  1. Thanks all for your responses and advice. I think I've gather enough feedback to make a fairly informed buying decision. This community remains an awesome place on the internet for PC hardware advice. Keep doing the Lord's work! Thank you all once again.
  2. Yes, I'm planning to stick with 1440p. Hoping to keep this PC a long time. 5 years minimum.
  3. Thank you! Your £1550 build seems right up my alley. Your choice of 7800X3D catches my eye. Would you say it's worth going with that CPU when compared to the 7600 non-X version? It has 2 extra cores and the 3D v-cache but it costs almost an extra £200, which almost double the price of 7600. Do you think it's a worthwhile investment for gaming workloads? Also, if I was in the market for a £400 CPU, would I not be better served by 7900X, which has an additional 4 cores and it costs pretty much the same?
  4. Thanks for your response. Wow, this shows how high-end a PC one can build with £2000. I probably set my budget a bit too high. I'm looking for something that strikes a bit better of a balance between price and performance.
  5. CPU: Intel i7 4770k (The CPU is functional if a bit slow in 2023. Notably though it doesn't have a TMP chip I can't install Window 11 and Window 10 will eventually stop receiving updates) Cooler: Corsair H100i GTX (It works right now, but it's old so I expect the pump to die any time now. I think I'd rather switch to an air cooler and avoid the hassle) Motherboard: ASUS Z87-Pro (It works fine but of course it's tied to Intel 4th gen core CPUs) RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3 16GB (2 x 8GB) @ 1866MHz (Works fine) Storage: Samsung 850 Evo 500GB SSD (It works right now, but as its old so it could start failing at any moment. Plus, all my storage is SATA, so I'm looking to upgrade to NVME) GPU: EVGA Geforce GTX 780Ti (This GPU is dying) PSU: Corsair HX1000i 1000W 80+ Platinum (It works perfectly fine as far as I can tell) Case: Corsair Carbide 300R (The case is fine, but it's kinda ugly. Plus it wastes internal space on old things like optical drive bays. Looking to get something a bit more modern)
  6. Thank you for your reply. I'm planning of salvaging some case fans from the existing system, so I will probably skip buying new fans. I think will take your motherboard advice and step down to a MSI B650 board. The RAM suggestion is also really good. I will go with your suggested memory. I'm curious about your CPU suggestion. Do you think there's a benefit in going with 7700 and having the extra 2 cores for gaming? I'm almost considering stepping down to 7600 non-X version. It also comes with a cooler in the box, so maybe I could get away with not buying a CPU cooler at all. What do you think about CPU options for gaming?
  7. Thank you! The Price difference between AK620 and NH-D15 appears to be not too large. But the Peerless Assassin 120 SE looks like really good value. I might still go with NH-D15 since it appears to have enough thermal headroom for me to upgrade in the future, or potentially carry it forward to a future build some 10 years down the line. However, I will strongly consider the Peerless Assassin. Thank you for the advise about memory. That's a really good catch. I had completely missed the news about AMD EXPO. I will go with the following for my RAM: G.Skill Flare X5 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30
  8. Thank you very much. I'll make sure to watch it.
  9. Thank you for the quick reply. I didn't realise that 7600X would get toasty. Should I be looking at something more capable than NH-D15? By the way, is the memory frequency and latency a good fit for Ryzen 7000 series? I'm aware that AMD CPUs like to have RAM that plays well with the infinity fabric clock.
  10. Budget (including currency): £2000 (My budget is not strict) Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: This will be a gaming PC primarily. I intend to play a wide range of games. New releases mostly, for example Starfield. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): My resolution is 1440p. Hello good people of the tech tips forums! It has been a long time since I've posted here. I've been using a PC that I've built circa 2014 and I've recently started running hard crashes that I suspect are caused by a dying GPU. However, since my entire computer is so old at this point, I've decided to build a whole new system, rather than try and mend the existing one. I haven't been fully keeping up with the latest developments in the PC hardware space, so I thought I would validate my new build plans against your collective wisdom. My budget is just a rough figure. I'm okay with going above or below that number. Generally, I'm looking for good performance without going for the very top of the line parts. I'm thinking of going with an AMD GPU this time around since I've heard that their graphics cards tend age more gracefully and the 16GB of VRAM seems like a good thing to have, seeing how games appear to use more and more memory as time goes on. Feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken. CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black Motherboard: MSI PRO X670-P WIFI ATX RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws S5 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-5600 CL28 Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 GPU: Sapphire PULSE Radeon RX 7800 XT PSU: Corsair HX1000i 1000W 80+ Platinum Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/fvvNcH I'm aware that the PSU is overkill for the build, but I'm actually just planning to salvage this power supply from my existing system. That being said, I do have a couple of specific questions: Is NH-D15 a reasonable choice for 7600X or is it complete overkill? Do you think I might run into any clearance issues with the Corsair 4000D? Am I just wasting money by going with a X670 board? Should I go for B650 instead? Beyond that, do you guys have any thoughts? I would sincerely appreciate any feedback. Thank you all so very much!
  11. Name: Paragon CPU: Intel Core i7 4770k @ 4.2Ghz GPU: 2 x GTX 780 Ti in SLI (Test does not support SLI, so single GTX 780 Ti for this purpose) RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB @ 1866MHz Score: 6.3
  12. Truly hope he recovers. To me he is the John Maynard Keynes of gaming critique / journalism. His death would be a loss for all PC gamers.
  13. Lunacy. Calculating Pi does not make one a rocket scientist. No one individual should be working on space exploration. It's a task for an organization, which will likely provide the required compute power. Bitcoin mining on 2 980Ti cards is not ideal, nor do you need all that RAM or CPU performance. Most importantly, mining bitcoin hardly pays for the power it consumes. Only way you could need that power is if you were running a server, in which case why the GPUs? Also, you're really skimping on storage for a server. I can only make 2 conclusions: 1. This is a gaming rig with a pointless amount of RAM and CPU power. 2. This is a troll post. If for whatever reason you actually decide to go ahead with that build, I hope it makes you happy. Sometimes people have irrational dreams and that's okay.
  14. There are many types of alcohol and I really had not previously looked up which one is used by hospitals. Yes, though. It turns out that is what hospitals use.
  15. Yes, I meant "I would be doing a disservice". I am horrendous at spotting my own typos.
