    Audio crackling

You try muting your system sounds in the volume controls in windows?
  2. Well, on the bright side, you don't have to worry that your amp isn't optimal, and you wouldn't need to buy a soundcard for it. On the downside, EVERYTHING is on one gadget and if it breaks you're out the whole kit and caboodle. Too much bundling in my opinion. Also the quality of each component tends to be sub-par for the price.
  3. The hidden extra cost of the HD600s is the O2+ODAC you'll need to drive them at 300Ohms impedance
  4. Different hi-fi look, same overpowered hi-fi components. Whoop-de-doo indeed. At least the "symetrical upsampling" nonsense is over. For now.

Overclocked my CPU 8MB cache to 20gigs and inst…

I just overclocked my headphones and unicorns jumped out of the cups and we went for a ride across the butterfly plains. Frequency response is now perfect. There is however, some sibilance. I should try rolling a different Op-Amp...
  6. Yeah, sure. I understand. I'll add it if everyone agrees and we can state that above the list. EDIT: Also, is that enough spoilers, or should I do every question?
  7. That's usually true, but every headphone is different. It's why I don't try to make too many generalities about each design type. One I WOULD make is: Closed is for recording use in a sound booth, Open is for everywhere else. Both leak sound, just closed much less. For consumers, obviously a closed headphone keeps them from bothering other people while listening to music, or being AS bothered by others (sound still leaks in of course). However, both types can produce flat responses if designed right. So I don't like to knock either design on particularly any point other than it's USE.
  8. He's like one of Jerma's "baby sphees"
  9. Sure, as soon as I set up a $10,000 kickstarter for buying myself a damn dscope, we can try MEASURING onboard. Until then, my personal ABX experiments at the SAME VOLUME with my biostar motherboard's ALC892 have left me wondering if I could even beat that test compared to my O2+ODAC. Only thing onboard really lacks is volume for higher (80+ Ohms) impedance headphones. I could easily ABX every ONE of my headphones against any other, though. Even if I was totally numb and couldn't feel the pads on my head. So yeah, that's my opinion on it, you COULD care about differences in source output, but that's 1/1000th of the difference your headphones make in that chain.
  10. Just get the headphones, something less than $100 like these: This is a good place to start. Use them with your onboard and don't look back. I beg of you not to go blow $300 on headphones and soundcards on your first go-round. Some of us just have a problem. 558's will work too, anything under 80 Ohms impedance should be fine on most modern onboard chips.
  11. impedance != resistance. Resistance is impedance at a given sound frequency in this case. That can vary GREATLY. You can't just insert a resistor in-line. There are things called "attenuators" that can work in this way, but they'd be a poor thing to put in FRONT of an amp. Someone on Head-Fi attenuated his Magni by attaching them to the INPUTS on the amp. You can't do that with the Essence STX though. Besides, isn't it sort of silly that you buy a $200 sound card and then have to CUT it's power to make it work with your headphones? But yeah, you are right, I was exaggerating a bit, but my point still stands that there are not many. Feel free to criticize though, I can take it!
  12. Let's see, it'll need to be at least 300 Ohms impedance AND under 100 SPL to even need the "High Gain" setting or under 85 SPL for the "Extra High Gain" setting, so: Beyer DT880 600 Ohm Beyer DT990 600 Ohm Beyer Tesla T1 Beyer Tesla T5p AKG K240M (the old 600 Ohm one that Quincy Jones ACTUALLY used in studio) (not made anymore, and the new version of it, the K242, is 50 Ohms) AKG K1000 (Finally, something for that extra high gain setting!!!) (It's not made anymore, so it doesn't count) Sennheiser HD600 Sennheiser HD650 Sennheiser HD800 Hifiman He-6 (5 watts per channel?!? Really, Hifiman?) (probably would get loud enough on high gain, and the impedance is too low!) Uhhh, did I miss any? Anything under 80 Ohms is incompatible due to the output impedance, and besides you'll have hardly ANY volume control at those low impedances or even higher impedances up to 250 Ohms So, yeah 10, sorry man. I was totally exaggerating. It's not that the Essence STX is useless, it's just nobody makes these sort of headphones anymore. Why are we still making amps for headphones that are going extinct? It makes no sense.

  14. Don't tell that to head-fi:
  15. See, this is how you tell we have a problem.
  16. Unfortunately that compliance only involves a check to beats. Those are the same chips and circuits in other smartphones. Unless I missed something in a newer phone...
  17. Gee, whatever would I do without my Hifiman He-500 headphone driver software? I'd have to use the windows standard one, and that's just not cool! modern desktop PC onboard will usually provide a similar if not audibly indifference result from most soundcards when driving low impedance headphones. period. That's the best result. Even worse if the output impedance on the dedicated soundcard is too high it could bloat the bass OR the treble on your headphones depending on how they're designed. Price isn't even important. If your headphones aren't over 100 Ohms AND under 100 SPL(db/mW sensitivity) (There are some exceptions!), you don't need a dedicated soundcard unless it's a very poor (as in OLD) onboard. In fact, for low impedance headphones, buying one can make things WORSE not better. -maximum volume -inputs and outputs -FANCY CAPS bout it. All the Xonars use the same damned driver even.
  18. 1. your sound card is really ONLY good with high impedance headphones like the 600/650 or DT880/990pro. Price really has nothing to do with it. 2. In terms of OVERALL quality? just barely. In terms of sound quality alone? No, not really. 3. For $350? Swap the Essence for a lower output impedance amp/dac like the FiiO E10 or O2+ODAC. Or rather, don't bother if you already like what you have.
  19. Monster didn't design them, neither did beats, a third party company in China was responsible for the original design, and then Lovins and Dre screwed fixed it all up for the US market. Those designers were responsible for Fanny Wang later, btw. The more you Know...
  20. I'd like to think the world's worst headphones would hurt your ears, head, and pocketbook equally in inconceivable ways.... oh wait, that headphone already exists:
  21. EDIT: sorry bladeofgrass I was dealing with irl and having to write letters to a certain youtuber about interconnects. Totally forgot about you. You and your near doubling the length of the FAQ.
  22. They should put in for a job at QVC. They'd fit right in.
  23. K240s is sometimes in that range.
