TomvanWijnen got a reaction from PeachGr in Linus home (not creepy)
I've also thought, "man, I'd love to be able to install air conditioning like that in our house!", but I don't think it's even possible in our house. The floors, even those between the higher levels, are made out of thick concrete. It's thick enough to significantly hinder wifi signals. The interior walls are made from drywall. Two of the exterior walls are thick concrete, while the other two are bricks on the outside, and something seemingly hard on the inside. Linus has a massive space in between the highest floor and the roof (that could've been used to make more rooms in...), while in our house we have a proper highest floor, which has a thin ceiling, after which comes a lot of insulation, and then just the roof.

So there is unfortunately no space at all to put any of the cool stuff linus has put in his home. Despite that, it's still fun and interesting to watch the videos, I think.

And, yeah, I agree, he drills in his walls all the time. The last time we drilled in our walls was many many years ago.  We'd like to get a way to get an ethernet cable up to the first floor, but that seems to mean drilling, so we haven't done it (yet?).

Don't worry about bottlenecks. The only question you should ask is if the CPU can deliver the performance level you expect. It doesn't matter if there is unused GPU power in some situations, just as it doesn't matter if there is CPU power unused at times. You need enough CPU, and you need enough GPU for your performance target.

Which is almost nobody hence they dropped the prices but as greedy as they are they dropped as little as possible but again I doubt they will have many buyers for decades the pries were around 450-500$ for the flagship and that is the right value..

a GPU SHOULD NOT cost as much as the rest of the ENTIRE PC because if you did not realize it even a 3rd tier RTX 2080 used to cost around 1000$... which is about 50% of the rest of the cumputer an average 2080 user would build around it...

It is ridiculous. Its like buying a house and the TV costing half of the budget you paid for the house.

You probably did not understand my initial post because that was exactly my point.

Or in other words a 300 price drop on a 500$ greedy price inflation(=1000$ total) is as little as possible and in no way a deal.

500$ is the maximum a rational human being should spend on his graphics card (and that graphics card for that price should be a flagship)  even if you go to the WC and poop 100$ bills it doesnt mean that you need to throw them blindly I am pretty sure that even rich people try to excuse their expenses.

Yes, it depends on the definition of a scam being something other than what the definition of a scam is.
"“We’re looking at different marketing promotions to attract new members and give them a great Netflix experience,”"
Getting free samples of something is not a scam.
Nor are paranoid delusions re: iOs

What kind of entitled world are we in where people cry "scam" cuz you get a sample of pay service for free, but not the whole thing.

What think they mean is that, say you had 10 cores for 500$ or 20 cores for 1000$. If the rest of your system is 500$ either way, your total costs will be 1000$ or 1500$, so 100$ per core vs 75$ per core. In dollar per core value, the 20 core variant is much better. Whether you need those cores or not, then becomes an interesting question.

E bikes are crazy efficient while being not all that expensive. you can get 30-40 miles of range at 30mph for 1k. and your running cost is pennies per miles. they are often above 200 mpg (equivalent)

TomvanWijnen reacted to harryk in Any way to make your travel faster???
    Here's some numbers.

To travel as fast as possible (via conventional Newtonian physics) we want to accelerate until we reach the half-way point and then decelerate an equal amount so we actually reach the destination and not overshoot.

The distance from Cairo to Munich is 2620 km. We have a target travel time of 60 s, so we have 30 s to travel 1310 km with a constant acceleration, then 30 s to slow down.

    Δx=v0t+0.5at2     ->     1310000 m = 0*30 s + 0.5*a*30 s2     ->     a = 2911 m/s2

That is quite a lot of acceleration. After 30 s, at the half way point, we will be traveling at 314400 km/hr. This is ~5x faster than any man made vehicle including space probes.

