    CTD issues

For the benefit of anybody searching for answers, I tried this and it didn't help unfortunately.

You mean a full system reboot? It's not doing that, just crashing to desktop. Certainly not while the system is idle.

    CTD issues

Thanks for the suggestion. Tried this evening with both sticks of RAM with XMP switched off, it crashed about an hour in but definitely lasted longer and only crashed once. I'll try running one stick at a time over the next couple of days. I ran Memtest a couple of days ago and it came back with no issues. CPU temp topped out at 49 today so that's fine. GPU hit 70, not great but I don't think it should be causing issues.
  4. Hi guys. I'd appreciate if somebody could help me out with this. TL;DR - Games crashing, how do I find out why? I'm sure this is a common issue with many potential causes, so what I'm really looking for here is somebody to help me understand what's going on and get to the root of the issue. I had a look around the forum, there are a number of topics like this but none seem to have working conclusions. I've had a number of issues with games crashing to desktop. My machine is fairly new, built last summer. Specs are: Windows 10 Home MSI Mag X570 Tomahawk Wifi (BIOS E7C84AMS.115) Ryzen 9 3900X (no OC) 2 x 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX (XMP profile 2, 3200MHz) EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super XC Ultra Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB (main drive) Samsung 860 EVO 1TB (storage drive) Crucial CT240BX200SSD1 (storage drive) Corsair RM650X I built this back in August. It's my first build, as far as I know everything went smoothly but there's a chance I've missed something in terms of like a BIOS setting or something. However when I first built it I ran various benchmarks and found no real issues - at least nothing I couldn't find a fix for at the time. My main purpose at the time was to make a machine for video editing, specifically using Adobe Premiere Pro, but I enjoy gaming so I'm using it for that too. I use the Studio Drivers - Premiere doesn't seem to like the Game Drivers. However, I have tried switching to Game Drivers and this makes no difference. I'm not running any overclocks except XMP, and I have PBO switched off. So far I've played Command and Conquer 3, Mortal Kombat 9, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Fallout New Vegas and Lego Ninjago. All through Steam except C&C. C&C was a while back, I don't remember having any issues with it, and I've been playing MK9 for ages on and off and I don't remember it crashing - if it happened once or twice I may have ignored it. SotTR did crash a few times - I put this down to graphics settings, lowered them and got past it. FNV crashed on me a few times but I put this down to the game being buggy - there were at least 2 crashes in specific places that are known issues with the game. Ninjago is proving to be a real pain in the ass though. I've been playing it about 3 days (it was free a while back on Steam, and I wanted to play something light hearted after 200 hours of Fallout) and it just keeps dying. Sometimes I'll play it for 30-40 minutes before it crashes, sometimes it'll crash before it gets to the main menu. It never gives a warning or dialogue, just straight up crash to desktop. I've tried updating Nvidia drivers, and using both Studio and Gaming drivers. I've also tried lowering the graphics settings, but frankly I don't think this machine should have any issue running that game. Recommended (not minimum) specs for the game are AMD FX-6100, 4GB RAM, GTX750Ti, so I shouldn't really be having issues. If I have to sack off this game I don't really care, but I don't want this to be an issue with other games. As I said, I'd really like to know what's going on. I've seen that there are some entries in Event Viewer around the time of crash, but this isn't really my area of expertise so the messages don't mean much to me - I'm not even sure if the ones I've found are relevant. One thing I haven't done is update the BIOS, but I'm reluctant to do that without knowing what the issue is. I've looked through the update notes of the more recent BIOS versions and nothing that's been updated points towards PCIE or GPU issues/improvements. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  5. @PineyCreek @Eigenvektor @Master Disaster thank you all for taking time to reply. Searched the hardware IDs, turns out it's a USB C port policy controller for my graphics card. I don't use VR so it's not really an issue for me. Thanks for helping me with this!
