  1. Ok so i needed a larger switch as my 5 port one was full and i decided to go to the local computer recycling charity to see what they had. The only Gigabit switches available were Netgear GS748v3 48 port ones. As they were only £20 i picked one up. It works well so far but i was wondering if it was ok to unplug some of the case fans as I am not going to go beyond around 10 RJ45 connections and it is quite loud as it is intended for a rack mount?
  2. Ok so this may be a dumb question but I currently have a 350 Meg connection officially (sometimes get up to 400 meg) and am running a Gigabit switch but I want to go up to Gigabit in future. So the question is should I upgrade to a faster switch to give headroom if i get the faster connection?
  3. I picked up a 2tb Verbatim NAS end of line stock (new in box) for £50 I just had to enable SMB1. The SMB1 is a bit of a hoop but is relatively straight forward and the network drive now just mounts and it makes a good deep storage drive. Verbatim Desktop 2TB NAS Drive 247591 (pless.co.uk)
  4. So I have not long built this pc (in the last 6 months) and I was having issues because I was using older second hand 2400mhz ram. So I thought upgrade the ram while I can get it at a relatively decent price got 64gb of 3200mhz cl16. Now I am having the issue of the CPU running at 100% and being the slow down factor as I download large numbers of files into lightroom. Currently I have the 10600. So the question is - Is it worth going up the cpu stack in the 10/11 gen or do I wait a year and go for a 13? just to add this is a work use computer used for photo and video editing and has a 3060 because it is what I could get at msrp and was available.
  5. I was speaking to his boss and he seemed quite happy not having to pay the gas bill for the heating compared to the electric the mining was using but I think was charging back for the electric.
  6. I was just in a business park unit to pick up an order from a small warehouse and saw that they were running a couple of racks of older GPUs for mining in one corner. I was curious as we are in Glasgow and electricity isn't exactly cheep here, but when i spoke to the guy he said part of what makes it pay is they have been able to save on the heating bill this winter as the gpu heat warms the whole space and they shut off the normal heater. Has anyone else seen this sort of thing?
  7. Over the past few years i have managed to change out to L glass mostly (kept the nifty 50 1.8 and 85 1.8) no EFS as my main stills camera is the 6D2. What i meant was that with the 7D having a crop sensor and the c70 being super 35 they don't use the full lens angle of view. The whole 8k thing is not a major pull for me as i said all of my clients currently want 1080p ( if they even realise about that sort of thing). A lot of them are just delighted i can add personalised lower thirds and end cards. i don't tell them i watched a few vids on after effects during the first lock down then spent a couple of hour building templates i can change in a couple of minutes and drop in. It will be the summer before i change out anything as i need to wait and see if i get a contract renewal at my other job How do you find the R5 in wet wether as I nearly managed to kill my original 7D mark 1 in a monsoon in Cambodia. Not something im looking to repeat
  8. All things being equal I am finally looking at trading in my canon 7D mk2 during the summer and getting a new body for filming. Most of the stuff i film ends up on facebook, twitter so most of my clients have that 2min limit on vid length Decisions already made At lest 4k as even if the majority of my clients don't currently need it that may change Stick with the canon ecosystem as I have the lenses and am not changing out the stills body So the question is do i go for the C70 with its internal ND filters and new type battery but still have a crop on my lenses or do I go for the 5C with its full frame 4k but older style batteries with less capacity (i currently have half a dozen that would work with it) I figure i can get the ND adaptor for the 5C at the cost of 3 extra batteries for the C70 so costs work out around the same give or take a tenner
  9. So I finally managed to find a 3060 at a reasonable price in stock to finish off my rebuild and ordered it. The 3060 will be replacing my current 1650 which is hooked up to 3 monitors (2 matching Samsung and an AOC). The AOC is mounted vertically at the side to give me a place to read documents without interfering with the main screens, it is old and only has vge and dvi connections. The new card only has HDMI and Display port connections. So the question is this - Is it better to get a Display port to VGA, Display port to DVI, HDMI to VGA or HDMI to DVI connecter with the caveat that whichever type of output i don't use will be used for the main monitors? the card im getting has 2 hdmi and 2 display port outputs.
  10. Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly the adobe suit Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I currently have what was a prebuilt MSI infinite 9sa-871uk which now has i5-9400f Be Quiet BK006 Pure Rock 2 Single Tower CPU Cooler (upgraded from stock intel cooler) GTX 1650 AERO, 4G 16Gb Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4 PC4-19200 2400MHz Ram (2x8) (upgraded from 8Gb) 256Gb M.2 2Tb HD (upgraded from 1TB) 2x 256Gb Sata SSD 1x 1TB Sata SSD Corsair CX750 power supply (upgraded from 350W, 80PLUSE BRONZE) Mother Board has no name markings but is mini ATX In a NZXT 510 2x NZXT 120mm fans (top and rear out) 2x Easythreed 120mm connected to the supplied manual controller (front in) After looking about at what is available with the feature i want locally I decided on a ASUS TUF GAMING B560M-PLUS, Intel B560, Socket 1200 Motherboard for my next upgrade. what i am looking for advice on is the CPU as there are a couple within my budget the 10500 and 10600k unfortunately the 11600 is just beyond what i am currently willing to spend. The price difference between the 10500 and 10600k is around £10 the question i have is the performance uplift worth the almost doubling of the tdp and posibly having to add in the cost of a cooler upgrade. I dont plan to overclock as this is a system to do editing on and will be running for 8 hours plus regularly doing this.
  11. Good to know thanks that may be an option depending how many PCI slots the new board I get has as I defiantly need to add a Bluetooth card
  12. For ease of access to cpu's I am planning on a 10000 intel. I need 6 usb on the back panel, 1 m.2 and 4 sata headers. I am also sitcking with my current 1650 as the best GPU i can find around here is a 1660 super.
  13. So I have continued my gradual upgrade plan by buying a NZXT H510 case to have more room to build build in. It comes with USB 3.1 Gen 1 and Gen 2 front panel connectors of which my current board only has the 3.1 Gen 1. Now when I am looking at new Motherboards they all seem to have the 3.1 Gen 1 and 3.2 Gen 1. So my question is are the USB 3.2 Gen 1 headers compatible with the USB 3.1 Gen 2 (type c) connector on the case?
  14. Wont need to cut and drill the psu just unscrew and reseat the socket there is about a 2/3 mm overhang I was just going to sand wedge the case between the plastic psu socket and the metal psu case.
  15. So I went looking for a 500/650w PSU and was hoping to get a modular one if posable. What I discovered was that there was basically nothing left in my area and found one shop that had three CX750s just delivered so I garbed one while I had the opportunity (just as well my area has just been put in lockdown again as of midnight). So i was wondering if everyone is having this supply difficulty or if I just ran into a blip. Now question number two when fitting the new PSU the socket is hitting the side of the case. What I want to know if it is best to remove and refit the socket (its only 2 screws) or to cut away part of the case? I don't want to reinitiate the PSU as the case has a filter for it.
