True. If you can't think beyond the instructions, then I wouldn't say that the thing is sentient. Intelligence is more than what you learned at school (Officially and unofficially), and being able to comprehend abstract and physical realities takes actually living and comprehending reality. I don't think these things could comprehend thought processes involving how or why. I also wouldn't count something with no agency in its existence as "intelligent".
That said, the title made the strangest images come to mind...........*Fuckin' porn*..................

Well said, friend. Those who rant about piracy being such a horrendous crime sound to me like they're just trying to justify why they never torrent anything, when really they're either too scared or unintelligible to do it themselves. There are a lot of uses for torrenting that aren't just for evil wizards, and when you really get down to it, people are gonna share stuff like that regardless. Piracy laws are silly. If you don't want people to pirate your stuff, make them want to pay for it. Publishers like EA make a lot of people feel like buying their games is a far worse crime than pirating them. This is their issue, not public trackers.

The setting is fine, but the characters? Like, no no no no no no no! A Mafia game with the characters against italian Mafia? And with a protagonist whom cannot be a made man anyway? Gonna buy it if I find it at 15-20€ if it is what it looks like now!

Looks like GTA
a Mafia game not about Italian mafia ?
Mob mentally?
i mean even LA noire was in 1940's , this just is too much modern,.... just think of all the movies that came in the 70-80's...
not so much of a time period is it

Trailer looks nice, but not really Mafia-esque. This might have also worked as some completely new IP. Am still excited about the game, hoping it will be better than 2 which wasn't really great imo. We'll probably never get a Mafia as good as the original, but here's hoping.

you should sit down, this one is pure gold from Microsoft
---
at least they recognized GFWL was a complete failure
what does that all mean? will it mean MS will be releasing their games over STEAM platform? you bet your arse they will
why is MS pushing STEAM? because MS, beyond XBox services on Windows 10 doesn't hany any other intention for PC gaming - MS' idea of PC gaming doesn't go beyond XBox; that's their primary platform and will stay as such

I'm also going to play a bit of Devil's Advocate in favor of Microsoft. I have close friends that have worked in game and software development as either indies or within a company. Many have struggled when it came to piracy and all of the ones that could easily call themselves indie game devs have found themselves either going bust or having to sell their IP to other dev studios. I've dabbled into some light game development at some point and I can safely say it's not an easy or highly rewarding activity (financially), specially when your game/software only gets a couple of sales every now and then while a pirated version gets downloaded more frequently than you actually make a sale.
Steam has made purchasing games far more accessible through their sales and if you're not willing to support the developer(s) then you aren't entitled to play the game. If you're unsure if the game is worth spending money on you can find alot of reputable reviewers out there (TotalBiscuit springs to mind) that will lay out in clear therms why you should or shouldn't buy the game. This isn't the 90s or early 00s when saying that you want to try the game before buying it was a somewhat good excuse to pirate it (hell, even back then you could just get a demo and see if you liked the game before buying it!).
I'll admit to having pirated back when buying games was hard (mostly due to ridiculous pricing or availability issues), but once the ability to actually support the developers arised I've started buying the games and have never looked back (sure, I slightly regret jumping onto the pre-purchase bandwagon for a couple of games, I've learned my lesson about pre-purchases, buying games in early access that have a high chance of never actually being finished and released and so on).
When it comes to software, I'll admit that many developers have set their pricing far too high and I see a legitimate reason for people to pirate certain products. Adobe is one such company that has ridiculous pricing for their software ($20/mo for Dreamweaver? Pass. I'll keep using Notepad++ for my web development needs). Microsoft themselves charge, imo, far too much for Office (the fact that they have a yearly subscription for it doesn't help either).
While I won't condemn Microsoft for resorting to this as a way to reduce piracy, they did pull a pretty dickish move.
In what regards unauthorized peripherals - I'm not sure what that boils down to. Does it mean you can't use that $2 made-in-china backup mouse or does it simply mean you can't use some cheapo controller that you somehow made Windows to recognize it as an Xbox controller? This can be highly debatable and if Microsoft starts charging manufacturers authorization fees for their hardware everything will go downhill, since extra fees mean extra r&d and production costs that will reflect on the end-user as higher pricing for hardware, and I don't think Microsoft is stupid enough to dig its own hole, build its own coffin and jump into the grave.
This won't really deter me from using Windows 10, but it does arise some concerns regarding the direction Microsoft is heading towards
Woah. I just realized (after posting) that my rant went full wall of text. I'm almost proud of myself of being able to be coherent BEFORE I've had my morning coffee

Meanwhile our government has spent 3 billion dollars on a single website. A single programmer with a wage of 100 an hour would have to work 1600 years on this project to cost this much. And the website is also down every so often.

Not every country. Our government barely knows what a computer is.
I'm not even joking, there currently is no budget (literally NO budget) for cyber security. They said they were going to allocate 10 billion, but it looks like that didn't actually happen.
-
Silent_Xaxal reacted to dalekphalm in The Netherlands will monitor everything...
That seems... well.. incredibly inefficient and backwards. Yes, privacy and checks on police power are important, but what is the officer going to do when he pulls over a vehicle in a routine traffic stop? You can't expect a police officer to get a warrant from a judge every time they stop a vehicle for speeding, or a minor accident, or for driving recklessly.
There's a balance, and I personally feel like that is too far over in the other direction.

I actually agree with it... Abortion should not be allowed unless in particular circumstances(like said above, rape, incest, health).. If you weren't careful enough thats your own fault but there are other options than abortion..
And before you ask.. No, I'm not religious. No I don't like organised religions.
All the above is my opinion only, please don't try strat anything, I'm aware of other peoples views and I respect that they don't conform to mine.

Silent_Xaxal reacted to mr moose in Australia passes a "controversial" law for blocking pirate sites
This has been asked before, do we need a new system? It was especially asked after the 2010 election where government was formed after bargaining between the two major parties and independents. The question was should this happen? and do we need a new system? How ever the problem seemed to be what system would be better.
Should bargaining between elected representatives happen to vote in a party? Should we even have parties? and if not how do we resolve ties and nonuniform policy that conflicts with the public good. We can single out a party and say "you let us down" but we can't effectively single out 74 independents and then try to define how each one let us down.
It also essentially comes down to a catch 22, without parties we have too many chiefs and not enough Indians, but with parties we don't have personal representation in parliament because our local rep has to tow the party line before he can represent his constituents. This is something I have encountered personally in communication with my local member.
If I may offer some advice, ignore most of what your hear, read and see in the news/media and especially don't read/believe what's presented on social sites like FB, reddit and this forum. Listen to what each politician is saying directly and scan for BS. If you are really not comfortable at the booth, it is better to lodge a blank form than to vote for a party you aren't sure you want running the country.
I am signed up for emails from both liberal and labor, yes it's like reading marketing guff, however you know who is putting the spin on it so you know what to look for, unlike other media where we have no idea what information has been left out or why, which makes it much harder to find the truth.
Just my personal opinion, Hopefully it helps.

You know what, I completely agree, but I do still have no doubt in my mind that their needs to be a change in the current Goverment. Because right now, voting is like: "Well this party is bad, but this one is even worse".
EDIT: I actually did a geography report comparing Australia to Zimbabwe and a few other lesser-developed countries like last week btw.
