  1. So I’m having some issues with a backup drive cluster I’ve created It consists of 3x500gb WD Blue hardrives in data parity mode using Windows 10 Manage Storage Spaces Now the drives work fine, no quibble, all data integrity is fine, I have done every check I know, CHKDSK, diskdrive check status actual hardrive checkers, all fine But upon boot a completely random drive out of the 3 will fail its SMART validation and say it is about to die. But then as soon as windows is open will not have a single problem to find and will pass all tests What on earth could this be, as I’m at a loss
  2. Perfect, I’ll keep that in mind, Thank you again, you’ve been amazing for the help with this
  3. You know what, I think I’ll take your advice on that and hold off for a little bit, as that sounds lethal without an actual protected trip switch for it Think I’ll stick to 1 or 2 duff £30 cheap nodes off eBay then for the mean time and not put anything too powerful in it, then if it explodes I’m not crying. Thank you for that as you may have single handedly saved me hundreds there. This was never meant to be too major, i buy these like a normal person would buy project cars. I learn how to work on them, get them going, then either sell them or have fun with them and run them until they die again.
  4. Oh sorry forgot to tag you in it or whatever you call it on here, posted the horrors of my tiny cluster under the bed Got a with a normal R910 with a toolbox ontop too
  5. Also to prove about the noise an power thing, this is a load being applied to the opterons. Also yea they are on carpet, but I only buy these things when they are gonna be sent to a scrap heap or melted down anyway. So if they live they live. IMG_7960.MOV
  6. Well I’m afraid there’s none of that, I’m not joking when I say I sleep with 4 fully functioning quad opteron based servers under my bed that when running make over 100db easily I don’t doubt. However I will add, these are personal use, so when I’m not using them, they go off to save my sanity. And I’m afraid the goal is to learn how these things work, same as with every other orphan creation I make, for example the toaster pc in my profile pic. Ideally I would like to integrate it into my home network as a Beyerwolf cluster and just for shared render stuff, but nothing serious really. The goal for the end of 2023 is to make a program using RedHat to intergrate a fast multi platform system solution into an easy to control ui The M620 is out the window then and I’ll just keep waiting up on the M910 blades, just a nightmare to find. And yeah that would make sense why they did, as they are units and allot of people don’t have the space, time or money for them. But again don’t think I’m gonna run it constantly. No solar but got decent enough pockets to power as and when, however even if it’s bad I’m not here allot so when I am I turn all the units on. Also heat wise I’m used to the room running 34C+ so it’s not that awful, but dust wise it’s going to be a constant struggle Honestly, Thank you for the help, but more importantly the warning, to say buyers remorse is hitting is an understatement, but I’m gonna make it go where I can
  7. So having a spot of bother specking out my M1000e and was wondering if there may anyone who can help a. The M620 blades say they can fit FCLGA2011, so would they be compatible with E7-8880v3’s which Intel say are also FCLGA2011, or is that not possible b. Is the server compatible with multiple types of blades at once, e.g. 4xM620’s, 2xM610’s, 1xM820 & 1x M910 c. If anyone knows, roughly how efficient are the 2360w PSU’s, as honestly don’t think I need all 6 (nor can I supply that much) d. Is there any good videos you would recommend for how the remote management tools work e. Any recommendations for blades that can fit a Grid K1 or K2 in? As would love to work with some Irrelevant information: I have never worked on a blade server before, I only bought it because it was cheap. Picked it up with every card, switch, PSU and extra in the back for £100, all working, then when the 2 pallets arrived realised what I got myself into. Any help is appreciated as I’m out of my depth XD
  8. So I’m alive, and this is what I have done in my time off the site:

    Servers:

    4x opteron 6380 x4

    1x opteron 6372 x4

    1x xeon E8880 x2 + 2 Tesla K40

    1x xeon 7750x x2

    1x xeon single core (2003 era) x2

And an M1000e with no nodes

    Main PC’s:

    7700k, 2x 980ti’s

    7400k, 1050ti (on loan)

    FX4350, R7 260x (going on loan soon)

3770, 550ti (once upgraded going out on loan)

    Main Laptop:

    12700, 3060

And many more old projects you may have heard of on here and other other sites are ‘loaned’ out in the homes of those who need to game this Christmas

For once I’m ‘on top’ of my hoarding and after building over 5pc’s of various specs out of random stuff I’ve been given over the years or bought from job lots on eBay. I’ve put them to work for gamers in need, wether it’s a temp replacement for a dead machine, water cooled calamity or just someone who can’t afford it or has been scammed into a GT610 on eBay, I’ve been sharing the love to those who need it most.

With a few more GPU’s on the side, a 980, 1060ti, 770 and others I’ve still got a bit to go, however sourcing decent cheap parts is hard. My main struggle is PSU’s right now, so any help on where I can find 80+ Psu’s with dual 2+6 cables included is appreciated.

Other than that, trying to set up a Beowulf cluster on Red hat 6 or 7 but project is such an uphill curve that I’m not sure I’m even in the right ballpark for what I’m doing (again any help is appreciated)

Final Hardware project was a fibre ring network using 8 old emulex cards, had it simplified working on windows but now the ‘cluster’ is in disarray so I’m not even touching it with a barge pole. Instead sticking to 3 Ethernet switches with a hint of putty until I get it sorted.

These are on a pretty big sale right now. Non modular, but tier B in the newer cultist's PSU list.

      And here's a tier C 550W for a little bit less.

