctua NF-A14 ($32) SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB ($168) HDD: Seagate Barracuda 3TB ($132) Card Reader: Astrotek AT-V-113 ($11) Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate ($219) Total: $2,379 I'm aiming for a little bit of expanding room, hence a fully featured z97 mobo. uhh, its more productivity and *going to be leaving this on overnight downloading things* kind of machine, so I really wanted power efficiency, hence strix gpu and platinum power supply. I do not plan on SLI 970's so that psu seems like enough, maybe a tv tuner pci card in the future and some more hdds. Thank you for reading. I appreciate any feedback
  5. Hey, sorry I'm replying so late. I am currently still using my Xonar DSX It does it's job great. I plug 5.1 speakers in and when I want to use headphones I just have to swap one cable. It's not ideal having to swap cables. I would like if I could have them both plugged in and then do it via software when I wanted to but nonetheless. Then I have to open the software from the quick icons on the right of the monitor and change the output from "headphones" to "5.1 speakers" However, the software is great and has a fun equalizer and volume controls, dolby, high fidelity.
  6. My favorite thing about it is the color. That gun metal looks great, Almost as good as my favorite color; black chrome.
  7. Only toys and games? I'd put more simple fun stuff on the channel. With Slick's segment, I don't want to just watch slick's face talking, have him in a small box in the corner on top of the gameplay. The Ball Pit? I think it would make everyone happy if you just went with the standard Linus<insert word here>tips
  8. I noticed it said 'tap e to lift' (the window). Someone should make a game where instead of tapping one button, you have to make the motion of opening the window on your keyboard. Or when you hit someone, you have to spam buttons, because I noticed that on a controller, you have to actually put energy into doing it. Usually when i need to tap a button on the ps3 controller really fast and repeatedly, I will take my right hand off the controller and spam the button with my index finger.
  9. didn't know "optical to 5.1 decoder " existed till now. It doesn't seem worth it when I can just get a sound card for the same price which will also give me better cpu performance. double win. I have an mATX mobo; Asus B85M-e. My graphics card covers 3 slots so I have 1 PCIe left right at the bottom.
  10. So I have 5.1 speakers, (centre, sides, rear, subwoofer) but my motherboard doesn't have 5.1 surround sound output on the back IO. So I'm considering a soundcard that has 5.1 or 7.1. Is there a soundcard that has both surround support (3x3.5mm jack) and a good headphone amp? my headphones are only 50 ohm (sennheiser hd598) I'm currently considering an Asus Xonar DSX. $55 Everyone seems to be recommending external amps like the Fiio E10 but It doesn't have 5.1 for speakers. thanks in advanced, people.

    RGB LEDs

I was going to cut them and extend with wires so I could have some behind my 3 monitors and the rest in the case 5 metres is enough hehe. From what I gather, the amps don't matter? so they won't bust themselves? I can rip the circle plug needed for the LEDs from an old transformer I have then join the wires to a molex plug. It's called modding for a reason Thank's everyone, fast replies.

    RGB LEDs

Hi I want to put these "5050 RGB LEDs" you can get on ebay into my computer. They require 12v, so a molex can supply that. But they say they draw 6Amps for 5 metres of LED. My power supply is a Seasonic G650 which says it can supply 56Amps on the 12v rail. My question is: if I wire the leds to the 12v rail via a molex connector, how does the amp draw work? will they draw 56Amps and then bust themselves? The other option is get a power supply/transformer from the seller which converts the wall power (240Vac to 12Vdc 6A) but they are expensive. references: The LEDs: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5M-5050-SMD-300-Leds-RGB-LED-Strip-Light-Lighting-Waterproof-IR-Controller-/261212186880?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cd175a900&_uhb=1 Power Supply specs: http://www.seasonicusa.com/G-series-450-550-650.htm please and thank you
  13. Thanks for the advice . Yeah the psu I ended up getting is the Seasonic G650w and this thing can run SLI..overkill but it will save money on the power bills right. Plus I didn't want to run into issues with the PC shutting down because the PSU couldn't supply enough power to the GPU, it clearly says on the bottom of the 7970 box, "recommended" to have a psu that has a rating of 42A on the 12v rail so it kinda conflicts with what you're saying . It's finished now, here's how it looks:) CPU Intel i5 4670 MOBO Asus B85-E RAM Corsair Vengeance 8gb PSU Seasonic G 650w CPU cooler Noctua NF-U12S Fan 1 Noctua NF-F12 Fan 2 Noctua NF-S12A HDD Seagate Barracuda 2TB OS Windows 7 64-bit GPU Asus 7970 TOP SSD Intel 520 120gb Case Bitfenix Shinobi (uploading pictures soon)
  14. I'm just doing some extra research after getting the GPU. (ASUS 7970) The Antec EA650 Platinum only delivers max 30A on the 12V rail, but the GPU requires 42A rating, what will happen if I run thsi configuration? will it not work or just be a bottleneck? D: EDIT: it will shut the computer abuptly if the load is too much EDIT: question, will the Seasonic g 650W 80+gold support my build? mainly concerned about the graphics card, takes 2 8 pins and 42A rating on 12v rail?
  15. Many thanks, I already have an SSD so I don't have to go and buy it
