  1. Hug your parents people, tell them how much they mean to you, and ask questions you've always been afraid to ask, because when they’re gone, you feel it in a way you cannot describe, and you're left with questions that can never be answered. It's even worse when you see what the loss of one does to the other. I will never get the image out of my head of watching my father fall to his knees and weep beside my mother.

I will always think of my father as being strong enough that I couldn't knock him down with a sledge hammer if I tried. He spent a lot of time away from us working to provide a spoiled life for us, and I know he hated every minute of it. It was by no means a suburban idyllic life for us because of his absence, but I know that if he could have, he would have gladly traded places with her if only to be spared the pain of her loss. Even if it was simply that selfish desire to spare himself that pain, I would not fault him for it.

I should not drink and watch Fringe. Or even just the end parts of Fringe. It gets me all sad like this. Lost my mother in 2016 and I'm still not over it, don't know if I will ever be. I can only hope I will ever have the chance to live up to what my father has endured.

    Obligatory FUCK CANCER.

  2. At a certain point, I have to ask myself whether or not the LTT forums as an organization are a state actor at the behest of China, based on their history of refusing to allow topics that are critical of China's numerous and varied human rights violations.

A refusal to allow criticism can be mistaken for, or rightly assumed as, tacit support of such actions.

Seriously staff, stop hiding behind the "no politics" rule, it only serves to make the forums look complicit, not objective. Not when the evidence of genocide is so readily available.

I assume this comment will get me perma-banned, but I no longer care. If the forum is going to passively cover up the kind of behavior that China is currently engaged in with the false pretense of objectivity or irrelevance (despite technology being inherently involved), it is no longer deserving of my time or effort, nor anyone else's.

I would encourage others to make their own informed decisions and assumptions, but at this point I feel it safe to say that the forums are as heavily compromised as Reddit is, based on how quickly they clamp down on ANY thread that is even remotely critical of the Chinese government.

There are many things we refuse to allow on this forum. There is a detailed description of what we don't allow listed in the Community Standards. Do you think we're paid off by all of them? Is there an anti-spam organization that pays us to remove spam? Because there's no other possible reason to remove spam unless we're getting paid, right?

We also don't allow name-and-shame threads calling out individual users on the forum. So if there was a thread that was critical of Trik'Stari, or any other forum user, we would also remove that. Based on the fact that we suppress such things, would you arrive at the same conclusion that we are being paid off by every individual forum member, including you? If so, this logic clearly does not produce reliable conclusions.

You're free to mistake it as whatever you want. We remove all political discussion, regardless of whether it's anti-China or pro-China or anti or pro any other nation. I suppose that must mean we're being paid off by every nation in the world, because there's simply no other possibility, right?

So... what you're saying is, we should make a special exception to our "no politics" rule, and say "no politics, unless you're saying bad things about China, then it's ok", and that's the objective and unbiased thing to do?

I don't believe you understand what objectivity is. We remove all political content regardless of political stance. This means we remove things even when we agree with them. That is the expected result of an unbiased system.

That is because your political affiliations blind you from being able to see objectively. If you weren't blinded as such, you would be able to see that we remove all political discussion that is critical of any government. However, you only see it when we remove the ones that you are sensitive to, and ignore the other removals. You are ignoring observation that does not fit your narrative. This leads you to incorrect conclusions.

This is a forum for tech enthusiasts. It has nothing to do with politics, just like political forums have nothing to do with tech. If political forums were being constantly peppered with threads about Intel vs AMD CPU performance, and GPU prices and those darn scalpers, they'd probably start removing them too. Not because they're secretly being paid by Intel or AMD to remove criticism, or that "it shows that they tacitly support scalping". But it sounds like you would think that would be the only possible explanation for such actions.

We do not allow political discussion. Which government the discussion is for or against is irrelevant. If you do not like that rule, and you want to talk about politics, then you can leave and go somewhere else intended for talking about politics. Just like if you like cars, you go find a place where people like to talk about cars, and if you like pets then you go find a place where people like to talk about pets. Go find a place that is interested in the things you want to talk about.

Don't go to a place that is intended for a completely different topic and extremely clearly marked as such and also has rules against talking about the things you like talking about, then start trying to have discussions about those things, and complain when you're turned away.

One of the core reasons for our no politics rule is that, in our experience, many people in the world are incapable of thinking rationally when politics become involved. This status update precisely demonstrates this and is in fact reinforcing our view that politics is not compatible with this forum.

