  1. Just wanted to see if anyone ever had issues with the memory controller on XEON 5000 series processors. Specifically the X5660 model. I have a Z600 and when I upgraded the CPU's from E5606 to X5660 it gave me 203-204 errors. I first through it was the mother board, but when I do swap outs the errors duplicate on both boards. And when I put the E5606 back in the memory modules. Now I have two X5660 and one shows up and posts fine, but the other shows memory ERR on all three channels. On this CPU I noticed the indents on the pads much deeper then the ones working. I was wondering if fixing or applying a little more pressure would maybe get it to work, or if their was any remedies people found. If not I'll simply go back to my old set until I can find another CPU set to try and upgrade to. Note: I have tried two motherboards, 2 different sets of RAM (both ECC and non-ECC) and its always the same errors on the same CPU regardless of board or slot. Cheers. Allan
  2. Got into computers as a hobby 6 months ago. I bought a HP Z600 (version 2 motherboard) with the intent to edit at 1080p. Well it was a little under powered so I wanted to upgrade some elements like an SSD, GPU CPU etc.. I thought 12 gb of ram was fine and it was OK. But recently I took apart the computer to clean and repaste the cpu (don't think its been changed since 2010). First things: My config for ram was 6x2gb. When I took the ram out 2 sticks was ECC ram and 4 was 10600U ram (meant for regular computers). They all worked and i had 12 gbs. Unfortunately one of the modules decided to start failing when i put everything back together. It gives me a 203 and 209 error on DIMM 3 CPU0 when booted and I have to press F1 to boot. Then it says in computer properties 12 gb of ram but only 10 gb useable. THIS IS THE PART THAT SHOULDN'T WORK BUT DOES. My friend gave me 4 sticks of this Samsung ram https://www.techpowerup.com/review/samsung-mv-3v4g3/ SPEED RATING: DDR3-1600 (PC3 12800) RATED TIMINGS: 11-11-11-28 CAPACITY: 8GB (4 GB x2) TESTED VOLTAGE: 1.35 V PCB TYPE: 6 Layers REGISTERED/UNBUFFERED: Unbuffered ERROR CHECKING: Non-ECC FORM FACTOR: 240-pin DIMM WARRANTY: Lifetime I plugged it into the correct 4 of the slots that do work (DIMM 1/2 on both cpu's) Dimm 3 on cpu 0 is the one broke. And the works perfectly fine, fastest scrubs and playback in Davinci I have ever had. Shows all usable in windows (but it does show its speed at 1600 but in the BIOS it shows it at the max speed of the cpu 1333) why is that!?!? But everywhere I read it says Non-ECC ram shouldn't work in this system!? Why!?!?!
  3. I purchased old Z600 (dual processor configuration) and it worked perfect for a good month. Then when I had a chance I removed the ram/cpu for a general cleaning / repasting. When I put it back together it gave me a 203 and 209 error about the DIMM 3 failing and now it only reports 10 gb of ram usable out of 12 (6x2gb config). I have done all physical trouble shooting I could do like cleaning/checking connections. Most likely a trace is gone, but is their anything I can do otherwise? Through BIOS or software? I think its important to know the RAM configuration was messed up and I didn't notice until I removed the ram. It had in it: 2 sticks of OEM ECC ram 4 sticks of 3rd party NON-ECC RAM I forget the order they were put in and the order I put them back in might of been different, but for trouble shooting I tried different modules in different slots and configurations and still only DIMM 3 on one CPU is a lame duck. Didn't think that was suppose to work but it did (and quite well tbh). If it doesn't work out I am just going to upgrade to 16 4x4 and use 4 channels instead of 6 *** I use this computer for hobbyist 1080 video editing ***
  4. My Z600 currently has two 5506 (80watt, 4C/4T, 2.13 GHZ) and I want to upgrade to two 5660 (95w 6C/12T 2.8ghz (3.2ghz turbo). Do I have to worry about getting bigger fans? Or is the stock ones for a Z600 fine?
  5. Hello people, I bought a HP z600 (version) to get into the hobby of understanding computers/computer building! Thought it be fun to work with offbeat CPU stuff. What I noticed is RAM and XEON CPU refurbished is especially cheap on eBay. I have been using this webpage as a base to make my upgrade decisions: https://www.greenpcgamers.com/technology/hp-z600-v2-gaming-computer-and-other-hardware-upgrades/ When I bought it, it came with: 2x Xeon 5506 2.13ghz. 6x 2GB of RAM 1333mhz. (8 ECC & 4 reg Ram) Quadro 4800 I've already upgraded the GPU to a GTX 970 and am running the OS off of a SSD. But I see some XEON chips that are much better for $20-$40 a chip and the nicest ones $100+ per chip) on eBay.ca Ram is the same thing, I can get 16gb sticks and go up to 96gb if I wanted. Currently I edit and render in HD with no real issues. Some lag and hick-ups. Is their a specific type of RAM/CPU upgrade I can do to make it a decent 4K editor machine in Davinci? Or something passable. I was thinking of doing this to start: Getting 2x 16 GB ECC RAM or 4x 8GB ECC RAM (I was going to simple pick the cheaper option but if their is a performance advantage. (I also believe I can only run 1333MHZ 10600R 12600R style ram) Getting 2x CPU that is Intel Xeon W3690 @ 3.47GHz it has the highest mark on CPU benchmark and is $36 CDN each on eBay which puts it in the lower 1/3 of price point. But my other options could be any of these Xeons X5677, X5660, X5680, X5670, W3680. Let me know what you think.
  6. what's everyones opinion on just getting a 6pin female to 2 x 8pin (with one being 6+2) adaptor and just running off of my power supply through that (its a 650watt power supply. even if its thin gauged wire on eBay I could resider with heavier gauge.
  7. Hello, Im just curious if this is a possible Frankenstein solution. I don't think I am going to go ahead with doing this, but I'd really like to know the answer. I have an HP Z600 and for anyone who knows the PSU only has one PCIE connector which happens to be 6PIN. I have come across a GTX 970 which requires both a 8PIN and 6PIN PCIE connection. I had a 250 watt old as heck PSU (Bestec ATC 250w 12v) with molex connections. I also have a 2x molex to 8pin(6+2) PCIE adaptor. Can this all be plugged in together to work? As in the pin 6 runs from the OEM PSU and the 8Pin runs off of a PSU from the 90s? I just don't know how you would send a message to the 250w PSU to turn on and the PSU. I did find this funny thing here: add2psu.com
  8. It does edit 1080 no problem. Maybe a little slow on rendering and sometimes i get lag in the playback when editing (but that's a non issue right now) This upgrade is more as a want instead of a necessity. As I also want to use and edit 2.7k Also novice to all this and trying to find info can be daunting
  9. ALSO MAYBE THIS IS A BETTER QUESTION... I have an opportunity to buy this for $100 cdn... But it's 8pin... Can i make it work? https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Graphics-Cards/TURBOGTX970OC4GD5/
  10. Yes, that's correct it's a Quadro fx4800... Was thinking something in the 4gb range? Looking for something for a video editing workstation. Hobbyist level. Using free vsdc video editor with maybe an upgrade to premier in the future.. Currently has 12 gig of ram and duel Xeon CPUs
  11. Hello, Middle aged man new to computers as a hobby. Bought a z600 with a old GeForce 4800 1.5 gb GPU. 6 pin connector. As anyone familiar with the z 600 the PSU isn't ungradable and only has a 6pin connector for gpu. Curious what's my options for an upgrade.... And can I use a 6pin to 8 pin connector to give myself more options?
