  1. Dear Forums first of all my apologies for the vague post I started a couple of weeks ago. Turns out, if you update "older" X470 MSI boards to the newest BIOS version, the BIOS will get optically circumcised because of the limited storage space. So everything is normal (also found the options I was looking for eventually). Was hard to understand, coming from a 50$ B450 switching to a 130$ X470 board, how the BIOS could be so 2010ish.. I promise improvements. Thank for not chopping my head off.
  2. Dear Forums, I got a good deal on a MIS Carbon Pro X470 MB so I tried it. However, the BIOS/UEFI doesn't have any fan speed options nor MB RGB options etc.. Just updated to the newest version (released 6/12) in hope it would change something. But it still seems really "outdated". The interface looks really different to the most MSI BIOSes I have seen, which are kind of red-themed and much more advanced. Is this UEFI really supposed to look like this or am I missing something? 3. Hello, we just had a very similar topic 2 weeks ago. https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1180526-linux-for-an-old-laptop/ I think this forum does support a decent search function.
  4. glad that you found something, thanks for sharing
  5. @shea99 while I'm not your mate I still appreciate that you let us know how things went. Happy minecrafting with your family!
  6. hey, have you tried installing the package "firmware-realtek"?
  7. I'm sorry I was just kidding while having my after five beer. Dont you worry. I still love you
  8. Linux requires the user to know what he is doing. This is just it's character. Being more transparent also makes troubleshooting and customization much easier. Linux is limitless. You theoretically can do anything you want without restriction and without any costs. People are so familiar with windows-ish operating systems that they might find the idea of using the terminal intimidating. On the other hand, terminal usage is actually really just required for administrative tasks. Also on windows and mac, many administrative tasks are more easy / efficiently made by using the command line. Like if you set up PC for like your mom it will run _FOREVER_ without any trouble. So there is a more sharp line between administrative tasks and just the user layer. Also i feel packet managers make linux distribution to such a great tool that they are. It's simple _SECURE!_ and just so easy to use. Usually you only run into dependency issues if you have goofy updates / program versions what usually only happens if you install software _without_ the package manager. p.s. why would you want to run notepad++ on a linux system?
  9. That look like a nice tool to have. Is there something similar for AMD Cards?
  10. oh, I was not aware of that. I ran the benchmark on my inferior system just for fun: I got 1340 points yeeeeh - So yeah let's wait for the other guys and let them judge on your numbers, I'm not a good reference point About the kernel: I like your approach "it runs so I won't change it" So you got your reasons and I really respect that. Just an addition: afaik the kernel has no impact on your desktop environment. EDIT: I ran the Superposition Benchmark earlier today and I realized that there are public leader boards for comparison: https://benchmark.unigine.com/leaderboards/ Might make it easier to compare! Just search for your graphics card and see what it offers EDIT2: sorry for double post (fat fingers)

  12. glad that it worked for you! I don't know much about recent hardware and benchmark points, but just for the luls, I might run this benchmark myself later so that you can compare it to my inferior RX470 lol. Anyway, I realized you are running a kind of dated kernel. Is this intentional? You might get a performance boost if you run a more up to date kernel. Also, what driver are you using? Edit: Also, once again I'm not into hardware and benchmarking, but I think it is most common to run the benchmark on the a preset like let's say "extreme (HD)" so that everyone has a base to compare. Looks like you are running it on custom settings?
