Not completely tech, but I thought it was interesting nontheless after my recent dive in audio equipment. It is already hypothesized, and to certain extents known, that our brain does a lot of inter and extrapolation when it comes to our senses. We can't process all the information we receive in real time, so we make certain assumptions about how the world around us looks, for example, and how it will look in a moment. The general idea behind it is that we respond to differences rather than constantly actually processing what we perceive. Think of the gorilla walking through the basketball court. The other day I found an article that explores this in the context of audio.

    Article breakdown:

TL;DR Our brain seemingly doesn't store the (full) truth, but makes a prediction* and reacts based on how much the observed world deviates from what we expect very early on in our "signal processing chain".
[Edit] *important point that I forgot to add here: this prediction changes depending on the rules we are told the truth abides by.

Why am I posting this here? I think it's an interesting discovery. This study does not imply that we hear what we want to hear, but rather that we use what we think of as the truth as a reference for experiences. I think it would be interesting (if that were somehow possible) to see if this also correlates with excitement/disappointment in upgrades due to reviews, for example. What we read or are told our new gear will do, will change our truth and thus how we experience that new piece of gear when we use it for the first time. The more it deviates, the stronger our brains respond and so potentially the more/less excited/disappointed we are!

Finally I think it shows the value of blind testing as that makes it much harder to form a personalized truth.

Any thoughts from other people? Have you ever tried a blind test of your equipment and maybe found differences between them or a different ranking you didn't expect to find at first?

I recently acquired a turn table and a whole Cabinet  from a repo house, and they are straight from the 70's I genuine love listening to older genres on that, but that's a once in a while thing. it allows me to go back in time to that era and feel like I am part of that time, you just can't get that with digital man.
    I thought I would share 🙂

i think the next chipset should be removed from the equation, doesn't really matter to the performance, next gen will be first gen ddr5 and that'll come with a new set of problems.

Yeah, many programs tend to prefer CUDA and stuff so choose based on that if that's your primary use case.

Also of course if you have a personal experience with one or the other, it's also a personal choice

Steeve at Gamer's Nexus is going to test the heck out of Big Navi and the rest of the RTX 3***. Just watch him and he will lay out the best use case for each cards. Then decide.

Chances are AMD will undercut nvidia with their pricing as always and potentially offer better value early on, until nvidia lowers their prices, or start to spit super and ti everywhere, making all their skews difficult to understand. From what I can recall, correct me if I'm wrong, but usually AMD cards do better at workstation tasks than nvidia equivalents, but can falter in gaming sometimes, especially due to drivers.

    No?

ATI was founded a decent number of years before Nvidia. In other words they havent been in the game longer.

How do you spec 2 different architectures exactly the same?

    Because you cant.

    It depends.

The feature is called "Direct Storage", as @RadiatingLight mentioned above. The Nvidia implementation of this Microsoft API is called "RTX IO".

As others have said, until games actually use this feature (much less require it), it'll probably take some time, so you should be good with a "slower" SSD for the time being.

We really don't know. Its gonna be years before games start to use this if I had to make a guess, and probably a few more years before games start to require it.

I would't worry about this when setting up a pc now, as its probably gonna be so far out, you may need anouther ssd anyways.

    Yea definitely wait and check.
For the most part, every board I suggested is around 200 bucks and can handle even the 3950x easily.
Those overkill boards try to do everything and as mentioned above, their vrm is absolutely overkill.

Snowmnason reacted to Haro in Motherboards are confusing. Just need help considering which one.
Unless you're into heavy overclocking and ln2. Don't consider it.

    It's an XDPE132G5C and 14 TDA21472'S.
If I recall correctly, IR35201 and 6 TDA21472's doubled. But I could be wrong on that one.
Wait for zen 3 first then and then decide which board you want to get.
All of these boards are overkill in pretty much every way.
And you could just consider a normal casual consumer board that's also decent.
As for b550, the tomahawk and the mortar and the aorus pro and the steel legend and the a pro are pretty good.
And as for x570, the tomahawk and the tuf are pretty good.

One of the crappiest x570 boards that you can get.
    It's pretty shit sadly.

chances are you wont need much more than a budget x570 thats a fraction of the cost of these flagship boards. you might not even x570, a budget b550 could be sufficient. since you don't plan on overclocking an a520 could be all you really need. the tier list is mostly based on enthusiast features like vrm quality, memory overclocking performance, and that sorta thing. id check out some budget mobo lineups and see if boards in the <$200 range appeal to you and have the features youre looking for. if youre set on x570 the asus tuf x570 or msi gaming plus x570 are great all-around boards with nice price tags.

If super/ti/titan come out will depend on amd.  If big navi has lots of bugs or issues or lower then expected performance, nvidia would likley not do much else.
If amd unveils some secret 6990 that can beat the 3090, 48 gig ram titan 3000 will be announced as soon as nvidia can rush it.
I'm guessing amd will do well enough to be competitive, but not take top card slot forcing a titan release above 3090.

3090 is faster then 3080, more cores, but 3080 should be plenty unless you are doing very heavy workloads and/or need the ram.  Sort of like ryzen 3950 vs threadripper 3960, faster if you need that many cores, but just more expensive with unused threads for most uses.

If you really need vram, 3090 is worth it, but that is not common.  If you would take radeon vii to rx 5700xt since 8gb won't cut it, go 3090.  Otherwise 3080 and leaving extra money in bank for future upgrade should work out better.  Even if you would need the extra ram, waiting for the 20gb 3080 might be good idea.

    1. No one know for sure but there's a leak of 3080ti so that might came out later (although leak thus far had been almost entirely inaccurate except for the founder design.) I personally think that it's more likely for us to have the 3070ti/Super as there's a price gap between 500 and 700 buck card which is something I expect them to fill later.

    2. No, unless you're game developer (or doing something else with your GPU that isn't gaming), 3090 is the new RTX Titan. I don't think they are even that faster than 3080 (judging from what Jensen mentioned yesterday), they just have a lot more VRAM. Got to wait for the 3rd party test but I don't think it's something that you will be taking full advantage off either as a gamer or video editer.

Snowmnason reacted to Donut417 in Modem Recommendations
Because fiber doesn’t use a modem it uses an optical converter, which can go by many names. Those haven’t come to the consumer equipment side yet. I don’t expect them to as fiber is a bit of a confusing standard. As a result with Fiber you can’t change out the ISP equipment. With the exception of the router if your ISP doesn’t use any type of combo device.

Save your money. There is little point in getting a slower card (2060) or barely faster card (2070)
