The old iMac G3s were AiO s that superficially looked like they were only the monitor.

SUPPOSITION :-Perhaps he had seen one of them and only dimly remembering seeing a crt thought "Ooo that's old, maybe it is that old computer".

For college we had an area on the network mapped as our own drive, all data we created was stored to this .  Local hard drives were imaged every day on boot-up Our log-in enabled acces to this drive but no matter what we did we couldn't change the abminisration of the network.

The computer lab PCs were a different kettle of fish but they had been built and re-built so many times they each had to have work arounds for various issues  "oh thats the one with the )()*&% connector, just use some jumper cables", " oh thats the one with the supposedly lockable hard drive caddie, stick a paper clip in that hole the key was lost four terms ago..".

Libraries etc often have this "clean image every day" approach as joe public has a habit of making a mess of their lovely set-up

Possibly some half remembered folk lore about putting hard drives in freezers to get them to work one last time.

CAN actually work, but it is a bit of a "hail mary" try.
Have heard of putting MBs in the oven to make the solder flow again to 'repair' them , Have never actually done it nor do I know anyone who has but have heard of the practise.

Blame her for having the Lappy turned on.  The components are fine getting wet it is power going through te components that cause a problem.

See this video of someone actually immersing a MB in water then letting it dry ou (not enough at first) then powering it on, no probs.

Service yes (that was what the oil and water were about) running repairs probably not (well without specialist tools and replacement parts).
Even changing the filters on some modern cars are "garage jobs".

Try sorting a lamda sensor in the dark at the side of a road.  Now try the same but cleaning the carb jets on an old fashioned type.

Well someone who has no interest in what the teacher is talking about hears him waffle on about "graphics/pictures WHY" that person glances up and half notices a picture of some electronic 'thing' with a round thing in the middle.  What would you think it was?

If you are goimg to put ssd's in dont worry about the space as ssd have no moving parts and are lightweight you van use double sided tape and stick it whereever you want, just make sure you can get the sata power and sata cables where you put the dawm things.

Just because some of the items are working does NOT mean the power supply isn't bad. A power supply tester only tests voltage at no load it does not put a load on the system. Better to test the system with a "known good" power supply
I'm afraid your going to have to do the whole trouble shooting thing.

You will have an extremely difficult time removing standoffs by hand . Can you 'borrow ' pliers or a small adjustable wrench/spanner, perhaps a screwdriver with many optional bits sporting a nut driver.

Do NOT be tempted to run the system with the standoffs that are not being used in place however generally it is not the end of the world if not all positions have a stand off in them.
