pythonmegapixel got a reaction from Mark Kaine in Where do you buy your digital movies/tv?
I think the reason is very obvious: somebody has to pay for the content to be made. If *everybody* pirated films then there would be no money in the industry anymore so there would be no films *to* pirate.

Honestly, if the streaming service has the content you want and you're going to use it a lot, then the monthly charge is very good value for money. The main problem is that many of them don't allow you to even view the catalogue until you buy a subscription, which is something they really need to fix.

Thought it would be nice to have a thread to share those opinions we all have which, while somewhat trivial, aren't popular. You know the kind of things.

PLEASE KEEP THIS THREAD COMPLIANT WITH THE FORUM RULES!!! You might well have an unpopular opinion which is political, discriminatory, or otherwise unfit for the forum, but to avoid ruining it for anybody else, please refrain from posting them here, thanks!

I'll start with an example. I believe that ice cream is better if it is allowed to melt for a short time before eating.

I don't see myself ever wanting a smartwatch.

I already carry around a glass slab which is constantly communicating over the internet, ready to alert me the instant a company I bought one thing from several months ago announces they have a sale on, or anyone decides to send me some random meme, or whatever. How much more connected do I really need to be than that?

Honestly I dislike push notifications on smartphones for a similar reason. If someone has information for me which is so urgent that it can't wait until the next time I decide to look at my phone, a text message probably isn't the best medium for that anyway - they should probably actually be phoning me.

It quite clearly has a water bottle holder (and the mounting points for a second one, if you wanted) - why not use that?

The lesson here is one we have seen many times in many different forms.

Social media companies have absolutely no duty to provide anything the vast majority of their users. You don't pay anything to use the platform, so it's not even like there's a minimum standard of service you can expect for your money. They are accountable to their shareholders, who expect a return on their investment, and by extension to those who pay to place advertising on their platform.

What is happening at the moment is rather unfortunate for those who've put in a lot of effort to build a community on Reddit's platform. But Reddit's platform is just that - Reddit's platform - and they are entirely within their rights to change it in any way that they see fit. So it was always on the cards that this sort of thing would happen.

Social media might be convenient, so by all means use it, but this debacle is yet another reminder that you should think very carefully before building something you really care about to be reliant on someone else's platform.

If you want to be able to put effort into a community endeavour and be certain that it will exist in the long term, then it has to be structured so that same community somehow owns and controls the platform it is built on.

That's very much subjective. You could always use a browser extension such as Stylus to apply a custom font, or indeed to apply the font-feature-settings rule mentioned above.

(For anyone who finds the auto-replacement thing particularly bothersome, that's the workaround).

The font doesn't need to be changed - just turning off the "contextual alternatives" feature would solve the problem.

It could probably be done with one line in the stylesheet somewhere:
    font-feature-settings: "calt" off;

I have to agree with this. I like the aesthetic of Inter, but this sort of feature honestly seems like someone simply trying to be too clever and not thinking properly about the possible side-effects.

"What laptop should I buy - using it for web browsing, Microsoft Office and Cool Math Games - budget $2000" type posts don't help either. In general, anything that suggests people should buy things they don't need and have no real use for is bad for the people involved, for society and for the environment.

There are plenty of people who are genuinely in financial difficulties through no fault of their own, though, and the general contempt for the poor that some seem to have is extremely worrying. Especially (at the risk of getting too political) when in some supposedly developed countries, one can work very hard in a job which is very beneficial or important to others and still barely manage to get by.

Is that a thing on iOS? On Android, if you drag down from the top in a full screen app, the usual status bar appears and temporarily covers part of the app, but it's still treated as in the foreground. You can still use the app's UI except for the small section which is covered - if you click anything it just automatically hides the status bar again. To actually put the app in the background you have to exit to the home screen or switch to another app.

I have a relative who, when they want to visit a different website, closes the browser, reopens it to the homepage, then types the URL in the Bing Search bar.

Doing this does have one massive advantage though - Bing applies some kind of spellcheck, which avoids those scam popups that you can get to by mistyping common websites.

So is there any standard numbered USB4-1.0, or not? I've lost track of this bull***t.

Look, USB Forum, how about you just have one version number. It starts at 1.0.  If there's a minor revision to the current standard, it goes to 1.1, then 1.2, and so on. If there's a new standard it goes to 2.0, then 3.0, then so on. Just like everything else. And absolutely NO rebranding previously named versions as something else, OK?

It really shouldn't be that hard.
