  1. I did not notice the "dedicated server" rule till you reorganized things a little while ago lol.My own system before I posted had the RAID card and drives in my working/editing machine for over a year or two before I built my dedicated server. I do wonder why that rule is there and if that rule is excluding good systems.
  2. Never seen that "verizon ... crowded..." msg before. So I guess my problem is with Netflix lol. All I know is I hate having movie start out all blurry for the first few minutes even during non prime time. Providing a third of internet traffic during peek.. I'm sure they are bottlenecked at times... I just wish they provided a pre buffer option for times when you want better quality.
  3. looks like everything should fit fine. other thoughts. You don't need the "Z" to overclock. Unless you REALLY want those extra features. Save some money... add a 100GB+ SSD for ~$50 and it will make the rest of the system worthwhile... and not wonder why it's soooo slowww at times when the hard drive is thrashing after a few months. Build one for my friend recently. 4670K + ASUS H81M series
  4. Though I do not condone the "retard" calling part... or maybe something got lost in translation from your friend to you. But in case you still want to help while satisfying his stepdad... The Q6600 is still a decent performer for "family computer" purpose, and a SSD and Graphics card update (for youtube, hd, hd videos, games) would give it some more life, if the rest of the system doesn't have any issues. They can start with least a GPU and SSD... they are at least reusable should there be more upgrades. Just curious, Is it a $4000 system like the Dell XPS 720h2c? My brother has that (he got a couple refurb for $600 each. Overclocks to 3.2). Upgraded the graphics card and SSD as soon as he got it 3 years ago and it's runs just as fast as my own 2600K system, even when bf3 maxed out.
  5. Yeah, it was ghetto method, and the hyperlinks keep messing up, if not posted a certain way. I made some edits to the list to make similar OS and Storage type setup naming more structured. I was hoping there could be some standard chart and submission method the forum could use, and user self sort (can be useful many of the collections... e.g. build logs, build recommendations, etc). (At OCN they had iframe in external charts) Anyway.. I digress. The new chart looks awesome. BBCode for the links sure is a lot cleaner! correction and other thoughts - link of item #6 on first post "my build" goes to second post. - I think the noteworthy builds info might would feel at home at the second post.
  6. Can't stand the speakers and mic on my nexus 5. Going to sell and get the new "One".
  7. Can't stand the speakers and mic on my nexus 5. Going to sell and get the new "One".
  8. Exactly my feeling for forums in general... not very good for "colaborated document" or they should have some kind of wiki plugin. The SC plain text export looks pretty good. Better than the html, the no links. I couldn't help it... so I created this...
  9. 1994... guy on my floor buys brand new windows computer (micron pentium 100mhz?)... first thing after power button... "format c:\"
  10. Didn't mean to scare anybody. The evo does have lower idle power draw. I just upgraded my notebook with a msata M500 240GB, but I would have gotten the EVO for better power management if it weren't for the $50+ extra compared the the $120 crucial. I guess "firmware optimizations" would have been a less controversial and FUD term  .
  11. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7173/samsung-ssd-840-evo-review-120gb-250gb-500gb-750gb-1tb-models-tested ... TurboWrite: MLC Performance on a TLC Drive When MLC first came out, there was sandforce doing compression because the chips cannot write as fast as the SLC (much more expensive). Reasonable sacrifice given how crazy expensive SLC drives were back then. Now it's TLC's turn. Driving price down is good, and for consumer use is fine. The OP also mentioned uses for business trip. As an IT consultant... anything business/work involved should put reliability as priority. Ah, I never said there was anything "wrong" with the firmware, just not a fan of compensating ssd hardware performance with software (sandforce  ). Only time will tell if samsungs' new method is reliable. MLC is simply more mature. If there was an option for SLC for same price in a few years, I'd rather go for that.
  12. Although I own the Samsungs 830's and other older versions, I'm still skeptical of the recent models that use firmware trickery. In this case, I would go with old simple MLC of the Micron drive.
  13. These are the shape and fit of the ones I got (if that might be helpful to anybody) (white: original) in my case.. it's more comfortable and sounds better (IMHO... YMMV... )
  14. oops, my bad. fixed. Looks they they raised the price =(. I got them $20 shipped... How do the ebay ones look?
