  1. I just logged on to post the same thing. Through all of the fire and flames all over the place right now, I’m really glad to see that someone else beat me to it. I am worried for the health and well-being of every stakeholder in this - from people outside LMG to the wider LMG team to the people at the core of all this, including Linus himself. This is scary and I hope it ends soon and on a positive note and that nobody gets hurt.
  2. Personally, I think this is a fantastic initial response to everything. And it’s awesome to see so many of the humans behind the wheel, including the new faces too! Can’t wait to see more of Terran and Gary in the future. So reassuring to see Yvonne with her real talk, too. Good luck and all the best, LMG.
  3. I think a lot of people, GN included, would argue that LMG and GN are no longer ‘peers‘ given the sheer size of LMG’s operation.
  4. Well referenced. I think it’s totally right that LMG should be treated like a corporate, too While we’re quoting what people have previously said, I think it’s important to highlight two things that Linus himself said on WAN on last week (August 11, 2023). So don’t be surprised when they get pointed out. The community expects better. The community deserves better. Even the team at LMG deserves better. In that staff interview people literally said they weren’t proud of their work. That’s not fair. That’s not fulfilling. Where’s the motivation in that? You’re damn right. Once the BL situation is resolved, per their demands for compensation, LMG should absolutely address all of this either on WAN or in a separate video, or at least somewhere like the forum or subreddit. Own it all. Apologise. Stand up to the plate and fess up in the same way the community has grown to expect over the years. Lay out what you’re going to do and move on. Do better. Like before I still have a lot of admiration for the work that LMG does and what it contributes to the tech space. I know I am not alone when I say I hope they are able to learn from this and move forward in the best way that suits everybody. You just know all of this will have been creating waves within the business, affecting people’s morale and mental health. I sincerely hope everybody on the team at LMG are able to move forward in a positive way and that all of this blows over nicely.
  5. Can anyone help me diagnose these spots? Screenshot is of Hell Let Loose on full epic settings @ 1920x1080. Running a Ryzen 5 3600 w/ RX 5700XT. It's not something I've been able to replicate in other games, so I figure it's either I'm not running good enough parts or the game settings need tweaking? I've done some reading up on what different game settings mean and have played around with each one at a time, but I haven't been able to get rid of them or understand why they're there. Stretched: H
  6. Post build update My stuff arrived around lunchtime on Wednesday and by that point I hadn't yet torn down my old system so I started there. I did that first as I would be recycling parts from that build - namely the PSU and storage. It all went totally smooth for my first build, with just a little bit of a tense moment when the screws at the corners of the stock CPU cooler weren't quite matching up with the holes on the board. All good in the end though, just took it slowly as recommended anyway - screwing down each opposite corner very slightly each time. In practice, the actual build itself was just as straight forward as everybody makes out to be and I for one thoroughly enjoyed it. A great little lockdown project indeed. Anyway, I'm super pleased with the result! Here's a potato shot on my crappy phone camera. And a cheeky vid of the glass peel: Next steps will be as follows, largely driven by how much I can save while I'm furloughed on a lower salary: Upgrading the storage as I'm pretty maxed out right now. My board supports M.2 NVMe, so that's probably the way I'll go if the Crucial P1 1TB stays at around £100. Replacing the stock AMD CPU cooler. It's loud as hell and real bugbear. I already had my eyes on the Noctua NH-U12S (in black), but I just saw be quiet! dropped the Pure Rock 2, also in black, for roughly half the price. Something to think about. Cable management. Purely aesthetic, sure, but I love what the modmesh extension kits (like this one) do for tidiness. Very clean in comparison to how I've left it, plus I'd be able to get some more white in there to go with my LEDs. Mmaaaaaaaybe upgrade the two exhaust fans to RGB, but that's at the bottom of the list ofc.
  7. I picked the case based on a combo of aesthetics, features I wanted, and also largely influenced by the reviews I read/watched - the strong review by GN being one. Thanks very much @icase81 That kind of perspective really helps me out a lot. I'm totally fine with being a few years behind if I can still mean run the games I play at a far better level than I do right now, while still getting value for money on "new" parts until then. I placed my order on Sunday and most of it is arriving tomorrow I ended up ordering the Ryzen 5 3600 from Amazon as it was the best price around, and I ordered the MB, GPU, case and memory from CCL - I've used them before so trust them and it was all in stock ready to ship asap. The prices were actually better than Amazon at the time of purchasing too - I realise that PartPicker flags the cheapest retailer based on a total price (incl. shipping), but what it doesn't take into account is the single shipping cost when you order more than 1 part from the same retailer... so actually I got a better deal overall. So, hopefully by the EOP tomorrow my new build will look like this: New Parts CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3600 MB - Gigabyte B450 AORUS ELITE AMD Case - Phanteks Eclipse P400A D-RGB GPU - Gigabyte Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING 8GB Memory - HyperX FURY RGB 16GB (2x 8GB) 3200MHz DDR4 Existing Parts WiFi - TP-Link Archer T6E 1300Mbps PCI Express WiFi PSU - XFX XTR Series 650W 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular Storage 1 - 120GB Samsung SSD 840 Series Storage 2 - 250GB Samsung SSD 840 Series Storage 3 - 1TB Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 SATA 3.5" Display - AOC 27 inch 144 Hz LED Gaming Monitor, 1 ms G2770PF In terms of future updates, I'll probably look toward storage first - I'd like a bigger SSD/M.2 given that I'm maxed already. For personal reference later, here are some visuals of the best balance between quality and performance I've been able to get for Hell Let Loose. Once I'm up and running and I've got it reinstalled, I'll post an update https://imgur.com/c4SyBVg https://imgur.com/3c1Myfh https://imgur.com/n0Xo2px @all - thanks for your input! Logging off to watch some build guides, mistakes not to make etc. H.
