A library (lib in Linux-land) is nothing more then a collection of functions the system needs to work. Works pretty much the same way as a Public Library if you want to read a book. The man pages have their own man page, open a terminal and type: man man Hit the Enter key and give it a go. Scroll with the arrow keys, pressing q exits the man page.
A repo is short for repository, a collection of software your system can use. It's normally used via a package manager. Synaptic is a common one for Debian-based distro's.
File manager is just what it says on the tin: a tool to manage your files.
Desktop and display managers are used in graphical environments. They're responsible you see pretty things on your screen. You don't have to use them, servers usually don't, nor does anything that won't need a GUI to interact with the outside world (i.e. humans).
You can find most all answers by using Google, reading books on Linux or even watch YT video's on various subjects. But the best teaching tool is experimenting stuff yourself.
For your entry level knowledge, I recommend using Pop_OS.

So the 5700G instead of the Athlon, correct?

I would definitely recommend faster ram, between 3200 and 3600MHz. 2133MHz is going to kill your CPU's performance. Ryzen likes fast RAM.

I'd change out the SSD, but that's just because I have a bad taste in my mouth surrounding Kingston, going back to when they sent every major tech reviewer a brand new, high-end SSD...then put the same label on a literal pile of shit that went out to consumers.

@Anthony: You reviewed the Librem 5 and the PinePhone, which was nice, but you kinda still left out the true GNU/Linux smartphones os which works fine for over 7 years now, has a much larger app ecosystem and an Android runtime (LXC container) called aliendalvik allowing to have the best of both worlds: SailfishOS
But not the community-made Alpha version you tried on the PinePhone, but on an officially supported relatively new device, either the Xperia XA2 or the Xperia 10.
It's A LOT smoother due to Hw acceleration by Android Kernel + Libhybris (android to GNU/Linux syscall abstraction layer) and as said, it exits for over 7 years, descending Nokia's MeeGo operating system.

    https://sailfishos.org

It's really day-to-day usable for years, even if you don't want to rely on the Android runtime.
Please try it to, otherwise you let "real Linux" on smartphones look a lot worse than it actually is.

If you guys still have the Starlink beta stuff, and assuming you also still have some ubiquiti networking gear (or could bother them for some), you could try creating some kind of area wifi network to emulate, to kind of "preview" what such a use case could be like in rural environments, where a couple "neighbours" buy a starlink dish and share the internet connection through WiFi antennas and check for speeds, latency, what the connection quality would be like if several people try to use it at the same time...
If that's even allowed by Starlink of course.

    Scrapyard Wars
Now we have a shutdown because of some virus.

Will it be possible to make a Online scrapyard wars edition? Where 3-4 teams get a low budget to buy the best bangs for the bugs PC.
Where it is possible to use ebay, Wish, Aliexpress, Amazone or Whatever.

Everything need to be ordet with in 3-4 days. And her is the catch if the stuff they get do not work. It is a shame...

Select a good Reliable and expensive seller og a cheap suspicious?

If 2 teams have malfunction hardware it is possible to merge the teams...
But the total value of the build need to be with in budget.

All teams starting to build at the same time. There are point for the 2 first teams to finish the build.

    Suggestion players:
Dennis, Sarah, Yvonne, Anthony, Janice, Alex, Colton, Linus.

One team member is doing the shopping, the other is building the PC. (Internet support is allowed but reduce points)

You guys do gaming builds at the end of the year, right? Can you compare those computers to each other so we can so how much performance we gain over the last year?

Would be nice to see how a pc from dec 2018 compares to a computer from dec 2019 and so on. I think it would be interesting to see something like "a pc that cost $600 in 2020 is X% faster than a $600 pc from 2019"

I come from a film/game vfx background and while 4k/240 hz monitors are good and all, i wondered if you knew about the 3840-7860 hz led tiles they are using in virtual production studios, like the work ILM did on the Mandalorian.
Im not involved directly, but from what i gather they use a number of powerful rigs using beefy quartos.   I have no idea if you can game on the set up but I thought you'd like to try and if it works it would be very immersive too.   I know there are a couple of studios set up in Surrey and south Burnaby and more are being setup and planned as the film industry is suffering and this is a great way to get to far off lands with out risking traveling and covid

Did you remember to install network packages during install? Seems not. Boot into the install ISO and arch-chroot into the install and
pacman -S dhcpcd NetworkManager then reboot into the install then
    systemctl enable --now dhcpcd NetworkManager

badlou101 reacted to Nayr438 in Arch wifi not working
Dhcpcd is no longer included in Arch Base.

If your using a graphical environment you need to install and enable NetworkManager.

If your not using a graphical environment then install and enable dhcpcd.

You can actually use either regardless, just for simplicity I'd pick one or the other based on the above. More graphical front ends use NetworkManager.

You will need to boot your Arch Install Media and mount and chroot into your install, to install them.

Otherwise you need to set a static IP.

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dhcpcd

Assuming your VM's network is configured correctly you should be able to get an IP from your router just by enabling the dhcpcd service

    sudo systemctl enable --now dhcpcd
By the way for future reference this has nothing to do with wifi - the virtual machine sees your connection as wired.

@badlou101 Do you have a need for the network type to be NAT? Try changing it to bridged and see if it works after that.