  15. Did you boot off the ISO? If your laptop is OEM win 8 there is no need for key entry. Does it come with 8 or 8.1? I guess if HP didn't install a boatload of stuff this time, cloning might not be bad. You might find this useful, if you run short of space because of the recovery partition: HP Recovery Media Manager
  16. I only have one M50 whites. Sorry for the confusion from the link. I got them last May, and it was pre-modded with the detachable cable for around $140. I guess they don't need to mod them anymore since the M50x is only a little bit more and with multiple cables included. The sound signature should be the same, as they didn't change the internals. Why change it when it's not broken? I recommend these Velvet cups, especially since these perfectly fit the M50's (probably custom ordered?). I'm surprised Audio-technica didn't make one. They now feel as comfortable as my sens HD650's. Planning to get this for the headband... yeah, the headband looks thick, but the cushion is thin and only touches the center of the head. As for sound quality... I didn't notice any, if any obvious changes, but certainly still no problem shaking my head when bass boost is maxed out on my fio e17. Actually, I couldn't stand more than half hour of listening before.. so if anything for me personally, I can have them tight and still feel comfortable and not sweaty after even long sittings.
  17. I don't know if they ship international, but this is where I got mine from (http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/ATH-M50x). I also got them pre-modded with detachable cables. Just recently got custom velor earpads from them (A MUST if you hate sweaty ears from plastic ear cups!) They been selling around $100 for a while, but looks like it had gone up again. Now they have the M50x... I got whites with black pads =). Will be adding more cushion to the headband.
  18. Your better off re-installing. Besides, for win 8 and OEM computers that comes with win 8, there's no need for key and activation now. It's build into the bios. Burn (or put on a usb stick or external HD) the win8 iso file downloaded from microsoft and boot off the disk. HP installs are junk anyway, and takes up a lot of space. The recovery is useless, since win 8 already has that built in. All it does it add on all the extra adds and apps (in both the desktop and touch interface!)
  19. I upgraded from 10TB to 24TB... does that count? Hardware CPU: Intel Xeon E3 1230v2 (ivy bridge) MB: Supermicro X9SCM-F-O HS: Stock Intel RAM: 32GB DDR3 1600 ECC (Kingston) PSU: Corsair AX750 Case: LIAN LI PC-V700X hotSwap: 2 x iStarUSA BPN-DE340SS RAID: Areca 1880i + BBU SSD: Intel 330 160GB SSD HDD : 6x 4TB WD REDS (RAID 6)
  20. There's also Asus VivoTab Note 8 Here's a good comparison video. If you can pull some strings to get a more funds... the Thinkpad 8 would be a better longer term investment. I helped my sister get the Thinkpad 8. The Thinkpad 8 has microhdmi out, 64GB , the 1920 x 1200 screen is crisp and bright. also the non win8 pro edition comes with office 2013 free (then again office 365 is under $2/mo for students). Surprisingly quick. If you plan to get the Dell, get the 32GB. A few extra bucks goes a long way. Also note, these tablets come with only 2GB ram. Virtuabox uses up all ram the VM is given... so that might be a consideration. Other thoughts: Got my nephew a thinkpad twist, since it's touchscreen, as well as easily alternate boot. Comes with two drives (7mm HDD and 24GB msata, oddly not advertised)... one I installed OSX maverick (because he had a class that did ios app... no way I'm getting a mac just for that!), and other I replaced with SSD. Look in the lenovo outlet and you can find one around the price of a thinkpad 8. It's a little more heftier than a tablet, but it's much more versatile. Not sure also about alternate booting for tablets.. I'm sure there's hacks, but not the standard plug and play for laptops.
  21. Arduino, Begalbone, but the Intel Galileo Development Board... that's the closest you can run x86 and the design is open source... meaning the the schematics is up for grabs, and change as you like... like linux. ... any more than that... good luck
  22. Hard to say... wired? wireless? Maybe check your ip configuration before and after iscsi. Or try another network adapter? Try pinging a website (ie, google.com), and also your router during the "internet down" time.
  23. I guess it has the do with the permissions in windows for applications and network drives. For Steam games, it seem to work fine over network share... I just copied my steam folder to the network and ran it, and it worked fine. overworked router? I use my iSCSI through a separate GB switch
  24. I'd be surprised any current games would be slowed much by a Gigabit network, even with all the overhead of standard network shares (not iscsi).. but I'll have to try it out one of these days out of curiosity. I would prefer a non-iscsi setup since you can easily share/unshare. Steam games can just be copied/moved to new location. Same with Origin games. There are some simple steps I can't remember off the top of my head. Don't know about other games outside of these game managers. I had Batman AC separate and it just made me re-activate at worse.