People don't come to tech forums to read political anti-X government stuff. They come here to talk about computer technology. If you can't comprehend this, and exercise some adult decorum in restraining discussion of certain topics to the appropriate place (like everyone else does in their daily lives), then this simply may not be the right place for you.

Stand alone complex, enough useful idiots individually being idiots is indistinguishable from a conspiracy.

  3. So it's a few books later, and I still cannot begin to describe how good the Spellmonger series is.

My worry is that I only have one book to go in order to be current with the series, and thus forced to wait for the next book.

Holy. Shit, this series puts Game of Thrones to complete and utter shame, and is absolutely and entirely describable as an "epic". Seriously, whether or not you read it or enjoy it as an audiobook as I have, read this series.

I'd describe it as a comical Lord of The Rings, but it honestly puts both to shame. In terms of complexity, scale, quality, and how humorous it is at times, it outshines any other series I've ever read.

If I were Bezos, I'd be offering the author a Billion right now for the TV rights. The only other series I am aware of that is even remotely that good, is the Deathworlder's series.

So they're worried that they might offend skinheads? This is the problem with the "we can't offend anyone" brigade. Sooner or later you are going to offend someone, just saying "I like X type of sandwich" is enough to get you hate on todays internet. Company's need to grow a pair and stop worrying about the Twitter outrage mob.
  5. Where does one acquire such arcane learnings as the ways of printers? As it occurs to me, that being able to service and repair such devices might provide better recompense than my current profession.

The Sam and Max thing seemed completely ridiculous to me. Those jokes were so PG it's not even funny. If you find a name like Sissypants offensive, I suggest that you seek some form of counseling.

Kinda relevant (tangentially) to the recently locked thread on Sam and Max. When everything offends, nothing can occur.

I think it was the skinhead and another that might be a bit more offensive.

I don't think it's just the Twitter mob. There are some guys out there that are going to take things too far and, with the climate of today, it's only going to get worse.

  8. The point when people realize that offensive speech is indeed protected and allowed speech. In fact for society to function properly it MUST be protected and allowed. Being offended does not grant one special rights and privileges, nor should it.
  9. Have they not been doing Scrapyard Wars? I'm surprised Linus didn't find a way to do a Pandemic version. Call it a social distancing version, have everyone stand far apart and yell at each other.
  10. And then you turn 30 and realize you have nothing to fall back on. Age, is a complete and utter bitch, lemme tell ya. Usually doesn't seem to set in for people until they lose a parent.
  11. At this point, going back to the printing press would be preferable to actual modern printers. We have a bunch of different ones at work, ALL of them are pains in the ass for no real reason. Especially the networked printers.
  12. Better thermal paste couldn't hurt. Might raise the price $00.50 per unit, but it couldn't hurt.
  13. "Not thermal throttling". I've yet to see a factory Dell machine that wasn't running hot, IMHO. Although I've been off the repair bench almost 2 years now, maybe things have changed. Maybe I just expect too much out of a laptop form factor? We didn't really do desktops when I was on the bench.
  14. Do people actually expect good performance out of OEM machines? Because that makes me sad. I've worked on Dell, Lenovo, Apple, and HP machines for a while. None of them use thermal paste that is what I would describe as "adequate", in either their application method, or consistency. ALL of them have the consistency, at best, of chewing gum. At least that's been my experience.
  15. I'd sooner use an old Flip Phone than put up with this shit. Seriously, the value that companies place on advertising needs to come down significantly. I can say that advertising has an adverse effect on me. I'm more likely to avoid a company based on advertising than I am to purchase something from them. Some examples include Raid: Shadow Legends, Sonic (the restaurants), Almost every insurance company on the planet, just about every bank you can think of, etc. All of them are so ubiquitous in their advertising that I'm annoyed by their very existence as companies, so why in the hell would I give them money? Instead of spending money making obnoxious ads that no one wants to see, just skip the ad and have something pop up that says "X company paid for you to skip this ad!", that would actually get more attention than actual adverts do.

  17. Random thought: If it were possible to grind 2020 up into a powder, Joe Rogan would snort it.

  18. It depends, some dells have an internal daughter board (we called it an IO Card) that is almost always broken. It's not a GPU, just an internal secondary board meant to output a video signal to an external monitor. I need to know specifically how you hooked up this external display to the device in question. I assume vga or hdmi cable?
  19. I was a dell certified technician for 2 and a half years at the company I currently work for. It's either a dead LCD or bad video cable. Easy to replace by yourself if you can get the parts and a video on disassembly and reassembly for that specific model. Best of luck.