  8. I've gone and made some changes to try and bring the upfront cost down a bit. Switched out the Corsair LPX 16GB memory kit for an RGB kit, slightly lower MHz but the stuff I've read/watched says it's such a minimal difference in performance that the cheaper option is the better one Removed the M.2 storage from the pick list to bring the upfront cost down massively. I can get by for now with the SSDs and HDD that I have, and get this later on. I wanted to see if I could go for a cheaper RX 5700 XT, but reviews for the alternatives held me back. If anyone has a solid recommendation I'm all ears! I know it's only a month, but I'd love to get moving on this now while I'm furloughed from work and locked down at home with more time to game. Am I right in thinking that if I did jump the gun, I'd only be putting myself back 1 upgrade? If so, I'm okay with that. (this is on the basis that I'll probably look to make a £150-250 upgrade once every 1-2 years). If I wanted to, I could swap out a B450 for a B550 in a year or so, and the rest of those parts would still be compatible, right? @Rogerzz @icase81 @Herman Mcpootis @lee32uk - you guys have been helpful so far, what do you make of that? H.
  9. Just caught this video from Paul's Hardware where he mentions AMD having stated 60+ boards being in development right now, and that those boards should start to become available on June 16th. Promising for my impatient self! Crossing my fingers I can get this going straight away by then.
  10. Thanks @icase81, appreciate you taking the time to put it in a way I can better understand. Love this forum. When I apply all that to my own situation (budget and frequency of updates in mind) a B450 seems like a pretty solid choice right now, even with the B550 considered. I'll still mull it over though. Appreciate your time @Rogerzz, thanks again. How quickly do you think boards will be available come June 16th? Like I said before I can try to suppress the itch and wait a few weeks. Having taken everybody's recommendations into consideration then, and having watched a tonne of reviews online from LTT, GN and more, I've put together the below. For now, I've gone for a B450 which I may swap out for a B550 next month. No PSU listed since as I'm going to stick with my XFX XTR Series 650W 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular for now which, as per recs, is still good enough. The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated, two SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports are disabled. - Specs say there are 6 SATA 6.0 GB/s ports on that board. Is there any way to tell which 2 get disabled if using an M.2? Some physical dimension restrictions cannot (yet) be automatically checked, such as cpu cooler / RAM clearance with modules using tall heat spreaders. - I'm not sure which part this pertains to? H
  11. Thanks @Kilrah. In that case, what I'm taking away is that I need to learn the diff between render resolution and display resolution! H
  12. Please forgive the wording, I realise it changes everything (originally it was "Can I run.." which I think is a GPU question, right?) Basically, I have an AOC 27 inch 144 Hz LED 1ms G2770PF - I'm looking to build a new system but keeping the monitor as it's not that old and my budget doesn't stretch that far right now anyway. The GPU I am looking to move to is an RX 5700 XT, which supports 1440p. Specs on my monitor (link) cite a Maximum Resolution: 1920 x 1080@144 Hz, and there I have questions. Does this mean I won't see any option in-game to run at 1440p? If I do see the option and I enable it, what will happen? Will my monitor just scale down? Will I/most people notice? Thanks in advance, H
  13. So I've been reading up on various other threads here and watching videos from LTT, GN and many more and, at this point, I think I have flooded myself with so much information that now I am confused as to how I should approach the decision of waiting for the B550 or not. And yes, I kinda want something sooner - the lockdown ain't boding well for me and I need something to sink some time into! From what I make of it, the benefits of waiting for the B550 will be 1) support for Zen 3, and 2) PCIe 4.0. As far as Zen 3 goes, there aren't any indicators of price there yet as I realise they won't launch until much later this year... but maybe there is an upgrade possibility in the Ryzen 4000 series for me in the next few years. On the PCIe 4.0 front, I've seen a lot of people saying that there isn't really anything in my kind of price ranges using it yet, let alone pushing the limits of 3.0. As far as cons go, I noted in a GN video that even though B550 is launching on June 16, it'll be a few weeks more before manufacturers release those boards with their twists and takes on them... so I'm taking that to mean I won't be able to buy and build a new system until the last week of June, I think? I've also read that there are almost always BIOS issues with brand new boards in the early days right after launch. I'm not sure what that means in terms of recovering from that, though - i.e. whether it's something I can resolve myself by downloading an update somewhere. I guess I'm trying to make a decision based on how much I'd be shooting myself in the foot in the immediate years to come, based on the kind of money I have to play with. Rather than wait another 7 years to upgrade, I'd like to keep make updates to my new system every 1-2 years - probably one component at a time - and each time I'd probably only be looking at a £150-250 budget. Taking a different spin on it all, if I was to, say, go for a B450 (w/Ryzen 3600 and a RX 5700 XT) can anyone help me to better understand what kind of situation would have to arise in order for me to consider whether to (or absolutely have to) change up my board again? I might have this all wrong - as I say, I've been watching more than my level of knowledge/understanding in computer hardware can comprehend. Hopefully I can start to rectify that by lurking. I guess what I have trouble with is understanding the overlap between the longevity of different components, and what you buy/when you buy it and the impact that will have on your options further down the road. If you read all that, thank you. I appreciate the help.
  14. @Rogerzz So I just read on the AMD site that the X570 boards also have PCIe 4.0 support and Zen 3. That in mind, what's the reason for waiting for the B550? Is it price? Seen the X570 well over the £200 mark. *EDIT* I just caught a video about the X570 vs. B550 from GN where he answers my question! It will in fact be cheaper. Huzzah.
