I would have thought nearly all native English speakers would recognise Shakespear
The full qoute is "the lady doth protest too much,methinks" (it's from Hamlet)
But as you are not a lady, doth is a bit archaic and I had already used methinks I shortened the quote to "protest too much". Here is a wikilink to the quote, were it comes from and how it is meant.

It has been used as a figure of speech, in various phrasings, to describe someone's overly frequent and vehement attempts to convince others of some matter of which the opposite is true, thereby making themselves appear defensive and insincere
I haven't replied in the TS thread as I don't care about that situation but I did want to reply as to what I meant.