  6. I'd really appreciate if someone could help me on this. It's not a "problem" as such, but I hate having things like this lurking around with no apparent reason. Went into Device Manager today and saw an unknown PCI device with no drivers, see screenshot. The only PCI device I have is my graphics card, which can be seen further up the list as a Display Adaptor. This is a new built PC that I did myself, 2-3 months old. The only other PCI device I've had in the machine was another graphics card - I originally bought a Gigabyte 2070 Super, but it was faulty so I sent it back and now have an EVGA 2070 Super. Can anybody help me figure out what this is? In case any of this info is relevant, my machine is: Ryzen 9 3900X MSI Tomahawk Wifi X570 EVGA 2070 Super Samsung 500gb NVME SSD (main drive) Samsung 1tb SATA SSD Crucial 250gb SATA SSD 32GB Corsair Vengance Generic DVD drive
  7. Thanks man, I didn't think these were around any more.
  8. This is the one: https://www.eteknix.com/roccat-kone-gaming-mouse/
  9. I need a new mouse, and there's far too many to choose from. What do people recommend? I'm a palm gripper, and my main concern is comfort. Years ago I had a Roccat Kone (original version). This was by far the most comfortable mouse I've ever had, but it wore out after something like 3 or 4 years. I was pretty annoyed about this, so I replaced it with an EpicGear, which frankly wasn't as good - but to be fair has lasted a good while. Wrote to Roccat to ask if the current Kone lineup is actually the same size and shape as the original (I'm sure they looks smaller), and they essentially wrote back telling me that they have a current Kone series - thanks guys, super unhelpful. If they still made the original Kone I would absolutely have this again; great feel, enough buttons but not a silly amount, and (less importantly) looks pretty good. There's so much to choose from, and sadly in the UK we don't really have any stores that have a lot on display to try. Any input is much appreciated.
  10. Thanks. Is that the only real benefit then? I thought it was supposed to perform better under UEFI.
  11. I built myself a new PC last week. (Parts list is here: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Styxx1000/saved/m8HNcf, although I'm not sure that's much use for this issue) Today I realised that I've installed Windows on an MBR partitioned drive (NVMe Samsung 970 Evo Plus). This is my first build so there's a certain amount of learning for me here, basically I hadn't realised that this was a thing. I found another thread saying that UEFI needs the drive to be GPT partitioned. Also, this link was provided to convert: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-convert-mbr-disk-gpt-move-bios-uefi-windows-10 My main question is, is there any downside to converting the drive in this way, or would it be better for me to do a clean install of Windows? I've not done anything serious with the PC so far, so a clean install won't screw me, but if I can avoid having to set up everything again then that would be great. If I do need to re-install, am I likely to run into any issues with the Windows license key? Bearing in mind that I've already used it once, albeit on the same machine. Also, to convert to UEFI I have found two sections in the BIOS that mention UEFI, please see attached pictures. I think that I need to set the first one to UEFI, and that I can leave the second on LEGACY+UEFI. Is that correct? Many thanks to anyone who takes the time to read and reply.
  12. I'm about to build myself a new PC. It's going to be living on the floor under my desk (no room on the desk unfortunately) so I want to get something to stand it on to keep the dust out, especially with the PSU at the bottom of the case. Does anyone have any decent suggestions? I've had a look around online and I can't see much. There's a bunch of X-shaped stands like this that seem to be somewhat popular, but I'm concerned they look a bit small. The case I'll be using is a Fractal Define R6, so it needs to fit that (543mm x 233mm).
  13. Without even googling that, I know exactly what you mean! I've completely avoided RGB, it does look cool when it's done well but I'd rather look at my screen. Thanks both of you for the explanation, really helped me to understand it.
  14. @Bartholomew, @TofuHaroto, thanks very much, I really appreciate the help! I couldn't find any info at all on what the connector was for. So is that a standard thing then? How come Corsair don't support it at all?
  15. I'm looking at building a system and I've chosen the MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk WIFI as a motherboard. I've put it together in pcpartpicker.com and it's flagged up a compatibility issue with the board and the PSU: I've had a look at the manual (https://download.msi.com/archive/mnu_exe/mb/E7C84v1.1.pdf) and it looks to be the CPU_PWR2 connector. I've looked up the power supply and there's no mention of a 4 pin connector. No problem, I figure I'll just choose another. But I've been through the whole Corsair website and I can't see anything PSUs that have the 4 pin connector. Have I missed something here? This is my first build so I'm not that knowledgeable, but if it's a non-standard connection then it seems weird that MSI would use it, and if it is a standard connection then it seems weird that Corsair wouldn't have it on any of their products. I'm open to other suggestions on PSU, but if possible I would like to stick with Corsair as I trust them.
