Sandro Linux reacted to RockSolid1106 in VPN Providers in India to be mandated to store user data for upto 5 years
Summary
The Indian Government has announced a new policy, which mandates VPN Providers in India to log user data(names, email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses) for upto 5 years. This policy aims to give more power to CERT-in(Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) which is responsible for monitoring cyber crimes. This policy will be enforced from June 27. This of course has raised concerns regarding privacy.
Quotes
All information that is mandated to be stored by companies according to CERT-in:
My thoughts
I smell some privacy issues here.. Of course, the idea of using a VPN to protect your privacy is a bad one in the first place, but this seems to make it even worse. I personally don't like how the Indian Government is not giving an F about its citizens' privacy. There was this previously too:
They just seem to be giving users less and less control over their privacy and data. I understand they're doing it to help them investigate cyber crimes and other stuff, but to me this is just an invasion of people's privacy. Data breaches happen all the time, and that would be quite some personal information that would be leaked if that happened.
Would be interesting to see what you guys think.

Sandro Linux reacted to SignatureSigner in Open Source Extension Re-Enables YouTube Dislike Counter Reporting
I thought of this when I first heard of the removal of the dislike button.
I think its a great idea (at least in theory)
My idea was add the button/count back with an extension and have the extension keep track of the dislikes using the extension.
You could even add a 'why people disliked this section' where users could select why they disliked it (a list of reasons)
anyone with the extension can see the dislikes by the other people with it. (requires a user base tho)
I should make this...

Sandro Linux reacted to BloodAsp in Open Source Extension Re-Enables YouTube Dislike Counter Reporting
Summary
The browser extension for the time being re-enables the display of YouTube dislike counts, and when the API stops reporting this information, it will draw information from the channel to take an educated guess at it's ratios, or allow the creator to opt in to reporting their statistics.
My thoughts
This is important to me as it will restore functionality that the greater majority of youtube's community has vocally pushed against. The methods of interpreting future videos dislike ratios is of slight concern to me, but that is likely the best solution to the unfortunate circumstance youtube has put themselves in.

Sandro Linux reacted to williamcll in Taking flight - Twitter CTO Parag Agrawal will replace Jack Dorsey as CEO
After a year of trying to oust the CEO, Jack Dorsey is finally stepping down from twitter and the CTO will take his place. This has caused waves on the stock market and NASDAQ has stopped trading with twitter as of the time of this writing.
Quotes
My thoughts
I doubt a change in leadership would change how twitter functions, or if they did, only more questionably poor decisions. Gonna be interesting for stockholder though.

Sandro Linux got a reaction from thechinchinsong in The Xbox Series S Was Black Friday's Best Selling Console
Summary
According to data from Adobe Digital Economy Index, the Xbox Series S was Black Friday’s most popular console. Adobe got this data from over 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail sites.
Quotes
My thoughts
I think this story shows how people are increasingly buying cheaper consoles and how mass supply shortages are just increasing this trend. Also, it is clear many people either can't afford, or don't need a high end console right now and how Microsoft took advantage of this with the 300 price of the Xbox Series S(whether it was inadvertently or advertently).

Sandro Linux got a reaction from VectorTech in Didi pulled from app stores in China after suspension order
Summary
The Chinese Goverment has ordered app stores to remove Didi (a ride hailing app) and has made Didi stop new user registration. The CPC are doing this over "national security concerns" and said Didi need to do more to ensure safety of its users information.
Quotes
My thoughts
I think that the Chinese goverment maybe doing this because of the IPO but there maybe actual data protection concerns so this might be a good thing.

Sandro Linux reacted to LloydLynx in What is your favourite version of windows?
Favorite in terms of looks is Vista, but 7 I like best for usability. Vista was gorgeous and still is today. But my favorites are the pre-internet Windows versions because every Windows is closed source and basically a blackbox which you have no idea what it's really doing.

Sandro Linux reacted to Kilrah in What is your favourite version of windows?
Or the opposite...
Been playing with 98SE on an old machine these past weeks and was promptly reminded of how often it would break/crash.
XP runs smooth, 7 was fine too, but for actual usability and stability nowadays definitely Win10 for me.

Sandro Linux reacted to MotionFlex in How can I open a web page when someone installs my firefox extension?
Essentially, what guitargirl15 said. You will also want to check out: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Add-ons/WebExtensions/API/runtime/onInstalled. This event handler can be added to your background page, and will fire whenever a user install/update your extension.
Something like this:
browser.runtime.onInstalled.addListener(details => { if(details.reason == "install") { browser.tabs.create({ url: "https://example.com" //Your page goes here }); } });
You can also store the page inside your extension and use:
browser.runtime.getURL("/path/to/mywebpage.html") to get a URL for it.
