  1. I feel sadness now :(. I don't find it worth it to triple the price of my motherboard for a couple of usb-c ports. I will live with the inconveniences and use adapters/hubs until the price comes down i guess.
  2. The usb 4.0 spec was released late 2019, and is almost 4 years old. I wouldn't call that bleeding edge. It's sad to see so many motherboard/case manufacturers skimp on proper usb4 /type c ports, and only the expensive ones have it.
  3. The motherboard is a pretty hard sell at that price, for what is essentially just the added usb-c ports for me. Are there any cheaper motherboards with more than 1 USB-4 type c?
  4. I honestly have no idea. Running those calcs on an overclocked 3470k (4ghz) now, and it is a bit spotty sometimes where it doesn't respond for a while on load and scrolling/flipping pages and visuals needs a good while to load.
  5. Thanks for the detailed reply, it does seem like a good build. Any specific reason to go intel over amd, except for price? I read that the 970 evo's have been dying for many people, not sure i would trust that tbh. If anyone has some info on that, please let me know. The fractal focus 2 case is good in every way but one: the usb-c is only available as an upgrade, is one port and limited to 10Gbps, even though that is advertised as "full speed". Otherwise this case really does seem pretty neat. Will be the new placeholder, if and until something better comes around.
  6. Budget (including currency): +€2000 Country: NL Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming (satisfactory, factorio, cities:skylines, Starfield, call of duty). Occasional data-analyses: visualisation on large datasets (loading multiple (10-20) datasets of 1M+ rows simultaneously) Goal: Gaming-focused build for 1440p 144hz+ gaming at high or ultra settings; Not loud not looking to eek out the last % of DB reduction for exessive prices, but willing to spend a little on noise reduction; /USBCmasterrace - i have one cable for everything, and the more my pc supports that, the better. (think IO/ video in/out etc.) Peripherals only a screen is needed, though not included in the budget, and haven't yet done some research on it. Laptop should be able to connect to it with usb-c dp alt mode; No other peripherals needed and not included in budget. Case plentiful USB-C io is a must; Easy to clean and maintain (dust-filters etc.) Not looking t replicate my cooler master experiences with all the shitty plastic parts; Mid tower. Full tower is too large, mini too small: no build space, uncomfortable maintenance and lesser thermals (but feel free to convince me otherwise). no RGB please Storage Aiming to get more than 4TB. Current hdd/ssd's are broken or have intermittent failures (don't worry, there are backups). is raid an option on a gaming pc to protect against drive failures? The second hand market has excellent offers for last gen items, like a 3090 for 700-800 eur. Open to any suggestions. The budget is a guideline, aiming to get most games running at high settings on 1440p at 144hz. f significant gains can be had for a bit more, i am open to suggestions.
  7. I have a coolermaster HAF X, it seems there are no real replacements for the io. Might as well get a (slightly smaller) case with the latest tricks for airflow and good/replaceable io..
  8. I am not looking to build -now- I can wait. I was hoping to re-use my case and cpu cooler (it is a big dual tower cooler, forgot the brand), but the cooler may not match, and the case has outdated front IO (firewire, but no usb-c for example). can i replace the io on the case or is that going to be a new case? around 1100/1200 isn't that bad, I feared a new pc would go up to 2000 for 1440p/120hz
  9. Budget (including currency): TBD Region: EU Current system CPU: Intel i5 3570K GPU: nvidia 1060 Mobo: asrock z77 extreme4 Ram: 16GB DDR3 PSU: 650 watt background: Currently my cpu is bottlenecking a whole lot of games. Current problems are microstutters, fuzzy graphics (staticy looking, especialy on foliage), and generally sinking fps for recent titles. Also getting constant beepcodes (1 long, 2 long or 3 long) that indicate memory issues, but no test i have done shown any errors, and reseating/switching ram gave the same result. The system is old (10+ years) and i haven't built a system in as much time. Running everything on max. 60fps on an older 1080p monitor - which may or may not be replaced depending on what can be salvaged an whether i should adjust my goals. Goal Looking to be ably to play on higher fps than before (120? trying to hit a sweetspot), on a slightly higher resolution (1440p). on triple A titles (let's take warzone and the upcoming mw2 as a guideline). All the peripherals are here, besides the monitor. No special requirements otherwise. Questions - What pricepoint should i think of, based on my goal? - Is it worth salvaging anything from the old system? - To save money, would it be better to aim for lower fps or lower resolution? - I prefer going amd over nvidia, as i will likely move to linux in the (near) future and nvidia has always been a pain for me. - Did i forget anything? NB: not looking for rgb, fancy colour schemes or anything like that. Performance over form.
