KirbyTech reacted to hooraah in NAS or Fileserver?
Something isn't adding up.  4 users all simultaneously saving a 10mb file should be almost no load on the server, unless you have exactly 0 bytes left, or if one of the hard drives is failing.

I would start looking at some stats and see where the bottleneck on your current server is - is the throughput maxed?  disk i/o maxed?  sitting there idle?  If you copy a 1GB file to a file share, whats the transfer rate?

You definitely don't need a new server to the tune of 5K.  New hard drives at most.

things like plex aren't going to work because of many problems.
and i'm not talking about the tech stuff.
you are better off using a service like:
    http://tvforhotels.net/
    or
    https://www.dvdnowfreemovies.com/index.php
as they have done all of the hard work for you, always keep their library's up to date with new content, and don't require trial and error because it's be sorted out already
almost every hotel (and motel) in the world uses a system like this as it's easier then something like plex (and won't land them in legal trouble)
oh yea the rest of you, plex may be nice but they SPECIFICALLY SAY THAT IT'S NOT MEANT FOR COMMERCIAL USE!!!!
as stated here: https://www.plex.tv/en-au/about/privacy-legal/plex-terms-of-service/ at 1.2 General Plex Solution Grant.
this is to ensure that a commercial business (e.g our friend here) doesn't just load up plex on a couple of tvs and play copyrighted content.
your best option (that won't get you in trouble) is to use one of the services i provided as an example and get on with it

Price isn't so much a factor for me as I am using this setup for my business and the difference of a few $100 or even $1k is not a big deal if it allows me to get more done.

I have reconsidered the ThinkPad (no longer on sale) and going with an XPS 13 which I found a dock for $140 from Dell on Amazon. I am sure there are dongles that are cheaper just maybe not when I have to combine a bunch of them.

I am looking to have the short side on my left both because of my office space and it is nicer than the right since I am left handed. I will watch out on pre-built one though, ty.

lol that is not really an important question, most GPUS had DP/HDMI/DVI so you can pretty much use any gpu/monitor with each other, and if not adapters exist

There is no real way to know for sure, partly depends on your OS and tons of other things. When I calculate it, I generally go with SIZE/(SPEED*0.75)=TIME

The reason I said it would be good for those with 1 computer is that many here will expand beyond that as well as software licenses are on there too. I know Steam is a big software 'repo' of sorts but there are tons of other things I/we pay for and keeping track of those in a safe place that is off site is great.

You see one of the exact points behind this site, to save companies money on lost assets. There are a bunch of other reasons too but that list is long and would take me forever to type up correctly.

Haha that boat is not that expensive costs maybe $5k a year for the one in my profile pic. The others cost way more lol The money for the boats don't come from the site linked it comes from my MSP.

This server will have no HDDs if all goes as planned. I have a storage servers (15 x 10TB and 12 x 8TB) that handle everything, I am simply planning this server as an application and database host.

Not planning to run any RAID on this host, all data is backed going to be like the rest of my servers, backed up on the hour, 6 hour, 1 day, 1 week and 1 month marks, with a staggered retention so I never have more than 12 hourly, 8 x 6 hours, 7 days, 4 weeks and 3 months.

It would be great if we could get a simple button in the bottom right corner that is just an arrow and scroll to top. Wouldn't take much to do it but would make the site a lot better to use.

I am seriously surprised that this has never been implemented.

It's not up for discussion, it is either being done that way or not at all. Seems some people are hard of hearing... Everyone seems to be missing the point of the post.. Not sure why you(all) can't understand that in a work environment you don't always get your way. I can't do ESXi on bare metal because look above at my diagram you should be able to figure that part out... Need TWO instances of ESXi on the same host running on different subnets. This is not going to change, the software layout is not changing no matter what some person here says. Unless you want to fly in, speak to the person who told me to do it, and then get me a second identical server, it just isn't going to happen.

When GPU mining is not profitable anymore for the majority of people. That is the best and most honest answer you will get out of anyone. We simply don't know, you likely know about as much as us. Point being that GPU prices are always high when it is very profitable to mine.

RESOLVED It turned out to be the firewall (ufw) got changed somehow. I transferred files overnight which was working fine then come this morning I check on it and it was not working. I looked at logs to check and found nothing. Then I started looking for services or things that would only allow Nginx (on port 80). Turned out to be the damm filewall. I am not sure why it let me before but not after I transferred the files.
