They didn't get free parts, they just tested their support via phone like reseating RAM. Wasted labour maybe, but they didn't commit fraudulent activity, and I think even the extra labour to phone handlers is overthinking things a bit too much. Also I'm sure if they said a part needed replacement etc they didn't send it in for a refund but just tested their reaction and see if they would accept a return or see their RMA process

Also don't always trust that the ones that look good ARE good.... Even fake apple chargers look good on the outside but the inside tells a whole different story.

Cheap stuff with lithium batteries, you should run far, and run fast. Cheap stuff that plugs in to your mains socket (or outlet for our American cousins) normally has less scope for burning your house down, as it should trip the breaker before reaching that point. Do you feel lucky?

Personally I wouldn't. There are so many cheap, dangerous, electrical goods out there that claim to be certified, and even have the CE mark, but aren't. Looking like ones that are for sale in more traditional retailers is no guarantee that they are the same product. They could be the same, but have failed the QC, or they may have entirely different internals.

It really depends on how they are made. Even expensive electronics can be a fire hazard. To mitigate the risk, only buy from brands that have passed certification that you trust.

RTX 3090 reacted to Kisai in New system to deal with semi-heavy video footage
Don't do video editing on a laptop, it will make you cry. You basically need a $6000 laptop if you want to do professional level video editing because you need something that is fairly close to an engineering/gaming laptop for it to not be a terrible experience. The second you decide to encode video on it, the fans will spin up and will be obnoxiously loud, even then. Most of those iGPU laptops are far too weak to do any meaningful video work, and even the ones that do, are still overpriced compared to a desktop.

If you are looking for a very basic upgrade, upgrade the RAM and the GPU in the desktop. While you don't necessarily need a high end GPU, you do need a Nvidia 40-series if you want to do AV1, or a 20/30 series if you want h.265 hardware support.

And you need the paid license for Davinci Resolve to use ANY of the hardware encoding. So if you haven't done that, buy the USB dongle license so you can move it between your systems. Otherwise any hardware upgrade won't see an improvement.

Laptops can be used to edit video, but they're usually not used to actually do the heavy lifting, they are used to "cut" the video to do the dailies in the field, and then passed over to the people with Mac Pro workstations or something similar. The XT-3 appears to support HEVC, so I would again, suggest picking newer hardware to deal with that, since Resolve will attempt to keep the original video intact and not re-encode if doesn't need to.

At any rate if I were in your shoes I would replace the GTX650 with a RTX 4060 at least, and try to get a 32GB RAM upgrade if you want to try and use the rest of it.

You don't know until you try.  Also try to cgargeback the shipping charges, you should never be charged for an RMA for a product under warranty.

If that fails, small claims court time.  It's not anywhere near as scary as it sounds.

Yeah, even if they charged the cost of a full licence divided by the timeframe he used it for, that could be argued as reasonable. But a full years licence and add ons on top of that is extortion.

Responses from companies like Solidworks and Adobe just make people want to pirate their software even more, to the point where a surprising number of people consider pirating adobe software as ethical, and I don't blame them

im done with em now. They sent me an email a few weeks ago mentioning that ive spent over $500 with em, so putting my money where my mouth is by abandoning the ecosystem now.

The replacement 60w cable is for one that *caught fire* out of the box. The charging stand was purchased in early July and still has not shipped. The charger was also purchased at the same time. It arrived last weekend in Late September.

if anyone has any recommendations on alternatives id love to hear em... minimum 30w charging, 50+ ideal. Tips to support all connectors including lightning, usb-c and micro-usb.

