Trying to decide what charging pad/adapter/case combo to go with. Would there even be a performance increase to have the GPU on a socket as opposed to PCI-E assuming you could fit them all on a mobo?

I assume there's a good reason for it. Right?

If you hadn't have gone with FreeNAS, what other software would you have considered?

I've been using FreeNAS for some time now and I'm considering abandoning it for an alternative server OS. Problems just seem to happen too often for me and fixing them takes hours and hours of online research and trial and error. And on top of that, I often find myself doing even more harm while troubleshooting. And this is extremely bad when my young child wants to watch a movie and I can't make it happen. Now, I very well may just be an idiot, but if that's the case I still need a more idiot-friendly server OS. My needs for the server machine are: - software RAID - file backup - Plex Server hosting Anyone want to sell me on a different OS? Something linux? Windows server? I'm all ears. Specs of the hardware for reference: Pentium G3258 8 GB RAM MSI z87 Mobo 3x 3TB WD Red HDDs

I believe I've undone the last steps I took. But I think there's an issue with your advice: you say to take the MAC address of "the computer". That I have. But that's for the freeNAS machine and that's not really my issue. It's had a static IP all along. Instead, I need a static IP for the plexserver which is not the same IP (or MAC address) as the freeNAS machine itself (even though the plex server is running from the freeNAS machine). But, I was digging around in the webUI for FreeNAS and I did see under the details of the plex jail adjustable fields for IP address and MAC address. I then went into the router and tried to reserve this IP and MAC address but the router told me: "Error converting one or more entries: Only 16 entries allowed for reserving IP address for a specific MAC address. Maximum limit has been reached. Try Again." Is this a limitation on the number of times an individual MAC address can be assigned? If so, can I assign another random MAC address? Or is it that my router can only reserve a limited number of IP addresses?

Edit: OK, I followed this video as best I could and copied all the inputs in the video verbatim with the exception of inputing an IP of 192.168.0.2 instead. That gave me a readout on the freeNAS machine of: "Enter an option from 1-11: Sep 18 15:21:21 freenas kernel: arp: 44:8a:5b:9b:ed:90 is using my IP address 192.168.0.2 on epair0b! Sep 18 15:21:21 freenas kernel: arp: 02:86:00:00:0a:0b attempts to modify permanent entry for 192.168.0.2 on re0" I can't tell whether freeNas is saying it was successful or not. The MAC address it states matches that of the freeNAS machine. The webUI for freeNAS changed to the 192.168.0.2 local IP I put in. The freeNAS machine's MAC address still shows the old 192.168.0.110 in my router though. These seem to contradict each other. Also, reaccessing the freeNAS webUI from another machine tells me the Plexmediaserver service status as "off". Attempting to turn it back on gives me a message of "Some error occurred." Did I just set the freeNAS machine and the Plex server to have the same local IP? Is that even possible? Why doesn't the IP for the freeNAS machine show as 192.168.0.2 in the router if the local IP address used to access the freeNAS webUI has changed?

So, I have a freeNAS machine running Plex. I was able to forward the 32400 port for the Plex Server its running on my Motorola Surfboard SBG6580 modem/router combo (I know, I know, combo modem/router, gross right?). I was initially having problems because I was forwarding from the freeNAS machine's local IP address instead of the plex server's local IP which are apparently different. While that's great that it's working, I'll have to re-forward the port each time the local IP changes if it's not set to be static. I've been able to set every device in the house to a static local IP in my router, but I can't figure out how to do that for the Plex server since its not a physical device with a MAC address but rather a virtual entity created by freeNAS & Plex. The Plex Server's local IP is 192.168.0.2 at the moment and it doesn't show up in my router interface. I've included a pic below. Any thoughts?

So I bought a chromecast. From everything I heard, it would be a simple setup. Unfortunately, I failed to realize beforehand that chromecast only plays nicely with certain routers. Namely, it takes exception to my Motorola SBG6580. My google-fu tells me there are some people who have made it work between these two though. Do any of you good people happen to be among them? Chromecast does ask for a couple things to be done with your router first, like: - Make sure your router is using 2.4GHz range, not 5. (verified) - Add the chromecast's MAC address to your router if MAC filtering is enabled on your router (done) - Disable AP/client isolation (couldn't determine how to do this on my router) - Disable all VPNs on your network (OK, that kinda sucks, but done, guess my kid will never be able to use it will I'm working) - Enable UPnP on your router (done) - Enable IGMP on your router (couldn't determine how to do this on my router) I'm currently receiving an error saying "Something went wrong. Check your network settings and try again" when I attempt to connect the chromecast to my network. Can any of you helpful folks point me in the right direction?

Can I use a raspberry pi as a pfsense machine?

Motorola Surfboard SBG6580, but honestly, I need more than 4 ethernet ports now, so I'll probably need to upgrade to something else. So feel free to throw out your recommendations for that too. Thanks for the help good people.

So I know exactly jack-squat about networking. But its about time I learned because I'm getting frequent IP address conflicts on my home network that my wife looks at me and expects me to just fix instantly. I've got up to 12 devices using the network at any given time (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, & FreeNas platforms). My thought was to utilize some sort of home network software that would allow me to assign every device a static IP address. Does such a thing exist? What would you recommend?

Linus & Luke, feel free to do as many SC benchmarks as you like. If I could just rely on y'all for benchmarks each time a big SC patch/release drops, that would be great.