Assuming we could make such a vehicle, the journey would not be survivable by any human. 2911 m/s2 corresponds to 297 g (or 297 times the force of gravity). The highest recorded g-force that a human has survived is 214 g during a crash in NASCAR. Though that was only for an instant, not the sustained 30 s we need. The highest recorded sustained g-force that a human has survived is 25 g for ~1 s. Experts estimate that humans cannot survive more than 20 g for 10 s, or 10 g for 60 s.

In summary, you're not traveling from Egypt to Germany in under a minute.

It's because people have different wishes for what they want their stuff to do. When I bought my OnePlus 7 Pro, sure, there were more phones out there at the same price point, but not many that had a popup camera. Also not many that had some other features I was looking for. Other people will have different desires from a phone than I do, so for them a different phone is fitting.

TomvanWijnen reacted to EChondo in Worlds First 360Hz Monitor Detailed & Launching in September 2020
Well considering the monitor is marketed as "Esports", then it's probably for people competing in tournaments with 2080ti's/Titans and 10900k's playing CS:GO, Valorant, etc. at bare bones graphics settings.

This monitor isn't exactly meant for consumers, just the 1% of people playing video games. Plus you probably won't see a 360Hz 1440p panel for another couple of years.

And besides that, 1080p is still a very good resolution...why hate on it? Keeps performance requirements and costs down a bit, especially when people who would buy this monitor certainly won't be using 1440p and will probably run their games in 1280x960 for 4:3 and upscale it...

I'm using a S2719DGF and loving the 27"/1440p due to the real-estate, but if I could have a higher refresh rate then I would take it. 360Hz would probably be my cap(well 240Hz would be I think, but 360Hz is a good buffer for 99% of people out there in my opinion).

Also 1080p wasn't common in early 2000's, I still had 1680x1050 and 1440x900 monitors well into the mid-2000's...

A question of semantics and scope of view.  Given a societal rather than personal scope of view preventing that particular event against yourself doesn’t stop AN event from happening.  It merely stops THAT instance.  With a macro view if the perp victimizes someone else instead nothing at all has been prevented.  It’s a bit similar to truthers who make the argument that masks dont do anything because wearing a mask doesn’t stop you from getting the disease.  Given a sufficiently limited view it works.  Masks don’t effectively prevent the disease from attacking YOU they prevent a person wearing a mask from spreading it as well.  The result is if everybody wears them they DO work, because it prevents the disease from spreading at all.  As such going around without a mask is a lot like going around strapped and randomly shooting at people.

By fighting crime with weapons, you're not really preventing it from happening. You're only pushing the problems away from you. The only real way to prevent crime from happening, is to look at the underlying reasons for crime. These issues might be poverty, bad education, or a bad social system. The vast majority of criminals isn't plain evil. And the reasons for crime can't be solved with weapons imo. However, achieving might need affordable healthcare, good free education and in general a more social society. While I would appreciate all of this, some people would call it evil communism.
I really don't want to go into the politics to far because of the community standards, but I think, that I can call your behaviour egoistic in some way, since it doesn't solve the problem for the society, only for you.

Edit: And if your only argument is your big fat rifle, you don't really have any real arguments imo.

I totally agree with @WereCatf. To all those American prep people: Did you ever thought about the reasons, why your society is so violent, that you have to carry weapons? Maybe you have too many weapons in the open public. You wouldn't have to carry a weapon, if other people didn't. And btw, crime can be fought with different techniques than just more weapons. Ever wondered, why America has such high crime and incarceration rates and other countries don't?
I mean, go on and do whatever you want, but I'm happy to live somewhere, where this stuff isn't the way it is in the US.

I know easier said than done, but this might be the year to have a discussion with your family about holiday gift spending. Spend time with your wife choosing inexpensive gifts for your kids, or home made/crafted items that have little to no cost to them.

Example: Giving someone a tin of homemade cookies instead of a retail purchased gift. Buy an old piece of crap furniture and restore it. Etc.

I know with kids, gift envy is real and can be difficult to deal with, but going massively into debt during this crisis is frankly a very bad plan, if you can simply... spend less on gifts.