4/2013: Keeper threatened to sue Fox-IT for finding that the vault password was being logged and the logs were sent to their server. (https://blog.fox-it.com/2013/04/05/security-advisory-unencrypted-storage-of-confidential-information-in-keeper-password-data-vault-v5-3-for-ios/)

12/2017: Keeper sued Dan Goodin and Ars Technica. (https://www.techdirt.com/2018/03/09/keeper-security-reminds-everyone-why-you-shouldnt-use-it-doubles-down-suing-journalist/)

5/2018: Keeper's servers can request the encryption key during login. It didn't get patched until the security researcher went public. It was patch 2 days later. (https://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2018/May/41)

5/2018: I learned Keeper has a GitHub account and immediately found an out of scope vuln but didn't want to get sued. So I've told no one publicly. Well besides stating that they have the worst downgrade attack out of all the password managers I've looked at. Well LastPass's is almost as bad but it is also silent. So it's both better and worse. LastPass "fixed" theirs when I told them about it but it was unfixed when I checked a few years later.

    ----

Other password managers (if you're looking for a different password manager as a sponsor):
TL;DR: Dashlane or maybe 1Password if they implement basic features (P.S. 1Password is a Canadian company).

Dashlane: Current best but I don't use it because it doesn't meet my level of security. Also they used a really bad open source random number generator that Keeper also used. It was RC4 with a key of 32 bytes from a good CSPRNG followed by 224 bytes of time based data. I believe both companies have removed that library.

1Password: Has the best tech and would meet my level of security, but the browser plug-in doesn't implement edit. So it dumps you into the web client and hands over your encryption key. Also to administrate your account you have to use the web client. Again exposing your encryption key.

Proton Pass: They paid a DDoS ransom and then said it was a sophisticated attack because the attacker ran tracert to find their data center and ISP then DDoSed them too. "We all have PhDs in physics so we know encryption..." got hit by several XSS bugs. Also GPG yuck.

Bitwarden: Has a limited downgrade attack.

LastPass: Has a silent downgrade attack and doesn't implement change password or change iterations except as a web page (iframe, webview, or opens in a browser depending on platform). You can also cause an email to go out that someone tried to logged in from another country with your password. Which will cause most users to change their password. I reported this to LastPass in January last year still not fixed. Among other things. Oh this one's funny they had a padding oracle where they sent the decrypted byte that failed to the server as an error code. Just clown shoes. But I doubt you'll go with them after the latest breach.

I wasn't going to get into it but you're completely ignoring some insanely important context here and parroting bullshit.

First one, the civil legal system generally isn't accessible to most people requiring significant time and money just to be present in proceedings. The simple act of using the threat of legal process against someone who can't even afford to participate is an incredibly shitty thing to do. Small claims exists in most western countries for a reason and could have very fairly been solved using that process.

Second, copyright damages are complete bullshit. What are solidworks damages here? $99. That's the most a reasonable person would have paid for the software (maker version) if piracy wasn't an option. This guy was never going to buy the software so they never lost an actual sale. Arguing otherwise is just parroting the same bullshit games publishers have argued for years. They're wrong and you're just as wrong with them.

Third, Solidworks as a company have been going after small individuals for YEARS now. Way before hobbyist options were available. Back then they targeted people in poverty who literally had no way of paying for software that was the only way to participate in the hobby. This was so stupid and damaging for the industry that even solidworks took a step back and said "maybe we should make this software more accessible".

Fourth, Solidworks are choosing to spend more money on lawyers to threaten people than they actually retrieve. They are actively choosing to abuse the legal system and cause harm in order to create a perceived threat. Ethically those lawyers are pieces of shit and know exactly what they're doing. It might not be blackmail exactly but it is a threat and it's understandable why they described it that way.

Sure in a bubble what you're saying is right but you're not in a bubble. The world exists and Solidworks are abusing unfair processes that exist in the world. They're not to blame for the processes existing but they are to blame for abusing them. While they have a legal right to do what they've done we can criticise them for doing so alongside criticising the processes that allow it to happen. The same way I can criticise you for defending the abuse of a copyright system that is intentionally unfit for purpose.

Justice requires a proportional response. This was not a proportional response. Fuck Solidworks.