  10. Video (series) idea: Basic security and privacy online. You could cover: passwords (password management), 2fa (sms, otp and hardware), privacy problems & settings, custom roms (? maybe too technical for most, although some are easier than others), browser choices- and extensions, wifi-security, bluetooth security, commonly used tools, such as VPN's, DNS (custom, pi-hole, DoH, DoT), and most importantly: online behaviour (though risks can be mitigated with technical solutions. A lot of these things are hard to find good, popular videos on aimed at less tech-savvy users. Some of these tools are advertised as end-all and be all of security, with comment-sections filled with comments such as: such as "just use x" or "if you don't run arch in 6 VM's it is never gonna be secure so whatever". <- that sort of thing is discouraging people, and we need some encouragement.
  11. sorry about that. I didn't realize it was moved, and thought I posted in the wrong place. Also, shouldn't this be in general? as it is not about vpn apps itself, but its advertising?
  12. Hello everyone, For a while it has been bothering me to see creators whose content i enjoy promote VPN's as magical tool that will "make you anonymous", and "hide your internet traffic" (without specifying), and as the only option to "protect you online"(whatever that means). A VPN definitely has a place as a tool for improving security and/or privacy, but the use case for it is usually much more narrow. It doesn't make you anonymous, and while your ISP may not be able to see the traffic, the VPN and the website/service that you are visiting will. The more problematic thing with this advertisement, is that people will go out and get a VPN thinking it will do all of those things and "make them secure", slacking on more important security (and privacy) enhancements that they need. An example of better advertising i found on one of MKBHD's video's, where he talks about returning choice to the consumer in areas where you only have one ISP. My hope is that this issue can finally be addressed in an accessible way, demistifying all of the jargon that usually gets thrown your way, and dispelling bullshit terms like "military grade (encryption)" and the like. Sure, this has been done by other content creators - but those generally focused on an already tech-savvy audience. Furthermore, there are still large tech-youtubers who advertise VPN's in a rather questionable way every day, and this is not a problem that is going away anytime soon. I wonder what LTT's stance on this is and what other people think about this issue. Please let me know. Sidenote: currently there are great tools out there for improving your security and privacy online that do not involve a VPN. Problem is, - much like using linux - that most of them are out of reach for most users, because they require a lot of tehnical knowledge and the user experience is generally not great. There are some really great ones too, but those are certainly the minority. Also would love to see LTT covering more of the privacy and security issues, such as password managers, 2fa, general attack vectors (phishing, scams etc.), online tracking (cookies, trackers, apps, permissions etc.). I trust you would do a good job of doing this in an accessible way for non tech-savvy folks.

  14. Hello everyone, I am currently running a Nextcloud server on my rpi 4 (model B). Storage space is running out on my SD card however, and performance/ and durability isn't great compared to an SSD. Therefore, i want to extend the storage space with an external (USB) SSD. However, powerdraw over USB for a pi 4 is capped at 1.2A. I had my eye set on a rugged LACIE SSD (great value/money), but it probably draws more power and won't work with the pi. The way i see it, there are 3 solutions: 1. find a power efficient SSD that draws under 1.2A 2. get an SSD with its own psu 3. Get a powered USB hub. 1. seems unlikely, 2 is difficult to find (good suggestions?), and it seems that 3. has some compatibility issues. Thoughts? suggestions? ideas?
  15. Thanks for all the replies everyone! Good idea on the donating front, since it is probably still capable of basic office tasks. I would really rather donate it to an individual than an institution though. If any of you know someone in the Netherlands who really needs a pc for work/school, let me know (long shot, but who knows). In the meantime, i'll see if I can find someone as well.
