Charlie Groves reacted to IkeaGnome in Scrapyard Wars Student Edition
Little tip for you and @Charlie Groves . Seems like you two already know it but Quadros can be a good steal for price to performance on the cheap.

Any chance you, with your Gold Contributor badge, can get LTT to open up scrapyard wars to the entire forum?

Competition is still in progress, we are mostly using ebay and FB market place so we decided on 2 weeks to order plus extra week for any shipping delays.
At the moment, one base system is a xeon, the other is an 4th gen i5. Hunting for graphics cards now!

I would *dearly* love to get the entire forum in on something like this, to see EDIT: who (I can't speel) had the best for X dollar amount, but not told what the challenges will be until they are built. Then donate all the system to charity once the challenge is over.
Keep up the great work, I love ideas like this!

Unfortuntly we are too poor for the amazing LTT screwdriver, so having to use the £2 screw driver from pound land. I wonder if it has better price to perfomrance than the LTT one... 🤔😉

Decided to do scrapyard wars with a friend at uni. Building the best PC for £100.
Even though we are competing against each other we decided to try to boot both of our base towers today together. The madness below is the result of not being able to find a single VGA cable in our whole city and being too impacient to order on amazon. So using a donor GPU to check for output (the quadro on the table is dead), and another PC's PSU to power it. PC boots!
Wish us luck in finding a good GPU.

Charlie Groves reacted to WoodenMarker in Who is slick and did he ever get fired frrom LTT?
There was a bit at the end of a TechQuickie as joke but that's about it.
-
Charlie Groves reacted to Kyuubixchidori in When did they start calling Slick, Luke?
this. I believe they had a team of 3 or 4 when they used nicknames. kind of went away as they grew and that^
I still call him slick when I talk about LTT

Charlie Groves reacted to Tautedorus in 650W for 2060super+ryzen 5600x
Ryzen 5600X has more or less the same power consumption, so wattage wise you'll be fine. However, we don't know if your PSU is a good quality one. If it's a poor quality unit, maybe it's a good idea to upgrade alongside the CPU. So, it would be better if you include the PSU model as well, not only the wattage. And yes, you will need a motherboard upgrade because B350 chipset motherboards won't support the new Ryzen 5000 series processors.

Charlie Groves reacted to Rauten in 650W for 2060super+ryzen 5600x
Yes, 650W should be more than enough.
And yes, you would need to change motherboard. Ryzen 5000 does NOT work on any 300 series motherboards (A320 - B350 - X370)

Charlie Groves reacted to Chris Pratt in Upgrade from 1060 6gb and i7 6700
Yeah. My point is don't ask for a GPU that pairs well with a 6700K; ask for one that will give you 1440p at 100fps+. Those are two different questions.
-
Charlie Groves reacted to Chris Pratt in Upgrade from 1060 6gb and i7 6700
Bottlenecks, and "pairing" in general, is only a concern for new builds, and even then, it's just a situation of being smart with your money. When you're talking about upgrades, you should focus purely on the performance you want. Are you wanting to game at 1440p at 120fps, for example? Then CPU he damned, you buy the graphics card that will give you that. If the CPU, then, holds you back, you can upgrade that as well, or just deal with the reduced perf until you do. Unless you're upgrading everything at once, only buying what pairs well with the rest of your current hardware is just a vicious cycle where nothing ever really gets upgraded, and will ironically cost you far more in the long run as you keep swapping out $300 cards to keep up, when a single $500 card would have served you for the long run.

if you cannot wait an extreme amount of time the 3070 seems to be good price to "nvidia certified" peformance, though i would still wait and have a look what peformance you can get from it (from someone that isnt the person who wants you to buy it) before i clicked buy

Charlie Groves reacted to Fasauceome in Upgrade from 1060 6gb and i7 6700
waiting at the very least will give you the same performance for a lower price, I recommend it

Charlie Groves reacted to Slottr in High refresh rate monitor for minimal gaming?
If you really enjoy the smoothness of high refresh rate, sure why not.
Aside from that There isn't really much of a point

Charlie Groves reacted to Thirdgen89GTA in Native desktop app vs. browser tab
For Gmail, you are just running a specialized chrome instance and not a true "application".
In fact many applications that run as apps are really just specialized browsers. Plex Media Player and Tidal are two that come to mind.

You shouldn't see a noticeable bottleneck in gaming
4 - 4.5 ghz should be possible
