  1. Over the weekend I got one of the cooler Aliexpress items.

It's a USB wifi ap/extender/repeater thing and it works pretty well for being $5.

Setup is a little tricky as you have to follow the instructions to a point or it does not save your configuration settings.

It's compact and seems to deliver the full 10/100 speeds of the ethernet port. As a cheap and dirty AP it works pretty well.

My use case Is pretty niche as it's designed for TVs that don't have wifi or devices without wifi. (it can be used to convert wifi to an ethernet port). I'm using it the other way around as a wifi AP.

My project is still a work in progress, I'm trying to solar power a wifi camera but put it in the middle of nowhere without paying for a cellular service. The problem? The low-power cameras I want to use only have wifi and it so happens that the 1.2km HaLow bridge kit ONLY has ethernet. So I needed a low-power solution to convert from ethernet to wifi.

The entire project needs to be USB 5v to keep it CHEAP and the bigger APs/cameras have much higher power draw.

As of right now, the entire project draws about 2.48w continuous or a working 510mA. If anyone is ever curious the wifi USB AP is a Pix-Link 300m and it draws around 200mA continuously or around a single watt of power.

I'm still debating whether the project is worth doing as the solar part would cost an additional 100ish $ and the wifi HaLow has yet to turn up (me think its on a boat).

If I don't end up doing the full project I'll prob put wifi in a garage or smthn.

  2. After almost 3 weeks my Aliexpress order is still shipping ... Ran into a few returned items (the wifi bridge kit). and had to reorder. A few things did arrive tho (USB adapters and a USB power meter)

I had 2 seperate orders get "rejected" from shipping center for no reason, problem being I couldn't get my money back till it fully returned.

@podkall I've had to piecemeal my items, ordering them individually. So far it's working I just have to pay $2 shipping for each item.

so the "rejected" things were free shipping? or are you paying 2$ extra on top of already paid for shipping?

When I had the items in a group order to qualify for the free 'choice' shipping program they got returned. When I order them one at a time they ship. Beats me. Shipping is $2 extra per item if I order them one at a time (cause they don't meet the $10 minimum for free shipping)

  3. I just ordered a Wi-Fi Hallow bridge kit from Aliexpress. I will probably give updates once I test it. Heck, I may even make a YouTube video.

got some other fun stuff too (mini wifi ap, USB buc converter (adjustable) and a USB power meter)

    2 wk shipping tho...

  4. sounds like more work than its worth.
  5. It's like other online marketplaces (craigslist like things) I've never used them personally but afaik they have scam protections in place. If it's too good to be true it is. If someone is advertising a free computer just move on. They are not giving you a free gaming PC.
  6. If only I didn't live on the other side of the US (east coast)
  7. 100mbit and gigabit switches with 8-24 ports are dirt cheap these days. you can get an 8 port switch from under $30 would a cheap wifi ap work? travel routers can be under $30 and be set up for just a simple AP
  8. I stopped using TikTok a little over a year ago and my life is all the better not using that stupid platform.
  9. The job that the guy may have had could have either been a helpdesk position (of different levels) or a general IT position. The fixing stuff makes me lean more toward the helpdesk.
  10. how fast is your upload speed on your internet connection? Are you using NVENC? What bitrate are you using?
  11. Restart it if you haven't in a while. Remove apps to free up storage (full storage can cause slowdowns) Do a full reset if you have all your important stuff backed up. other than that there is not much you can do
  12. I got the sound system fixed! Next week we get in the new part for the lighting system...

Always fun when things actually work the way they should.

It's a strand neo board, house lighting and stage lighting.https://vari-lite.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/datasheets/neo-console.pdf

CMOS battery went (Less than a yr old which is wild) for some reason it makes the board stop booting.

  13. Turns out the said new lighting board has a defective CMOS battery, why that makes the boot stop booting entirely is beyond me.

the supplier just sent out a repair manual and an Amazon link to the CMOS battery.

Ended up looking at the support documentation and it's an interesting board they are using.

    very custom ish

also found out one of our stage monitors makes a very not-so-nice noise when you plug it in...

    problems and more problems

  14. My school got a new lighting system (all led, new board, ect)

had some power outages last week and now it wont boot properly

love it when we need to get things started for our musical

  15. cheap ssds with a strange failure rate or the mb is doing something wrong, possible its sending funky power to the drive.
