Linus is a child and it's clear that's who his videos are geared towards now. I stopped watching a long time ago.

100% disagree.  Their "customer face" may appear friendly, but they are far from what they seem to the uneducated consumer.  There are reams of evidence about their unethical, draconian treatment of its own employees.  There's the extreme kowtowing to CCP that is unethical at best and downright complicit at worst.  There's the profit-marginalizing via strong-handed control over its suppliers that leaves small businesses powerless to control their own destinies.  And that's not even to mention how shop-online in general has caused a massive growth in landfills and disposable goods--due to return policies that just bin items regardless of condition.

And then there's Bezos, who wanted to demolish a 500 year old bridge for his mega yacht.  I mean, hate on Musk all you want--but at least he branched out into new markets and created new jobs.  Bezos doesn't want to do anything but hoard piles of cash; and despite losing half his wealth in divorce, the lockdowns increased his net wealth by more than it was pre-divorce.  Not a penny of that goes into profit-sharing, increasing worker benefits, etc.

Intel seems to be bullish on Alder Lake coming later this year/early next year. This has me concerned.

Their insistence on bringing over big.LITTLE has me even more concerned with stability and scheduling issues on the OS side. I hope they make SKUs with only big cores or the ability to disable the little cores.

Until arm is better standardized and supported - not interested.

I can run whatever junk i want on x86, on arm all the stuff like boot process, drivers etc is different for each cpu/manufacturer, so given system will only work with provided os and may be some hacky half-functional community linux distro.

While that's the case what's the reason to choose it over average x86 laptop? It is clearly inferior in a sense that it is limited to whatever OS manufacturer installs and will become useless once manufacturer decides to stop updating it. But what the benefits are?

Safari on my Arm Mac, as there is a noticeable improvement with using it versus other browsers, especially Chrome with regards to battery life. Got Edge's Canary build sitting there just so I have a Chromium based browser on hand.

On my PCs I've wholly switched over to Edge.

Probably the same as 2 decades ago, a bunch of quickly thrown together and unoptimized software that runs like shit, worse than good software running on hardware that doesn't have all those bells and whistles...

Now you are just making up things about what a personal computer is.

"A personal computer is a multi-purpose computer whose size, capabilities, and price make it feasible for individual use. Personal computers are intended to be operated directly by an end user, rather than by a computer expert or technician."

If these AS macs aren't personal computers then there is no such thing as a personal computer.

These Macs might not suit your needs, but currently you are just ranting because change is scary.

I will say don't come and live here if you don't know what you're gonna do. Also if you hate the traffic and are sensitive to poor air quality (which in LA's defense has been gotten orders of magnitudes better within one generation). Cost of living is a b***h but its basic supply/demand at work sadly. Personally I will likely be leaving LA after finishing my CS degree as LA is not a tech hub to the degree other cities in the US are.

I will say that LA is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and the food and culture scene reflects upon it. As a foodie, living in a locale without a rich and varied immigrant population isn't fun. We're also close to varied activities and I've done the "surfing one day, go skiing the next day" thing during the winter months. LA also has a ton of different ethnic enclaves, including my own which makes connecting with the culture of the homeland easier and buying specialty items a lot easier. I've done the "living in small town America" and it is most definitely not for me.

The corporate moderation team on Discord has much to be left desired and has been embroiled in too many controversies. I also have seen a few photos of Discord employees in employee-only sweaters browsing NSFW booths at places like anime conventions; goes to show their professionalism. Their client is a resource hog, like all Electron apps are (Slack, VSCode); I believe there's an unofficial and TOS breaking third party client that uses a tiny fraction of system resources the official client does. Also a privacy nightmare in which those moderators can view DMs if you report it. I legitimately hope that Riot.FM and the new release of Teamspeak "5" takes off.

Against my advice, my parents leased a Mercedes C class that has been nothing but headaches until it was returned under California Lemon Law. The dealership and service employees' customer service skills were in my opinion A+, and many other automakers and dealerships could learn from them, but I would avoid those vehicles like the plague. I'll be sticking with Japanese vehicles.

sora.sky got a reaction from soldier_ph in Boeing to Begin 737 MAX Recert Flights
After more than a year of being grounded, Boeing is to start a series of FAA recertification flights for the 737 MAX type.
The first flight occurred today (6/29/2020) but is just the first step in a long haul to bring a very popular aircraft type back into service.

    My thoughts
Boeing has had a really rough past few years, events of their own design. Same goes for the FAA.
-> The 737 lineup has had its reputation tarnished, with less informed travelers even protesting about getting on proven 737NGs that large operators worldwide fly with little incidence.
-> Airlines have cancelled their orders for the MAX; even Boeing loyalists like Southwest Airlines in the US have purportedly had serious talks with Airbus to take on competitor aircraft: the A320NEO and A220.
-> Civil aviation authorities will no longer see the FAA's certifications of aircraft as the gold standard. More countries will independently certify; those that are unable to do so will likely look to the EU or the Chinese's civil aviation authorities for guidance as opposed to the FAA. Many on aviation focused forums have expressed they will wait until the Chinese have signed off.

I vehemently disagree on the notion that the end of digital cameras as OP's title is nigh. Smartphones have virtually deleted the market for dedicated cameras with sensors smaller than M4/3 yes. But today's camera buyers are not typical consumers - the market has shrunk to mostly hobbyists, prosumers, or professionals. Those that either make money or want a more capable device for taking photography. There's still situations, albeit niche, where a smartphone isn't going to cut it.

When Apple has a transition time of about two years, why would it bring out AMD models and introduce needless complexity into its hardware lineup?

I don't think it's Old Apple.  This is the Apple whose cheapest phone outperforms all Android phones realizing that it might have a chance at dominating computer performance as well.  No guarantees it'll succeed, but it's in a good position to try.
