  1. Hey, so my friend is planning to get a gaming PC around Black Friday, but he needs recommendations! Budget: <=700 USD *the cheaper the better! Location: US ^ in case you didn't catch that Purpose: Gaming (and of course standard usage); the most intense game played will probably be Tribes: Ascend Monitors/Peripherals: Undecided (recommend some stuff if you want!) Existing Computer: A Dell Inspiron (with i3) laptop... sooo yeah... ***This build is supposed to be for gaming (*the most intense game being "Tribes: Ascend") and is set to last for the next 3 (three) years...*** His brother is also helping him choose parts and we have mini Skype debates where we talk about what parts to put in. His brother has put this together so far: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/brian13579/saved/RXXYcf However, I am kind of against a few parts of the PC: - the i5... we could save like $100 on the CPU (let's go AMD ) and maybe up the graphics (to 770?). Or keep the graphics the same and save money. - the RAM could be cheaper... there are cheaper alternatives (Mushkin at around 66 USD) - the wireless card, but I don't know too much about that... will this be okay? - obviously, the list lacks the peripherals... so SUGGESTIONS PLEASE! WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE BUILD SO FAR? ANY SUGGESTIONS? DO YOU AGREE WITH SOME OF MY POINTS? Thanks in advance!
  2. Wut. It's going to go on sale... so that means the price will drop. Chances are it will be by a lot, sooo... JEEZ YOU PSYCHIC! The price only dropped to $144.99 USD 0_0
  3. Alright, thanks for the reply! Also, is there a specific version of the 260X that I should purchase, if I do?
  4. Yeah, the LinusTech Twitch channel is still doing Game 24/Mod 24.
  5. Thanks for the recommendation, but even with the 15% off promo code, it will still be ~$145 USD or so. I am hoping for a little cheaper (I changed the budget from 150 to 130 in the OP, just for the future repliers).
  6. Hey guys! I'm new into these desktop shenanigans. I don't know, but I may be making a budget computer in the near future and I was looking for some cheap graphics cards. I am looking for graphics cards that are at most $130 USD (I would prefer the price to be closer to $100, if possible). I did some quick research, but I have no point of references and my knowledge on this stuff is not very enhanced. This is what I found: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-2.html I also found another post with a similar topic, but I don't know if there are better options. From this research, the recommended ones are: - Radeon R7 260x --> probs best choice here - Radeon HD 7770 (or GHz edition?) Anything else that I should consider? Thanks in advance!
  7. I think that it's going into Project Tango tablet dev kit, but that's not really consumer-level stuff... (This is just a hypothesis, not a fact.)
  8. Note on the ADB recording (in case you didn't click on the link), it doesn't record audio and only supports up to three minutes of recording. If you are going with that method you can edit my batch program to make it repeat itself three times (copy and paste basically). If you need help, just message me. Also for another way to stream to your computer and record your computer screen, you can use Mobizen (free), but it's kind of weird to use.
  9. Do you have root? If you do, go with Rec. (trial & premium) Other notable ones are SCR Screen Recorder (Free & Pro)and Shou (free, allows streaming to shou.tv website). I recommend you try these ones out, they are all pretty good, but make sure to find one that fits you. I tried these on a rooted Nexus 7 2013 and this is how I ranked them: - NOTE: these aren't official and I didn't do like benchmarks or framerate tests, just casual observations. Also, I judged them while recording Modern Combat 4 and swiping around in the launcher. 1) Rec. - smoothest, but only compatible with Android 4.4 (KitKat) 2) SCR Pro - good performance and maybe most popular? But, it's very well built. Compatible with pretty much anything you would bother recording with. 3) Shou - cool with lots of features (I think it required 4.4 as well as it used native recording similar to Rec.), but kinda laggy and my device heated up (esp. when streaming, naturally) If you don't have root, a.) Recordable (trial & paid) - allows on device recording without root, but requires a quick setup with your computer (simple) b.) BBQ Screen (paid) - allows you to stream (almost seamlessly!) to your computer (via Wi-Fi). Then you can just record your computer's screen. c.) ADB recording (KitKat 4.4) - setup ADB (Google it ), then (if you use Windows), you can use my batch program from here. I kinda stopped the project after a while... but it should still work. [You don't have to use it, you can just type in the commands manually if you wish.] I hope this post kind of helped? Happy searching!
  10. I don't really remember how I found LinusTechTips, all I know is that I am soooo happy that I found it. Now, I'm sure every single post is gonna ramble on and on: Linus I love you, this place is heaven on Earth, computers, banana, marshmallow guns, banana, rigged strawpolls, graphics, NEED MOAR RAMMM... but, I am a) too lazy to write out all the times I laughed/learned something new from this community/channel, and b) I don't wanna write what everyone else is basically writing. Anyways, in terms of the future, I don't have much to recommend. You guys a pretty much perfect... Maybe I would enjoy seeing more mid-range devices being reviewed? The reason for this is because I feel that many of the products reviewed on the channel are stuff that I drool over and then realize that they are more than I would like to pay for. (I love the under $100 videos!). I would also enjoy seeing more giveaways, hehehehehe, wouldn't we all? I really can't think of anything else to type about... All I can really say is: Thank you Linus Tech Tips for making each day better with your videos! Bananas
  11. I would suggest Nexus 10... but it is really dated and Google really needs to friggin' release a second version. However for now, I would say go with Galaxy Note/Tab (Pro) 10.1 tablets (as mentioned above) or Xperia Z2/3 tablets which have nice SoC's and that fancy stuff. Also I recommend checking out some tablets that carry Tegra 4 processors (http://www.nvidia.com/object/tegra-phones-tablets.html) or wait until the Tegra K1 is put into a 10-inch device. There is a lot coming out in the near future, so you can (and probably should) wait a little until the launch season.
