I unsubbed from GN a long time ago and agree with much of the criticism here. He seemed like the type of guy with a superiority complex obliged to give the final word on everything. He always seemed bored, exasperated, and amused by new products that don't meet his standards. Like if a new cpu wasn't a big enough improvement over last gen's then the engineers who made it are idiots; moreover, you're an idiot for even considering to buy one.

In all fairness I think a lot of tech reviewers are guilty of trying to make themselves look smart and important by pooping all over a big company's new product. GN just seems like the type of guy who'd be really hard to work with or be friends with irl.

mwagen reacted to Gorgon in Time to upgrade my router?
The e2500 should handle 200Mbps, It maxes out at 300Mbps per channel but you'll likely never get the full 300Mbps.

Run a speedtest from a wired connection (they're only Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) though) and compare it to a speedtest from a Wireless Connection. From the wired connection you should be able to get almost the full 100Mbps. If not then there's likely an issue with the ISP.

The only other reason for an upgrades would be:
to get newer technology (ac, WiFi 5, 6 etc.) and MIMO technology but with only a 200Mbps service you'll likely only see the increased throughput on internal connections. If that model has any un-patched vulnerabilities, it's pretty old at this point but there was a firmware update as recent as this May. Remember that older Wireless Routers such as this one act as a "Hub" rather than a "Switch" and in most cases and can only process one request at a time and will go at the speed to best support the slowest device connected. So if you have a device on your network that is struggling due to distance or poor signal strength it can drag everything else down.

I'm a car guy and have been driving almost exclusively manual transmission cars for 20 years. It is a lot of fun having complete control over the engine's rev range and executing a perfect upshift on hard acceleration feels really good (though I've never bothered to master heel-toe downshifts..). Driving a manual is so second nature to me now that I think I'd miss the fun that comes with that control more than I would appreciate the convenience of automatic gear changes.
I'm from Michigan and no way would I go without ABS. There's really no substitute for being able to slam on the brakes without them locking up and spinning out of control.

mwagen reacted to YoungBlade in Self driving cars are technologically impressive but are a poor solution.
I've never understood the mindset that somehow we either have to all have cars or all cars have to go. Humans can, in fact, specialize based on the environments we find ourselves in.

At least in the US, people who live in the suburbs or rural areas need a car. People who live in cities do not. That's actually okay.

Have you ever lived in suburban or rural America? I would guess not based on the way you talk about cars.

With all due respect, having a car is amazing and, for a comfortable life here, necessary.

I can just go get groceries when I need to. No dealing with bus schedules or worrying about whether I can carry my groceries for several blocks without my arms giving out or the bags breaking. Not that there are any buses in my town anyway, but even if they existed, it would suck in comparison.

My car costs me about $400 a month all together. An Uber ride runs $15+ around here. Since I work full time, it would cost me a minimum of $30 a day, 25 days a month, to just go to work. I come out way ahead with my car. Not to mention, I'm in control, and not relying on a stranger to get me to work on time.

It's also essential for longer trips. I can go visit a friend on the other side of the state without wasting hours just waiting for the next train or bus to arrive at the connecting station. I once considered taking the bus because my old car was getting unreliable, but I didn't bother, because it would have taken literally the entire day, dawn to dusk, 15+ hours, just to get there, instead of 2.5 hours.

If you truly dont need a car, that's great. You're probably saving a lot of money. However, I don't have that option where I live, because the alternatives either non-existent, more expensive, or endlessly less convenient.

TL;DR - Where you live is not the whole world. Some people need cars, others don't. Don't go dumping on "car culture" just because you don't understand the needs of people in other places.

It's fair, I think Intel can push out quite a number of chips, and the adoption rate of the new cards probably won't be as high as for each new generation of Nvidia or AMD.

As a side note, I think Intel chose a near-perfect time to release their GPUs because amid the despair due to shortages people will be forced to buy them, especially since usually overpriced Intel products will appear cheap next to 2000-dollar 3080s.

Not shilling for newegg, just shared my experiences with them (good and bad) 🤷‍♂️. Of course you're entitled to express whatever you want, I just don't think in this case you're justified in bashing a company over what I feel is a minor thing, so I'm calling that out. Over the last 15+ years I've bought and sold hundreds of things online from a single bolt to an entire car. I imagine you have, too. And guess what? Sometimes shit happens, and dealing with a situation like yours, aka "waiting," is nothing in my book. The fact that you're ~10 years older than me and reacted by whining about it online doesn't seem like normal behavior for a well-adjusted adult. Kinda reveals you as the "Karen" type.

Yeah, we get it, but I think you're making a mountain out of a mole hill. The only cost to you is having to wait a bit longer. Was this really worth starting a thread about? I don't know how old you are, but if this is how you're going to react when things in life don't always work out how you expect then I feel sorry for anybody who has to deal your attitude. Things like this happen all the time, so my suggestion is to learn to be calm about stuff like this because ultimately no harm has been done.

So were you charged more for shipping? Or are you just complaining that you have to wait a few extra days? 🙄 Maybe somebody made a packing mistake and forgot the RAM so they had no other choice but to ship it separately. Shit happens, get over it.

Never had a problem with newegg, always been quick to handle any issues I've had, but they've always packed their boxes all wrong. For example if I buy a CPU they'll ship it in an oversized box with the CPU tight to one corner with packing material taking up the rest of the box. Been lucky so far that nothing has been damaged.