I know not probably what you’re looking for but that’s the best HP I can find for your budget however I believe it’s worth going into a shop and seeing wether a 13” is big enough for your needs as the smaller screens can be more straining on your eyes in my experience. If you think it’s okay then I’d probably chase that one further as it’s a better cpu If not, if you’re British I find it can sometimes be worth a quick nip into curry’s/pc world as they’ll sometimes sell off some good PC’s at a cheaper price if they’re older stock.
  10. I’d agree with darkseth, 250 nitts is a tad low so you may have to clean it more often and may be difficult to see outdoors, aswell the batteries on both must be taken into consideration for how much you’d use it intensively the more expensive one is nice, but again for lighter work loads it should be okay, but it’s integrated graphics may take a little longer if you’re rendering and such Overall I think you could get away with the cheaper one in allot of cases but for those you can’t you could always use cloud rendering or something to help you out so there’s always another way if you find out it’s not enough later
  11. Although I’ve never bought from them, I would say go for it, but use PayPal to pay as they seem very good at refunding if you’ve been scammed for stuff like this. Best of luck!
  12. I like these, however if you’re in an engineering course that requires 3D Modeling such as AutoCAD or Solidworks you may require something with a bit more of a hefty gpu they look sleek though, maybe a HP Omen would be the best of both worlds? If it’s just for compiling code however and low level applications like word these will be more than good enough
  13. I’m not fully sure what could be causing this. Simple things to try are updating your OS and Apps to see if that mitigates crashing. However could be a firmware issue, so may be worth checking drivers are in date and maybe even updating bios. Also may be to do with the PC’s sleep state, as there’s many different types, however not fully sure.
  14. You can go into and set folders in steam itself, make sure they are still set to the right location for the games causing issues however CANT imagine it’s good for performance
  15. Like anything if you get too low it will damage the card or the system may not even boot but for 10C I see no problems and you’d have to check with the manufacturer if your exact tech can run in those temps
  16. Yeah, gpu will be fine, I’d say best step is to follow a tutorial on YouTube on how to use DDU to uninstall drivers, then reinstall all new stable drivers and see if crashes remain
  17. Gpu OC can often be done using the software that comes with the card but if you don’t know how to do it you won’t have done it before so don’t worry about that step
  18. Yeah that’s 95%+ chance it’s not a PSU issue, that’s the process of removing all existing drivers and putting the pc to a base state to make sure nothing from the old drivers is conflicting
  19. That psu sounds up to the job in all honesty so I can’t imagine it’s that I think some are having problems with 3000 series crashing on unreal and certain game engines right now however it’s out of my area of expertise to diagnose software issues to that level For all I know it could even end up being like some of the early AMD400 series gpu’s that got recalled for high power spikes. However my diagnosis wouldn’t be the psu in this case. Try lowering the clock speed of RAM and make sure no OC is running on 3070ti as that’s been a problem I’ve encountered in the passed from a different system. Then if it still happens I’m afraid that’s beyond my expertise Best of luck!!
  20. Personally rocked a Linksy BT Adaptor and a TP link 150mb/s wifi Adaptor for years. you’ll get higher ping than intergrated but it’ll still work just remember when you first plug it in to get drivers you’ll either need to plug in by router until drivers are downloaded or download drivers from a dvd
  21. As much as it could be a simple driver issue I’d reckon it may even be an issue with ram speed even or as you reckon psu I don’t think a 700w would struggle with a 3070ti but would like to know what PSU you actually have
  22. So I’m updating some of my setups and need some help for the PSU’s as one is a quite niche machine Build 1: 7700k 3 way 980 sli couple of smaller drawers Just a normal gaming rig, suggestions are appreciated Build 2: 3770k And I have 4x 570’s spare and was wondering how many a cpu like this could handle and if so what kind of psu I’d need. Also this build has allot of odd-ware as in 5+ 5.25” tech, pci-e cards, random hdd’s and ssd’s an absolute Frankenstein so extra molex’s without the splitters would be appreciated. It’s used mostly to swap in random hardware for testing so I’d need a robust PSU that can handle a weird load Any help is very appreciated as I’m out of my depth for a build like that.
  23. I personally wouldn’t have thought it was the gpu anyway If I were you to make 100% sure it isn’t a hardware issue, just take out the hdd totally to check it boots at all then it removes either a hardware or windows install issue It could black screen for all sorts of reasons (ie memory clock unexpected ect), however I haven’t worked with any non-igpu CPU’s yet so I don’t fully know the protocol there on what to do if it doesn’t detect the gpu anymore
  24. Well depending on the monitor, however if it is modern it should automatically detect the resolution Ive found some resolutions and refresh rates supported by the card here, they’re a tad old school, so it’s very possibly your monitor is having some trouble working out what it has to do if it’s too new and doesn’t support much lower size’s and refresh rates http://vgamuseum.info/images/doc/cirrus/cl-gd5446technical.pdf And although I will be here and there with the job, I would happily give away some parts if you’d pay shipping i have a spare AGP gpu you could use (once tested as hasn’t been used in 2 years) and I also have a shed load of spare ram for it even though you’ve pretty much maxed it for that age plus any other bits I could look around for as may not be directly in view, but have some non-runners that I could salvage from
  25. Honestly had enough grief with VM’s in the passed (forgetting to enable access to ports) and just want something to work ‘easy’ at the moment (and have a shed load of erased 120gb ssd’s) so will start the install now And tbh the CPU isn’t the best in this old dog I’m doing it on so a VM is just more stress than the PC and I can handle But thank you so much and for the next few hours I’ll try your method, you’ve been a huge help and have Saved my Sanity today