  16. Yeah, I really like it but actually in the last couple of days I've settled on the R6. Did a bit of research and it seems to be better for both noise and airflow, and it's also a little smaller - the R7 is definitely at the top end of "mid-tower"! Thanks for the suggestion
  17. Unfortunately I need it sooner than the published release dates for Zen 3 and Ampere, and to be honest I'd worry that if I wait, they'll just be mega expensive and I'll end up going with this stuff anyway. I need a decent set up for some work I'm doing, so can't really afford to wait. Funny enough, after posting here and one other forum, and doing a bit of research, I've already changed the RAM and case fans to the ones you've chosen. Sill debating the 2060 Super vs 2070 Super, but I'm leaning towards the 2070. The Fractal case is my B option, if I can find something with a drive bay that looks like it actually has decent airflow and doesn't look like it was designed to suit a child that has been watching Transformers too much, then that's already my main choice for a 0 drive bay case. Thanks for you're input, it's definitely reassured me with some of my choices! And thanks for taking the time to post
  18. Yeah, if it's in the manual then it's hard to disagree. Thanks for the info!
  19. That makes sense for the PSU, I wasn't sure if I'd missed something else with that. Case looks good and I do appreciate the recommendation, but I'm going to have a look for something with a 5.25" bay for a DVD drive that still has good airflow. It's something I still use semi-regularly.
  20. Thanks very much guys! @Mateimm I assume your choice of case is to do with airflow? As a matter of interest, why did you suggest the change of PSU?
  21. Budget (including currency): Around £1700, a little flexibility if there's good reason Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Premiere pro, Cubase 10, Soundvision/ArrayCalc/NoiseCalc (audio planning programs, similar to CAD stuff. NoiseCalc can be somewhat processor-intensive). Gaming wise, I've been out of the loop for a while so I've got a few older games to work through, but I expect I'll be wanting to play things like Far Cry 5/6, Mortal Kombat 11, Cyberpunk 2077 in 6 months. This is replacing my old 1st gen i7 which has done well, but is now 11 years old. Certainly got my money's worth out of that. It's my first build, so although I've done a fair bit of reading (including the tier lists here, which were super helpful) I'm well aware that I may have missed something. I already have a keyboard and mouse, as well as an audio interface and speakers, so that's not been factored in. Looking to buy a new monitor, I'm considering an Iiyama Red Eagle at the moment but in general I'm looking for something 1440p, but likely just the one monitor. Also worth mentioning I have a 1TB Samsung SSD that's going to go into this as well, I didn't include it in the PC Part Picker list as I'm using that for costing and I've already bought this SSD. As the title says, this is for video editing, audio recording and gaming. Video editing in Premiere Pro, nothing super heavy (for a YouTube channel) but render times on my laptop are killing me right now. CPU choice was driven by this. Audio recording is occasional. Also as mentioned above I'm just getting back into gaming. Don't care about RGB, so I've largely tried to avoid it. It looks great on a lot of builds, but it's just not something I want to get into at the moment - I know that if I do I'll spend too much time messing around with it when I should be working. I have no current plans to overclock, but that may change in future. I don't expect this machine to be working at 100% 24/7, but I'll be pushing it from time to time. I chose an X570 motherboard for a bit of future-proofing, and the GPU seems to be a good balance of performance and cost. RAM as recommended on the motherboard's product page. Because of the recording usage I'm trying to make this a very quiet build. Little background noises from things like fans are a real killer when you're working with audio. Not to mention a loud tower is just annoying. That's driven me towards a quiet case and quiet PSU. Things I'm concerned about specifically: Fans - the case comes with 2, is this likely to be enough? CPU cooling - the Ryzen 9 comes with an air cooler, I read that it's decent but am I likely to want something better? Are the components I've picked likely to play nice together, or am I setting myself up for problems? Excuse the long post, I'm trying to give as much detail as I can. Thanks to anybody who's willing to take the time to share their knowledge and help me with this. Looking to buy ASAP, if I were experienced I'd have placed the orders by now but I'd rather get some knowledgeable input first.