I get the fruatration, but you were being a total Karen there. I used to work customer service for a major telecom and if something is out of stock, there is literally nothing a CSR can do about that.

Now personally, I wouldn't have offered you the $10 because it comes off as condescending. Had an issue with a Prime Day order with the cart and lost out hundreds of savings. Called CS and got offered a similar $10 gift card. That actually made me more angry and I declined before hanging up on them.

Not saying you're not allowed to be angry. I 100% get where you are coming from. But as someone who has done support for half a decade, you see things from both sides. First rep was doing standard protocol and in all honestly, may not have even been a tech enthusiast to know how scarce those GPUs are. The second also didn't do anything wrong. I've experienced atrocious support before and that is not what you posted. This boils down to a first world problem and taking out anger on people just doing their job.

I have to defend Newegg here. If they don't have the item in question, a refund really is the only thing they CAN do. Do you want to have them build a GPU out of clay? They are not a manufacturer, they are just a middle-person. And it seems they processed the RMA with no hassle.

Only real complaint is that it seems to have been an open box or something. Be glad they didn't force you to buy their Gigabyte PSU along with your shuffle.

I agree with banning or requiring the reduction of use of some plastics.
It really annoys me to see a thick plastic jug for a 2 liter bottle of plastic ... nobody's gonna recycle that jug. We used to have 1 liter plastic foil bags of milk, now we have carton (tetrapack style) boxes, and lately I've seen they started to do plastic jugs here.

A lot of products use plastic instead of glass simply because it's better for the company : less broken items during shipping, slightly lighter packaging compared to glass, easier to stack product in warehouses (because more weight can sit on a pallet without breaking or cracking, more resistant to accidental drops (so less cleaning on isles in supermarket etc)

The tetrapack packages are not as recyclable as they claim to be ... remember they're basically a sandwich of cardboard, aluminum and plastic foil ... so a recycling company would need a specialized machine to separate the layers and who's gonna build up enough of a shippment of recycled tetrapack boxes to run through that machine and recover his investment in such a machine?

But there's lots of products with excessive plastic packaging simply to make the products harder to steal off the shelves or to make the product more visible (ex pack of 5 razor heads in a plastic case that can hold 10 or 12 razors, simply because the bigger packaging looks better on shelves or can't be easily pocketed.

Another good example is those packs of liquid detergent capsules ... it's not just excessive plastic packaging (for the bucket) but also the space used in shipping and amount used on shelves and so on ... see on the right:

Few people are gonna recycle the plastic bottle and this product doesn't even need it. They could have easily do with a Pringles type can or a tetrapak or another type of cardboard box.

The pods are also waste of space, and hard to stack and so they use way more space then needed in the pack.

Seriously they could put those 3 separate liquids into separate capsules in a blister like you see medicine sold and simply say on the packaging "Pop one of each color"and throw the set in the washing machine with every load."
The blisters could be in plain cardboard packaging you could easily recycle.
You could even skip the blisters, you could bundle them like chewing gum,

But ... they make it big on purpose to be visible on shelves and to make it seem like worth the money.

I've always been an advocate for being able to use ones PC any way they see fit.
However, there is a distinct difference between using something for its intended purpose, and not, especially when it comes at the expense of other people. When that happens, it is certainly necessary and usual for said 'thing / 'product' to be separated into 2 distinct items, one for the intended purpose and one for the other purpose.

An example in the UK, im sure the US has something similar, is Red Diesel.
Red Diesel is essentially the same as normal Diesel, its just Dyed Red, its only used in farm vehicles and some construction equipment. Red Diesel has a very low Tax Duty rate.
Initially farm vehicles used normal diesel that was simply cheaper due to less Duty cost, however this caused 'normal' people to buy said diesel under the guise of using it for farm equipment, and/or otherwise 'acquire' it and use it for their every day car and ofc for resale. This ofc caused a problem, so they solution was to Dye the Diesel red, anyone caught using it in a regular vehicle is subject to penalties.

So in this instance, the 'cheap' Diesel is the GPU, intended primarily for farmers to use so they can affordably ..farm. However, the average joe started to realize they could save some money and avoid Taxes by buying / acquiring said Diesel to use in their every day vehicle and worse still acquire it to resell, they are the Crypto Miners.
The solution, Dye the Diesel Red to differentiate between the almost Duty free Diesel and 'normal Diesel' making it very easy to find and fine those who use the 'cheap' Diesel outside its intended use. This is Nividia adding the limiters to the GPUs.

The average joe isnt going to be harmed here. Most people are not going to be crypto mining with a single GPU, its hardly worth it afterall. By the time you have enough GPU power for it to be worth it, ur well within being a 'miner' territory, and thus are causing an problem for other people.

This is a slippery slope however, so its well worth consumer keeping a close eye on things.

That's not much of an argument though.

Just because you can use a product for a purpose other than intended, does not mean the manufacturer has to oblige in perpetuity. They are not only taking a PR hit for the limited manufacturing capability in the face of the high demand, they are also tied to the pricing, regardless that they aren't the cause of it.

Altering their products to account for the new landscape of GPU usage, they are trying to address the issues. They can reclaim gaming cards for their original purpose, and add compute versions for people interested in mining. Perhaps they might still offer dual-purpose, but it might come with a price premium to account for the obvious issues with that.
