I dunno, I had some $10 Sony on-ears for a good few years and I was very pleased with them. Only broke when I dumped a load of heavy books on them by accident (don't ask....)

Their absolute lowest end stuff is actually not too bad either. By which I mean the $10 stuff.

But past that point, it's a bit rubbish until you reach the real high end

Oh yes this is a major bugbear of mine.

Why is every tutorial these days in video form? I find it much easier to read some text at my own pace than keep playing and pausing a video.

To be fair, modern Linux DEs are actually really usable, if a little buggy. KDE and MATE are good examples.

But the general premise of your post is correct. Linux simply isn't meant to be an OS for "the average joe". For servers and embedded systems it's the industry standard, and it's also useful for the "techy" people who dislike Microsoft's practices and don't mind spending some time to set it up exactly how they like it.

This isn't down to a fundemental flaw with Linux. Instead, it's because it's developed largely by the "techy" people who are going to use it, so it doesn't matter if they have to dig around a bit to find what they want. If you look at the cases where [*]nix has had a huge commerical company behind it, then it's become incredibly successful - MacOS, Chrome, iOS, Android, and the various embedded systems that are probably based on it. But without that "muscle" it remains a niche kind of thing.

I will conclude by saying I can't stand the people who encourage happy Windows users to switch to Linux... let me tell you know, if Windows does the job for you then Linux won't be a revelation for you. On the other hand, if you find yourself constantly frustrated with Windows and have some time to spare to set Linux up, then it's probably worth giving a go.

As for me - I've used both. On balance, I'd probably rather use Linux, but I don't have the time to get it working perfectly, so I'm sticking with Windows for the time being.

I'd say go for Ubuntu Mate. https://ubuntu-mate.org/

For Steam, it's Debian-based, which generally seem to be the most compatible for Steam games.
Also pretty much all tutorials for other varieties of Ubuntu will work.
Mate (that's the desktop environment) is reasonably lightweight while also being easy to learn and not too different from Windows

Most distros these days will auto-install WLAN drivers, but that's subject to the manufacturer providing them.

Installing WLAN drivers on Windows would be similarly complicated if manufacturers refused to support Windows.

Mine is fairly simple... you can use phones in the cafeteria and the playground but nowhere else. You also had to have the sound off.

Computers, no real policy for students' own machines but I remember having to agree to a load of e-safety stuff before being allowed to use the school computers. Stuff like not abusing social media, not giving out passwords to others, farely sensible stuff in my opinion.

I don't mind well-trained dogs. In fact, I've even held leads for owners before when asked, so that they can open a gate / pick something up that they dropped / whatever.

However where I live, the vast majority are not well trained. Often I have dogs jump on me while I'm out walking (I don't care that "donnnn't worrrryyyyyyy heeeeee wooooonnnn't biiiiiiiiite!!", perhaps I don't want my personal space infringed by someone else's dog) which would be vaguely OK I guess if the owner made an effort to get them off, but usually they don't.

I think this comes from an assumption that everyone is a dog lover - PSA, they're not.

Twitter might be here to stay for a while. But they're doing an even worse job at evolving than Facebook anyway, so eventually they'll go the same way. I think you'll find a large proportion of high school age kids and younger university students have Snapchat and Instagram installed on their phones, but not Twitter.

But what the hell does Twitter have to do with this anyway?

pythonmegapixel got a reaction from thechinchinsong in Facebook may have to stop serving Europe if data protection ruling is enforced
Well they kinda have... Facebook and Twitter really have little to no appeal among younger generations anymore.

Facebook, being a huge company, cleverly snapped up Instagram and Snapchat.  But I reckon even if they hadn't, those two platforms would have beaten them.

Besides, Facebook comes from a time before mobile platforms were widespread, so it will naturally be less attractive in modern situations than Instagram and Snapchat, which were designed from the ground up for mobile devices.
