what will happen if I never activate it?

I don't have a product key for that, and Ive been told that if its not activated within 30 days it'll shut down every hour until you activate it. What should I do?

It does not have the option for "I don't have a product key"

I did this and now it says "The upgrade options isn't available if you start your computer using Windows installation media. If a copy of windows is already installed on the computer and you want to upgrade, remove the installation media and restart your computer. After windows has started normally insert the installtion media and run windows setup." What does this mean?

I inherited the custom built pc I don't think there was one with system when he made it.

I'm new to this and completely lost, when I try to upgrade my unactivated windows 8.1 to windows 10 from the Microsoft media installation tool it won't let me proceed without entering a product key. Everywhere online when try to search it has no mention of this step and says I do not need a product key and I could use windows 10 for free. I apologize for probably sounding like an idiot new to this and been pulling my hair out due to the fact that my windows 8.1 will end it less than 30 days without this fix. I appreciate any help you guys could give.
