  1. There is no such thing as a former gamer, going from 9 hour daily sessions to a couple of hours every month still means you are a gamer. It isn't a profession or a career. Playing a simple phone game on the bus makes you a gamer. Oh you play games? You're a gamer. I work 9 to 5 Monday to Friday in an office, I finish at 5 then start Uber Eats until about 8 or 9 on my bicycle. Come back and sometimes play games or fall asleep to TV. I travel every weekend in my Van to mountain bike races, events and just the open country side. I spend time with friends, family and other relationships and don't have time to play games every day, because I would rather be doing something physical. BUT I AM STILL A GAMER I used to own a big rig when the i7 4790k and 980 ti was the number 1 thing to buy. Used to own that, the Switch, PS4 and Xbox One at the same time. I gave them all to family members over time. Then after a year of owning nothing but my phone and skipping a year of playing nothing other than what is available for Android.... which still makes you a gamer by the way! Now this bring me to why I am here, I was in a similar situation to you, but I was buying for myself. I want a daily driver laptop for everything you could think you would need a laptop for and the occasional bit of gaming. Seeing as I own 730 games on Steam, it would be nice to have some access to my paid for content, rather then none at all. So I bought an MSI GF65 the 2020, 2060 edition one. Put 16GB Ram in and added a 1TB M.2 to the spare SSD slot. It runs Netflix and Most games on Ultra/120fps because it seems the next generation of graphics cards are focused towards 4k and 1080p is the old standard of gaming that runs on anything like 480p
  2. Wouldn't a game that came out a decade ago use less resources than a game that came out today. Which would of also been designed for a GPU that runs probably around 50% slower than a modern card :). Therefore every game that came out a decade ago, badly optimized or not, should run reasonably well. Badly optimized games like Assassins Creed Black Flag run at 144fps on my 980 ti, but when it cam out it couldn't reach 30 fps on my 780. This game only came out in 2013. I would expect games that are badly optimized from 10 years ago to run at 8k now In fact Fallout 3 run at about 40 fps on my BFG 8800 GTX when it came out, crashed every five minutes and corrupted saves as it crashed going through doors. it has never got worst, because it has never been good lol
  3. Games like this are CPU intensive, wouldn't matter how many cards you tried if the CPU wasn't up to scratch. I find that I get 1080p 60fps anywhere in the game with just a 980 ti. Haven't tried the texture pack, series tend to of got more boring with each release after 3
  4. Which portable Linux would you recommend? Many come with preinstalled packages and some are only limited to predefined packages. is there any version that allows me to install full Linux software or do all of them do it and I have yet to discover this. I tried Ubuntu with consistency storage, but I couldn't find a consistent storage maker that would make use of my 128GB flash drive. So I am looking towards the portable flavors, do any of them have an IDE (Netbeans) as well as office suites
  5. Must just be the one I am using as it isn't a standard keyboard. Can't do that if the device isn't registering any input. I tried to be smart, I tried to program the key commands into the macros on my 600 mouse, the lights came on, but nothing lol
  6. Hello, My mother has given me a Mac to fix and I can't get around a problem. My little brother tried to put Windows on it, not for games, he's tied between platforms because of his studies. Every time I turn the Mac on I get presented with: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" You are thinking "command - option" right? Well it's a stupid wireless keyboard which seems to be out of sync. I thought Windows keyboards were compatible but it doesn't even power on (Num-Caps lock lights dead). Is the only way to fix this now is to buy an apple wired keyboard? I have access to my PC and another Mac if there is another way. Thanks people
  7. I solved the problem guys, a simple and stupid solution. The orientation of the water block made the difference lol. I fitted it so the cooler master logo (clearly missing) was the right way and now it works properly and have a max load temp of 58c. I had to change to a push air config to make the tubing longer to make it fit that way.
  8. You are right! The block isn't down all the way, However it is down as far as the screws will let it, there is a point screwing it down where there is no thread to go any further. i taken the block off and the thermal paste is literally a half compressed blob on the surface. I am going to take it off one more time and replace the thermal paste with a more premium one over the one that came with it. I am down to 76c now by refitting the block
  9. Been stressing the CPU for two hours now, still caps at 86c and floats around 80c
  10. I recently just bought a Cooler Master Nepton 240m, I expected significantly lower temps. What I get is between 77c and 86c using Intel Extreme Tuning Utilities stress test, I know this is normal as thermal throttling doesn't start until it gets to 100c. However this isn't a stock cooler! Idle is 22c, gaming is 55c, full load peaks at 86c. Whilst using almost every other piece of software I have, I expect to be around 55c. But I have to render 3D animations and a like for university. So whilst rendering animations it may be running at 86c overnight, not just for small burst of needed power. I have the pump and fans on full too, so there is no room for improvement there. After having a 6970 with a stock exhaust fan that sounded like a jet engine powering up, full speed 120mm fans are pretty much silent to me so all fans in my system are always 100%. So instead of tweaking around trying to discover the problem, if there was one. I have just came to the conclusion that the Cooler Master Nepton is just a poor device. So on that note, which is the best performing enclosed water loop you can buy as I will just go and buy that instead. Any tips on making it better I will be grateful for
  11. I ordered it, the elite was only 10 cheaper, this was significantly cheaper. Only thing i didn't like i show the radiator will be on the front blowing slightly heated air into the case. But I don't imagine it to make much of a difference
  12. Just watching Linus video on it now, only £10 cheaper. But its worth a look
  13. Hello, I am about to buy a new case, I am just about to buy the H440, however I don't want to spend H440 money. So I came here to see if anyone can recommend one before I order it. I am transferring my old internals to it so it has to be ATX and it has to fit a 240mm enclosed water loop. Thanks Guys
  14. Thanks people, I have just book marked all of these. This is my first time signing in here since I made the post. At the end of this I expect to make a game for release, preferably mobile platform. That way in 3 yeas when I graduate I will have a game and a few apps under a publisher name on an app store. So when I am applying for a programming position, I can point them to actual games/apps I have created. I can draw and I can create 3D models myself, but an entire game is a ridiculous amount of work for one person, so I want to buy them with a commercial licence.
  15. Hello People, Anyone know of any sites that sell sprites for games, Google search don't really bring up anything like what 3D has available (Unity Store) I am 4 years into Education, 3 years Game Development, 1 year Computer Science and I am have two options on the table. I can neither create 3D models and animations myself and use Unreal or use Visual Studio and SDL to make a 2D cell shaded game. I don't plan on making this an over night project, but something I can do for a few months to a couple of years, figured I got all this education, but nothing more than whats been asked of me to show for it. Some may say this isn't programming related, but I say it is because I can't be the only programmer that has game ideas and no art.
