  1. Well, that's what happens when (a) you make a huge leap in technology (b) the competition goes backwards by adding awful software features that nobody asked for Well done Apple.

  3. Banned for discriminating against quadratics Banned for not pointing out the discrimination against quadratics
  4. Because if they can't live on minimum wage, the state either has to top it up with benefits or let people starve/freeze. Neither of those options are very good.
  5. Yeah, it's fulfilled by Amazon. The estimated delivery date is tomorrow. It's still not showing as dispatched. It isn't urgent, but if it doesn't arrive tomorrow I will be rather underwhelmed. I'm actually getting it delivered to one of their lockers rather than my home, as there's often nobody in. I don't imagine that makes much difference though.
  6. How long does it typically take Amazon to dispatch an item that is sold and fulfilled by them? I ordered more than a day ago and apparently it's yet to be dispatched. I don't usually buy from Amazon but I have a gift card to use up.
  7. I very rarely write my own name in conversations with people who already know me, unless I'm signing off an email - but when I do, it's capitalised. If I am talking about other people, I always capitalise their names. It's just respectful.
  8. Banned for: improper use of a colon
  9. Well, the reason I use them is exactly what I've described - at any one time the amount of money accessible using my card is quite small, so there's less to potentially be stolen. The interest paid will be more than a current account, even if it is rather small. In the UK, banks generally offer basic savings accounts which have no monthly charge and unlimited withdrawals. If you have a savings account with the same bank as your current account, you can transfer money between them electronically in less than a minute. Just to be clear: I'm not trying to blame you for your money being stolen, just suggest some things you could do which might reduce the chance of it happening again.
  10. I keep most of my money in savings accounts which don't have cards. The account which does have a card (would probably be called a "checking account" in the US - it's a "current account" in the UK) only has a small amount and no arranged overdraft. This minimises the amount of money that can be stolen using the card. I would strongly recommend that you consider doing this in the future. No disrespect or blame to the OP for this - they were probably unaware of the threat - but there's no way in hell I'd be keeping over $5000 in an account with a card which I carry around and use in cash machines.
  11. Can't you just take a screenshot of the QR code and save it to another device, then scan it off that other device after reset?
  12. What is the point of piping find to grep when find can do the searching by itself?
  13. Of course it's situational... but the applicability of any mode of transport is situational. Nobody would go to an out of town store, but a sofa and carry it home on a bike. But equally nobody would get in their car to visit their friend just across the street, unless the street is so large they can't actually cross it (which isn't that common for residential streets except in some bits of America). To be fair that's because the Netherlands generally puts a lot of effort into making their streets not just efficient but also safe and attractive. I live in the UK and the only time a street gets improved here is if there is a massive flashy project. There no kind of rolling programme to rebuild all streets to make them safer: the closest we get is just putting a new top layer of asphalt down. If anyone proposes putting in cycle paths, modal filters, wider footpaths and so on, there are NIMBYs claiming it will create traffic. No, what's creating traffic is people insisting driving round the corner to buy a pint of milk when it would literally take 5 mins to walk there. Or 2 mins on the new cycle paths. A few city centre places have Dutch-style paths and they are well-used in rush hour. So much so that if everyone on a bike got in a car instead, there would be absolute gridlock.
  14. Yes, fair enough. But there are eBikes - which are electrically assisted but not full-on motorcycles - and those get over the tiredness issue. In an ideal world I wouldn't want to live more than a few km from work anyway. Commuting is tedious, bad for mental health, more widely bad for society and the environment, and eats into leisure time. Of course this isn't an ideal world, so for many commuting is a necessity. It is also a matter of personal preference, of course, but arguably not just the preference of the driver/rider, as how people choose to travel has a very significant impact on others as well.
  15. High speed rail is great on land but no good if there's an ocean in the way. Farm tractors are great for driving over fields but rubbish for highway journeys. Cars are fine for individuals or small groups, but if lots of people want to make the same journey, a bus or train works better. And, combined with the correct infrastructure, bicycles are an efficient, convenient way of travelling within a small to medium-sized area but useless if your destination is too far away. The point I'm trying to make is that every transport mode has its place, and the fact that it doesn't serve a particular need doesn't mean that it shouldn't be used when it is suitable - so if you live too far away from your local supermarket to cycle, or don't have the physical strength to get your shopping home on a bicycle, that doesn't mean a bicycle is of no use to people who live closer.
  16. Or indeed conventional bicycles, with the correct infrastructure in place.
  17. Anyone can link to the Best Buy website and it doesn't mean they are Best Buy. Similarly anyone can pay for bots to follow them. It's a scam - don't engage.
  18. In the command line, change to the directory you want to search in, then find -name pattern where pattern is what to search for in the filename. (There are other things you can search by and for instead: see https://www.gnu.org/software/findutils/manual/html_mono/find.html) Or alternatively, you can do it in almost every GUI file manager - usually by looking for a magnifying glass icon.
  19. You may be violating the license agreement by installing Windows 10 Enterprise from an organisation's license agreement on a computer that isn't part of that organisation (which you would be doing if the license comes from your brother's work, for example) But as long as you do have a valid license, why wouldn't you be able to? Games are just Windows programs like any other.
