I really can't wait for gaming to be available on Linux.

    After that, cya Windows.

Really Microsoft? Really? Only reason I stayed with Windows was because Pro version didn't require this assholery. If they'll enforce this crap I'll seriously go with Linux full on. I've done it once when they announced this shit and I'll do it again. This time for good. This is just beyond moronic. I don't want a god damn online account. It was stupid back in Windows 8 days when shit literally locked you out of local system if internet connection was not working and it's still stupid today.

I can't describe the idiocy I had to go through installing Windows 11 on laptop because it demanded account registration during install but I couldn't because dumb OS somehow couldn't install WLAN driver. Which never happened before, even Linux fixed this shit few months ago.

    Good question Red.

    Summary
Now that Windows 11's first major post-release update has been issued, Microsoft has started testing a huge collection of new features, UI changes, and redesigned apps in the latest Windows Insider preview for Dev channel users. But tucked away toward the bottom of the changelog is one unwelcome addition: like the Home edition of Windows 11, the Pro version will now require an Internet connection and a Microsoft account during setup.

    My thoughts
Welp, Microsoft's going to be requiring Internet access to install windows 11 for pro as well. What are my thoughts? If I weren't so polite, I'd say something along the lines of Linus Torvald's nvidia f-bomb, but since I'm Polite, I'll say this: I hope that whoever thought of this idea and everyone who approved this steps on a lego barefoot. Yea, I think that should convey my feelings pretty well. Oh and this is going to be far worse for VM-users who'll have to sign in everytime they install windows. Thankfully, it won't affect currently installed versions of windows 11 pro, but this is nonetheless deeply unwelcome. I should also point out that a lot of features from the dev channel don't make it to final release, and for Microsoft's sake, I hope this "feature" doesn't.

Because steam is a windows app/store, of which it is 1 of many potential ones.

While Apple is the sole owner, regulator, and enforcer on THEIR, platform

Not forgetting do you think that if a game dev has a game and does not want to sell their app/game trough steam, that they have no other option?
they can just sell it trough the many other stores "EPIC games, GOG games, even their own website"
and then they do not have to give Steam a single dime, because they did not sell trough STEAM.

if they do it trough their own website, they get 100% of all the profit. made from sales, not having to give a single time to anyone.

I don't see this as any response to MS' recent move. These deals don't happen overnight, and would have been in discussion for some time. That the4e both happen to announce at similar times I think is just coincidence.

I'm also not keen on fewer companies controlling more and more of the gaming space.

Gaming should be as decentralized as possible,
I don't want the industry to become an oligarchy.
Some companies in the industry have too much power in their hands.

All it really needs is mechanical protection. As long as nothing falls on it and bends the pins, it will be fine.

If you're really worried, cut out a little piece of cardboard and tape it on top of the hold-down clamp, or get a plastic socket cover off eBay for a couple bucks.

Pc6777 reacted to RONOTHAN## in How bad is it to store an Intel mobo without socket cover?
I mean, it's probably fine, dust and human error is your what's likely to cause error, and the socket cover just prevents both of those things from happening. I'd cut a piece of paper to fit into the socket, that way you don't have to worry about dust, just make sure you don't do anything to the socket.

But HDDs(even smr) are generally good at storing data even if there is a power loss, and only data that is being copied to the drive is at risk. I have had many a system lose power and have no noticable data loss or corruption.

Well I don't think amd has this problem, could always go team red, kinda dumb how drivers get tied to your Ms account and windows store, very uneccerry. But most people won't notice or care so they know they will be able to get away with it and only loose virtually zero market share, doing their little deals with MS and tieing driver features and control panels to online accounts.

Probably a Microsoft thing, they've been pushing things in this direction for a while. Separating out the driver part and the associated software like control panel is delivered by MS store.

Pc6777 got a reaction from Estiar in is it worth upgrading from ad 500x?
I use the audiotechnica ad 500xs for music and gaming, but i only play single player games so I don't care about hearing footsteps. I like them, definitely more comfortable than my m50s. is there anything open back in the 200ish diollar range that sounds significantly better than the ad 500xs for music? i use a fosi audio dam/amp and listen to mostly mp3s that are 256-320 kbs. Im not going to upgrade if i will have a hard time telling in a blind test or if i can just eq my pair to sound the same as a more expensive pair, i need to hear a big difference, and i don't care for bass much so an upgrade in bass isnt a priority, just mids/highs. also, i do have a dac/amp but i still want all my headphones to be usable with onboard/motherboard audio just in case, so i dont want something that requires a dac/amp to work properly.

the 10th gen i3 is a good value its only like 100 dollars, but if your budget allows it i would go for 6 or 8 cores with hyperthreading for the future. but if you wanted an uber cheap upgrade, you can get a refurb board that works with 10th gen sold by newegg for 60 dollars, and a 10th gen i3 for 100.

an i5 is like 70-115 dollars more depdning on the model, so 160 vs 230-250ish, but the i5 will last longer and you wont have to upgrade again in the immediate future

So the chance of errors is low, and the chance the error will cause data corruption is even lower? That's good news I guess, but a company with 100s of servers and decades of operation I guess you are bound to have an error at some point. Even one but could hurt important data or make something unusable tho.

i have the unfortunate feeling that adobe and others will require people to use the store when installing their apps and won't allow for alternative ways to install said app
i would not be surprised to see visual studio be available only via the store, no more installer so people who use wine can't use it anymore.
considering they are building their own linux distro and are HEAVILY pushing linux as an alternative to windows for gaming. it doesn't seem likely since they are building their own ecosystem. it might happen but with how Microsoft has treated valve in the past, ya know with the threat of not allowing steam to run on windows (i couldn't find the tech news post about it but if ya google it you might find an article talking about it), it's very unlikely that it will.

This is really about optics more than anything. This doesn't really confer many advantages over running the EGS separately. Microsoft wants to pretend it's a champion of openness while paradoxically tightening control over Windows app distribution. A bit like Google's 2010-era "Android is open! Open open open!" facade — sounds good on the surface, falls apart under closer inspection.

    16 gigs ddr4-60

    500 gig ssd-50
Might skip the SSD tho and reuse 120 gig SSD and HDD. Not that I think about it, an i5 would only add 60 dollars to the overall cost and make it a much better PC, any way to spend less and get more? Would it be worth going for a used 8th/9th gen cpu or Ryzen?
I already have a cpu cooler I can donate to this build
