It's not a supply problem, Nvidia is selling a ton of gpus and higher end ones than they normally would. It's a demand problem because mining is profitable. PS5 is awesome, it completely destroys my 1660 Super and has better exclusives IMO.

I got kind of sick of PC gaming even before the current crypto boom with how expensive Turing was after the crypto boom of 2018 showed Nvidia they could significantly raise prices from what they were with Pascal, which were already quite a bit higher than they were with Maxwell. I miss when you could get GTX 970 as a light cut down from the king of the hill gpu for $330 and get double the performance of console. Felt like I was getting hosed paying $230 for my GTX 1660 Super which really should have been a 50 series card in the Turing stack, but my 970 died on me and I needed something and didn't feel like spending $500 on a 2070 Super.

Another strike is how expensive motherboards have gotten. Can't believe I saw a new crap H610 board with only 2 DIMMS and no VRM cooling have a leaked MSRP of $120 and B660 with half ass VRM cooling going for $160 when I got my Z97 board with SLI support for $85 back in 2015. Getting to the point where I may just upgrade my PC mostly for emulation and get an Alder Lake i3 just for the high single core performance. No more doing builds targeting AAA gaming for me until PC starts showing some value again with respect to console.

I love my PS5, got it about a year ago. I have an RTX 3060 and a 10700k in my PC for reference.

I bought it because my GF and I love the PlayStation exclusives, I was planning to wait until they were readily available, but I snagged one at MSRP.

Well, fast forward and I didn't use my PC for gaming at all in December. Not once. I had two weeks off over the holidays, I played Spiderman, she played Demon Souls/Bloodborne a bit, we played COD together. (Still have my PS4 pro for co-op/multiplayer sessions)

If I'm sightseeing in a game, I want to use my PS5 because it's hooked up to an OLED. The games I still want to play are Returnal, Ratchet and Clank, ect. More PS exclusives.

At this point, for me, PC gaming is basically reserved for emulation, VR, and competitive games. And even competitive games like COD I end up playing on PS5 because my OLED is at 120hz is more responsive than my 240Hz monitor.

I'll have an itch for CS:GO, Rust, or whatever else at some point. But as of late, my GPU has only been running NiceHash to offset the ridiculous cost. lol

The WesternDigital SN750 is the one to get (the second link I believe). Go for a 1TB to have additional room for games that absolutely need an SSD, Newegg had good deals last I checked.

The SN750 is dramatically better than the other two options, and is also much better than the SN550.

If opting for an ADATA SSD, the XPG SX8200 Pro is the one to get, not the one you linked.

I'd upgrade that PSU before 3080, they recommend 750 but some reviewers have said that its a pretty accuration requirement. Personally I'd go for 850 for the overhead

RaphaNadal reacted to CommanderAlex in 750 W PSU for 6800XT asking for 850 W?
There is a probability of being more for different versions of cards with custom BIOSs and adjusted voltages to boost the core clock speeds higher, thus requiring higher wattage PSUs due to higher loads on custom BIOS cards, not really so for against lower-quality PSUs.
That seems plenty reasonable for the maximum PSU efficiencies, but more like 50-70% peak.

Overall, your system should be fine with that PSU unless you are doing custom water cooling and multiple RGB lighting strips/"glitter".

My system is extremely similar to yours, but I have an RTX 3080, which uses even more power.

I have an EVGA 750-watt Gold PSU, and according to my APC UPS, at "peak" my system is sucking down about 500-watts. 450-watts is normal for most gaming sessions.

The PSU you listed should be fine.

First build in 8 years. I got back into video games during the pandemic by upgrading the GPU and SSD on my old i5-2400 to play Cities: Skylines.

However it still was no longer running the games I wanted to play, so I upgraded to a Ryzen-based build. Still waiting for new batch of GPUs to come out before I upgrade my GPU:

I've been playing Control, Cities: Skylines and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. My purchase of a 3700X also got me a free copy of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. Looking forward to getting Witcher 3 soon.

I am not too bummed about missing out on Zen 3, this rig should last me 4 years with a Radeon 6700XT\RTX 3060 Ti.
Did I end up spending a bit more than I should have? Yes. I guess I learned a lesson about future PC upgrades.

Future Upgrades: PSU with all-black cables, and GPU to support 1440p 144 Hz video games.
I will likely go for a semi-modular 80+ Bronze 650 W unit at the least, depending on what AMD\NVidia GPU I buy next year. Maybe a PCIE Gen 4 NVME SSD too when prices are more realistic.

As for my old i5-2400 build, I will re-assemble it and donate it to someone.

B550 motherboards are actually plenty capable to power the highest-end Zen 3 parts. They are way overbuilt compared to B450, on average.

Something like a GIgabyte Aorus Pro (if you OC)\Aorus Elite (if you don't OC)\ASRock Steel Legend\ASUS ROG Strix-E\MSI Tomahawk would work amazing, if you have a B350-series AMD chipset or older.

It makes little sense to release a 600-series motherboard just for AM4 socket to support Zen 3, and confusing if the same chipset were to support both AM4 (for Zen 3) and AM5 (for Zen3+ and other future CPUs). I'm curious to see what happens.

Especially when looking at a lower quality 1000W unit to get to that wattage they don't need when a lower wattage better quality unit would be a MUCH better choice.

Better go for Zen 3 than the first gen of AM5 IMHO. AM5 will bring DDR5 along with it, and its likely that such hardware changes won't be smooth initially. DDR5 RAM will be the first time that RAM can be read and written at the same time.

Hard to say how much performance you're losing by sticking with your 4690K, but the difference is not trivial compared with Zen 3 or 10900K.

I would say - upgrade CPU\Motherboard\RAM, see if your GPU holds up for the games you play, and then upgrade GPU at a later date.

I suggest go for 8 core Zen 3 CPU rather than 6 core Zen 3 CPU, as new consoles from Sony and Microsoft  coming out this year are 8-core AMD parts.

I would expect newer games to be optimized for 8-core in the next 4-5 years, which is an expected life for an 8-core part like 3700X, or it’s Zen 3 counterpart.

$129 for the 750W Leadex III sounds fair. I'd say it's definitely worth the extra $5 over the Focus GM.
Some other solid options at (usually) around the same price would be the Corsair RM750x, Fractal Design Ion+ 760W and be quiet! Straight Power 11 Gold 750W.

Can't comment on RDNA2 since we've barely got any information on those cards, but you could power a system with a 3700X and 3080 (if Nvidia's 320W power draw figure is to be believed), you could run that system with a good 550W PSU, let alone 650 or 750 watts.
So yes, you'd be fine with 650W.

For upgradability, add 32 GB of RAM to that list.  Some games are getting awfully close to using 16GB, and some games like Flight Simulator and Galactic Civilizations recommend 32GB already.  That list will only grow.

Liking the build, and I respect the 1650 Ti while waiting for new GPUs.  You can prob sell it too and recoup some of the cost.  No benchmarks out yet, but you might even be able to get away with a 3070 instead of a 3060 Ti since your 3700X shouldn't bottleneck either of those GPUs.  Also 1440p at 144Hz is glorious (that's what I have too), definitely gets the job done

I run R7 3700X on B550 Gigabyte Aorus Pro, and the 3600 MHz RAM is causing the system to go into a boot loop. I didn't have this issue with 3200 MHz RAM.

Limited run of Memtest is revealing zero issues (21\21 tests passed). I'm willing to let Memtest run for 7-8 hours overnight, but I think the RAM itself is fine, it's just not compatible with R7 3700X\B550 Aorus Pro combination.
