I have an acer laptop with 8gb ram installed, but for some reason it only shows 3.2 gb usable. I am running 64 bit windows 10. I've tried unchecking the boxes in msconfig to no avail, and I tried enabling memory remapping in my BIOS, but that setting isn't present in the BIOS on this laptop. I have swapped the two 4gb sticks in the motherboard which didn't fix the problem either, so I guess it is possible that I have a faulty mobo which in that case there isn't really a solution to the problem.
