Lol guys look at the XPS with the side panel off under "Design and Features". I died internally because the hydrogen atoms in my blood committed suicide and fused into helium lol.
No but seriously, for 2k at least make it look good inside like even private builders do. This computer is terrible. Why did they even show the inside? Aimed at people who think that all those wires in random colors make it very fast i believe *facepalm

steffen_anywhere reacted to Lord Nicoll in AMD Clarifies Why Threadripper Uses 4 Silicon Dies
Those dies cost money, the wafers they're cut from are not cheap, the indium soldering process is also expensive, indium only wets to gold, gold won't wet to silicon either, you have to vapour deposit I think it's vanadium oxide then titanium and then gold to get the indium to stick to the silicon die, and the IHS needs a gold plating, and indium isn't cheap either, that is a lot of expense for two dummy dies, I'm not totally convinced.

Ok, so I found some useful information. Ruby calls /bin/sh instead of /bin/bash, even if the command you're executing is a script that has the correct shebang at the start...
Will need to see if this solves my problems...

Adding this because it might help someone else in the future.

Hilarious.
Doesn't matter what they're doing. Fancy new processor on old XP means you're having a date with the bathtub. Server guys it's a different story.
Some nerd should pass though and scream "Linux!" though. Any minute...

steffen_anywhere reacted to Bananasplit_00 in Why did my GPU (kind of) explode? [pictures]
a small cap exploded on the "frame" of the chip. also have you doubble checked that you have no waranty? always worth checking it anyway the reason was probably a small spike in voltage in your wall power that then transfered all the way into your card, probably a minimal super minor one but it was enough to pop an already old and used cap

I think the weed had nothing to do with those. If you're experiencing anxiety, paranoia and sadness, please do yourself a favor and go for a consult with a therapist or a psychiatrist.
While marijuana is being prescribed by doctors as treatment for those conditions you mentioned, I don't think you should be self medicating and get a consult from a credentialed therapist or psychiatrist.

steffen_anywhere reacted to Misanthrope in I regret smoking weed.
Unfortunately there's still a lot of stigma: I have several friends that were huge smokers and at least 2 of them ended up giving it up and praising the decision claiming they were addicted and that it had negative effects.
Yet we don't have the same attitude towards alcohol: the same exact beer that would make most people cheery and lighthearted when done in moderation and in a good humor can turn people into violent, depressed assholes. The kind of drunk you end up being depends entirely on the kind of mood you are in when you start drinking that night. Most people seem to understand this but with weed not so much still.

steffen_anywhere got a reaction from Pendragon in What Ryzen means to Apple??
Yeah, that's possible to be honest... I use a MacBook Pro myself, but if I was looking at buying a larger, powerful mobile machine like today, I don't think I'd get the 15" MBP. The new design is nice, the display is amazing and so on. But when spending 3k on a laptop, it should have the best hardware suitable for its form factor/design that is available at the time. This doesn't mean GTX1080 and desktop i7. That wouldn't work for obvious reasons, not even taking the price into consideration. So really, all that's wrong with it, besides the price hike to the entire Pro line, is the GPU choice.
That said, there isn't really a suitable Nvidia part out there either. GTX 1050 and 1050Ti for laptops is still rated at 75W, but compared to the laptop GTX 1060 at 80W with significantly higher performance, I don't buy that number. I'm sure Apple could have used the 1050 and adjusted clocks accordingly, so that they end up with something that works in the MacBook Pro 15". They would have ended up with better performance (most likely). Given that it's really super thin, that's about all you can realistically expect from that machine.
Since maximum performance isn't even the goal with the MacBook Pro, especially in gaming, I find their hardware choices mostly reasonable. I would not spend that much on it though, personally.

steffen_anywhere reacted to Pendragon in What Ryzen means to Apple??
It was cheaper. I was looking at the deal and bids from AMD and nVidia. Considering Apple software can run well on literally anything that Apple makes, power wasn't a huge issue. Neither is thermal throttling because EVERY SINGLE Macbook Pro 15 since 2012 thermal throttles at stock and Apple does not give a fuck and neither do their customers. Lastly, these aren't gaming machines so to put in a nvdidia GPU in that is MORE expensive cuts into their bottomline. Because Apple uses proprietary software such as Final Cut Pro, there is not direct comparison to Windows so they literally don't give a shit. The new Macbook Pro runs Final Cut better than the last one and that's all it matters.

They're not network booting, the computer is just pulling your data down from the school server. The server just takes time to process all the requests.
With the Photoshop thing it could very well be loading the programme remotely.I think it's a licensing thing, my university does it too.

steffen_anywhere reacted to dany_boy in CMOS 4000-series gates for Arduino
Excuse me for asking, but why do you want the logic gates + arduino? You normally use either one or the other depending on the application. Arduino is easy, versatile reprogrammable and simple but slow and linear. Logic gates are stupidly fast and parallel but a hell of a lot more complex. You can get either of them really cheap from ebay, as long as you don't mind waiting around for your package to arrive.
The main difference between the B and UB is the transit time. UB is faster at 30ns, the B is slower at 60 ns. Some of the minutia is also different, The Vtrans seems to be sharper on the B model among other stuff. Just check the data-sheets:

source: https://community.amd.com/community/gaming/blog/2017/03/13/amd-ryzen-community-update?sf62107357=1
in the light of AMD's own investigations and other 3rd party investigation into Windows' 10 ability to properly identify Ryzen CPUs and assigns threads accordingly, AMD's Robert Hallock posted on AMD's blog:
so ... ladies and gentlemen - do not expect AMD / MicroSoft to release a W10 patch that will magically fix Ryzen's poor gaming performance - it is what it is and nothing will change that
however, AMD plans to release a patch that addresses the power plan issues, in April
so why W7 performs better?
because W7 is the better OS

No, if you're not giving the SSD to someone else, i.e. selling it, that's a waste of time and a slight reduction in lifespan.
