andyGstl reacted to Electronics Wizardy in Hard drive expansion enclosure
Many people have done this. Lots of guides like this one https://forums.serverbuilds.net/t/guide-direct-attached-storage-das-add-up-to-16-3-5-drive-bays-to-an-existing-server-for-less-than-300/136/4

andyGstl reacted to manikyath in Popping and whispy sound from mouse
i assume (mind you: assume) that it is interference coming from your GPU, that is messing with the audio circuitry on your motherboard. it's a pretty common thing on the microphone signal of gaming builds. (microphone is a very low amplitude signal, so it is very sensitive for interference.)
what i've done in my build to reduce the interference from my GPU, is i've put a sandwich of ducktape and tin foil (ducktape to avoid shorts, ofcourse) over the audio section of my motherboard, as sort of a crude shield. and it seems quite effective.

just for the sake of completeness:
- is the mouse plugged in the front or back USB?
- do you hear the noises come from your computer (as in, coming from the inside of the case) or do they come out of the speakers/headset?
- in case it's coming from the speakers, does software volume control (the slider in windows) also affect the volume of the noises?
EDIT: - in case it's coming from the speakers, are they plugged into the front or rear 3.5mm jack or usb?
- could you list the motherboard and GPU used, as well as which slot you plugged the GPU into (presumable the topmost x16 slot)

Do you have a dedicated sound card or is it integrated? Either way I'd update my sound card drivers from the manufacturers website. If that doesn't help it kind of sound like a frequency problem. I didn't know that about SSD's. Thank you for that. I'm definitely looking into a RAID 1 array now. I don't feel comfortable using the cloud....just doesn't sit well with me.

andyGstl reacted to svmlegacy in New build help
M.2 and 2.5" are two different form factors. The 2.5" will always be SATA, while the M.2 could be NVMe (Which has certain benefits for accessing many small files).
Another thing to note, as this is a work computer, is that if, for any reason, the HDD/SSD would fail, the SSD may not be recoverable, while HDD's typically give warning, and can usually be recovered. If the data is mission critical, consider a RAID 1 array to protect it, unless you use a cloud backing.

What kind of calculations are you doing in Excel? Macro's? For the most part, Excel only uses a single core, so clockspeed is much more important than core count, to you.
8 GB of RAM is really the minimum nowadays for smooth operation, try to swing 16 if possible, Chrome/Firefox will thank you.
For high monitor counts, you will want a dedicated GPU.
AMD's AM4 platform will offer the best upgradability for future upgrades, and generally offers good value, particularly for higher core count chips.
And don't cheap out on the PSU. Prefer a lower wattage unit from a high quality line, rather than high wattage of lower quality.

Whether the virus could or could not spread via a package, I won't discuss that.
Let's just be adults about this and look at this from another way.
Maybe your friend is also a human, who can make his own decisions. Perhaps he does not want a new phone and would rather spend the money in another way. He knows you are passionate about this and so he thought of an excuse so you would leave the subject alone.
Or maybe he just does not have the money for such a luxury device at the moment and does not want to say that?
I don't know this person and could not know what drove him to this decision.. But maybe you don't know his full story too and are just trying to make a purchasing decision for someone else now/
It sounds to me like you want him to get a new phone, more than he perhaps wants/needs this phone.
Don't 'bomb him with actual facts' and leave it alone.
Let this person make their own financial decisions.

Thanks! I've had a slight bias with ebay when ordering any tech (I deal a lot with concert audio and home audio), but I'll definitely go through ebay. Thanks for sending the link!

Oh holy hell! I haven't laughed that hard in a long time!! Thank you for that. Anything tech I get is from Micro Center, but they're out. They're kind of close to me.

It's not odd at all.
Pretty much all Logitech and Microsoft webcams are out of stock and on back order at all retailers over here.
Only ones available are dubious quality Chinese ones with long delivery times.
Working from home and isolation has seen demand skyrocket.

andyGstl reacted to nox_ in Linus tech Webcams?
In my location there aren't any shortages like that. Big stores, maybe, smaller tech stores (at least where I live) have a pretty decent stock, on amazon I see there are many shortages and shipping delays.
Are there any smaller local tech stores near you? I got a good webcam from a small tech store in my town, bigger ones are apparently out of stock and I forgot about those shipping delays when buying from amazon these days.
On a funny side of things amazon are kinda odd these days when it comes to shipping :

andyGstl got a reaction from Meowster in Business Computers
Awesome, thanks! I appreciate the advice. I have thought about possibly building a minimalist computer to do what I need to do, but I'll have to see how buying vs. building plays out financially. I hope everybody is staying healthy! My work space is going to be insane when I get it all finished and setup with the new computer.

Oh, important clarification - the Short Circuit videos I shot outside had a Black Magic Cinema Camera 2.5k as the secondary angle.

In addition to what everyone else has said, I would recommend 16GB of ram if you plan on having the machine a long time (4+ years) or if you usually have a lot of browser tabs open. Otherwise, 8GB will do. Very large excel sheets can also consume a lot of ram.
Also make sure whether you build or buy you have an SSD. Sometimes modern cheaper business computers still have HDDs or SSHDs which will make your computer feel very slow.

An old dell optiplex with a GT 710, for multi monitor support and more ports...
-
andyGstl reacted to Meowster in Business Computers
A Dell Optiplex with a Core i3 or i5 should do fine. But they can only output 2 monitors. Apart from that, it should suit you perfectly. They are also very cheap nowadays. Since all you will be doing is spreadsheets a Core i3 is all you basically need. If you need you can always throw in a discreet GPU which will increase graphics performance and quality