  12. Any good laptop RAM that you guys recommend? Also, I was wondering if you guys know any good websites/stores to buy reliable RAM at a cheap(er) price. I am looking for a stick of 4GB SO-DIMM RAM. I did a quick search and it seemed like Crucial and Kingston RAM was recommended. What looks good so far (I am trying to look for a cheaper price... 'cause I'm a cheapskate ) http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005LDLV6S Thanks in advance!
  13. If only it had some graphics... but still a killer deal!
  14. I like the almost "no comprimises" idea of the laptop. It has high-performing specs and still maintains the sexiness/build quality that I prefer in my devices.
  15. Also, since you probably want something other than games... Normal Apps AccuWeather - good weather app AirDroid - really good! Allows for wireless file transfer from computer to Android device (there are other apps like this, but this was the first one I discovered) App Cache Cleaner - the name says it. Useful for lower-end devices or just if you want to preserve some storage Aptoide - "your own market" aka pirate apk's uploaded by other people! YAY! Calco - cool modern-styled calculator app CatLog - a debugging app (might require root). Useful for troubleshooting ES File Explorer - my favorite file explorer/manager (there are others) Fast Reboot Pro - another app that can help speed up your device... clears RAM Flipboard - news application, simple/free to use GoComics - read some comics (i.e. Calvin & Hobbes) Google Now Launcher - "the Nexus 5 experience" Kik - good, free messenger Pocket - save links and such for global access Soundcloud - mobile app for the website (music streaming) Stark - nice, modern, and simple icon pack Supercard - really good flash card application (for studying). Can access your Quizlet cards Weather & Clock Widget - another weather app, but with nice widgets with plenty of customization Root Apps Freedom - may or may not be illegal... free in-app purchases (USE AT YOUR OWN RISK) Game Hacker - a good speed-hacking app (even works on server-sided games if you use it correctly) Game Killer - another goo game-hacking app. More in depth and can be used to edit bigger values Lucky Patcher - patch apps to block ads or remove license verification. There are also some system-wide tweaks (i.e. odexing system apps) Root Browser - a really good file manager for managing certain root files Root Cleaner - speeds up device (reloads System UI) SCR Pro - a screen recording app WIFI Key Recovery - a Wi-Fi password recovery app (or Wi-Fi password stealer after someone enters their password into your device). There are many apps like this Xposed Installer - if you have root... GET THIS NOW! (read about it online, first)
  16. First off... pirating Secondly... there are so many topics like this!!! Check out the replies to this post. Lastly... these are all the games I recommended from the post above
  17. Yeah, they are shutting it down, but I think (according to news and rumors, etc.) Google will still release the Nexus 8 due to the anticipation. First news link that popped up when Googling Nexus 8: http://www.christiantoday.com/article/google.nexus.8.release.date.delayed.q4.2014.production.starts.august.says.report/37589.htm
  18. Wait for the next Nexus tablet There are rumors of the "Nexus 8" which, if it does come out, will come out during the summer.
  19. I find it dumb and it will probably be another re-brand like all the previous models. "But they are going to increase size!!!!!" ... OMG NO WAY! DUDE!!! WAIT WHAT ABOUT SAMSUNG PHONES AND OTHER ANDROID PHONES??? "They won't have a big screen..." ...oh wait...
  20. Android. Even stock Android is great! Then, there is the potential to root and put a custom ROM on most Android phones. Android all day, any day!
  21. If you want stuff with legit buttons, Shield all the way! (Also, I recommend you wait a bit for the Shield 2, if it does come out) If you would be fine with a normal touch tablet, I would go with the EVGA Tegra Note 7.
  22. /!\ WARNING /!\ Do not get an Apple device. They are overpriced and there are significantly cheaper and more productive alternatives. (Side note: I am not saying Apple devices are terrible, they are decent and well optimized, but other devices will last longer and be able to do more.) Since it is a replacement for a MacBook, I decided to find bigger devices that I thought were outstanding specs-wise. ALTERNATIVES: Google's Nexus 10 [Specs] - Stock Android (supported by Google) - Exynos 5250 (Samsung manufactured), Dual-core at 1.7 GHz - 2 GB RAM - ~299 ppi, 10.1-inch screen - 16/32 GB - WARNING: The current (only available) version is already 2 years old... a new improved device is due to come out (hopefully). ASUS Transformer Pad TF701T [Specs] - Comes with keyboard and trackpad dock - NVIDIA Tegra 4 chipset (most powerful gaming mobile gaming chipset, at the moment), Quad-core at 1.9 GHz - 2 GB RAM - ~299 ppi, 10.1-inch screen - 32/64 GB Others: MS Surface (both generations are fine), Lenovo has some nice stuff. Look for tablet PC's, they match your criteria pretty well. For smaller tablets: - ASUS/Google Nexus 7 (2013) or the Nexus 8 (next generation) is rumored to come soon - EVGA Tegra Note 7 - (iPad Air)
