  1. And social media hasn't helped, because it's now easier than ever to see what the Jones' are doing/spending on--and feel jealous about it. "What laptop should I buy - using it for web browsing, Microsoft Office and Cool Math Games - budget $2000" type posts don't help either. In general, anything that suggests people should buy things they don't need and have no real use for is bad for the people involved, for society and for the environment. There are plenty of people who are genuinely in financial difficulties through no fault of their own, though, and the general contempt for the poor that some seem to have is extremely worrying. Especially (at the risk of getting too political) when in some supposedly developed countries, one can work very hard in a job which is very beneficial or important to others and still barely manage to get by.
  2. Banned because you didn't tell me what he said
  3. Banned because I don't know what the joke is
  4. At least if you do that, if there's a bad translation, there's generally some way to submit a better alternative...
  5. When returning an item to an Amazon Locker, does Amazon typically send an email just after you deposit it in the locker? I collected the parcel from a locker earlier and received an email almost immediately telling me the code had been used and the parcel had been collected, but I haven't received any such email for returning it.
  6. If I buy a flash drive, the USB version is listed using the specification numbers. If I go to the Kingston website, for example, there is little to no mention of the "SuperSpeed" names: This applies even if I go onto the actual product page and look at the specs: (click for screenshot) Kingston is not a cherry-picked example, they are the first flash drive company that came into my head. Other manufacturers do the same. So whether or not they are meant to be public-facing names, they are certainly being used as such.
  7. So is there any standard numbered USB4-1.0, or not? I've lost track of this bull***t. Look, USB Forum, how about you just have one version number. It starts at 1.0. If there's a minor revision to the current standard, it goes to 1.1, then 1.2, and so on. If there's a new standard it goes to 2.0, then 3.0, then so on. Just like everything else. And absolutely NO rebranding previously named versions as something else, OK? It really shouldn't be that hard.
  8. I have a relative who, when they want to visit a different website, closes the browser, reopens it to the homepage, then types the URL in the Bing Search bar. Doing this does have one massive advantage though - Bing applies some kind of spellcheck, which avoids those scam popups that you can get to by mistyping common websites.
  9. Lenovo - IBM's laptop division , including the famous ThinkPad series, was sold to them many years ago
  10. I have no idea if this will catch on or not. This is a new game which, similarly to the banning game or "Corrupt a Wish", you play by just replying to the person who posted before you. All being well, the previous post will contain a tech brand - such as "Apple". You should reply with another brand which has some relationship with Apple. For example, it could be a brand owned by them (e.g. macOS), the brand of a company that they bought out (e.g. Dark Sky), a company that is well-known to supply them (e.g. LG Display). But it doesn't have to be one of these - you are allowed and encouraged to make the connections as tenuous and unique as possible - we don't want the thread to devolve into "X - also a subsidiary of Amazon" - "Y - also a subsidiary of Amazon" - "Z - also a subsidiary of Amazon" and so on. Please don't connect two brands just because they make a similar/competing product - that's boring! (For example, if we're currently on Windows, don't put Ubuntu unless you can find an connection that isn't to do with them both being operating systems). Also, I hope this goes without saying, but please don't use this thread to promote brands. Finally, always say what the connection is. For example, if we start with Microsoft, you could reply with "Discord - Microsoft considered acquiring Discord in 2021, but their bid to do so was rejected". So let's start with Discord.

    Come back

Oh, I still read this forum fairly often, but I've not been at a keyboard for a while and I can't really be bothered with writing posts on a touchscreen. Maybe I'll go and start a new weird game thread... that might be interesting.
  12. We have to get away from the assumption that everyone will want to drive to every business. If I've just run out of one or two items - say I just need some milk - then why would I want to go to the trouble of driving to a store if I could walk to a local one in a few minutes?
  13. My view is that unless it is actually not suitable for its function (or suitable but incredibly annoying), the best keyboard layout - or indeed any other tool for a job - is the one I'm already familiar with. Why? Well, that is the one where I will be able to work most effectively - because it's less likely I will have to interrupt what I'm working on to work out how to do something. Another reason I don't give alternative designs of keyboard a chance is that I have the "muscle memory" required to type relatively quickly on a QWERTY keyboard. For anything else, I would have to spend some time getting used to it, and I would much rather spend that time doing something which is actively productive or enjoyable. I highly doubt that switching to a keyboard which allows me to type slightly faster will ever save as much time as I had to put in at first. This is the same reason I don't get those threads which are like "how do I configure the fan curves for optimum performance?". The time cost of posting that, looking through several conflicting replies and working out what the best settings actually are, and then actually entering them, is enormous compared to the minuscule benefits of the fan running slightly differently.
  14. Brit here. We definitely don't think that tea has to be black. I've never heard anyone say that. Most people here take their tea with milk and/or sugar, and there's a long-standing debate about which order you should put the ingredients in. Putting cream in hot drinks isn't a thing here either. We use milk, typically "green top" (semi-skimmed, typically approximately 1.8% fat) but sometimes "red top" (skimmed, almost all of the fat is removed).
  15. Are you using a very cheap HDMI cable? It's not all that likely, but that might not have enough bandwidth for 4K.
  16. Granted. but you're on the wrong side so it's warming you instead of cooling I wish I could get Talking Heads' "Road to Nowhere" out of my head
  17. Granted. But as soon as you install it, the witch threatens the authors with total destruction of the world unless they discontinue their port. I wish it wasn't so hot at the moment in Britain.
  18. Granted, you now own a small town in Kent, England. I wish I had an edible cheddar cheese sandwich.
  19. I'm sure I read somewhere that this so-called "rule" was actually invented by a mining company, who ran an advertising campaign to increase sales of diamonds. Not sure if there's any truth in this but it doesn't sound totally implausible.
  20. I'm having an issue with the Disney Plus app on my Samsung Galaxy S6 Lite tablet. Playback starts fine, but over time, both the audio and video start stuttering more and more. By about 2 minutes in, it's so bad that it feels like it's essentially running at a very jerky half speed, which obviously makes it impossible to watch properly. This occurs just as badly with both streamed and downloaded content and regardless of whether there is a WiFi connection, but I did try downgrading the video quality in the settings in case it was that, but to no avail. Other video apps such as YouTube work fine - this issue is specific to Disney Plus. Anyone else experiencing this and any ideas on how to solve it?
  21. The Treehouse of Horror episodes of the Simpsons are almost always the worst episode in the season - clearly some people must like them, or they wouldn't keep making them, though...
  22. PiP on mobile is allegedly a "premium" feature, at least for UK users. But on my phone it works anyway even though I don't have it (and never have). Maybe if you pay for the premium version it puts a button for it within the app, so you don't have to exit to the recent apps screen and manually turn it on. But I don't think that's really worth £12 a month.
