  1. It's been a while but thought I'd drop an update. I repasted the laptop again today using Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut on the CPU and GPU, as well as repasting the VRMs with K5 Pro. I haven't gotten any fps drops yet, and the temps don't go above 80c now!
  2. Unfortunately, that didn't fix the problem either... I might just get some K5 Pro and replace the paste on the VRMs... Someone on reddit also suggested my use of Arctic MX-5 on the CPU and GPU was a bad choice. Any opinions?
  3. That is not a quality power supply and likely could be the culprit here. And even if it isn't, it definitely should be replaced with a quality one asap. Generally speaking, if there's one thing you do not cheap out on in a computer, it is the power supply. For the moment I'd definitely go back to your old graphics card before you damage your new one permanently. When shopping for a new PSU try to stick to known brands like Corsair, EVGA, Cooler Master, NZXT, ThermalTake etc. Make sure it is at least 80 Plus Bronze certified, and with your beefy GTX 980, try and go for at least 500-600w.
  4. What PSU are you using? Did you install the drivers for the new GPU? And what graphics card were you using before? If your old one was an AMD one, did you fully uninstall the old ones? I'd start off with using Display Driver Uninstaller (Google it) and then install the Nvidia drivers again.
  5. Just played AC for a bit and took screenshots from HWInfo. CPU Voltage looks like it stays constant at around 0.925v. Meanwhile the GPU voltage tops out at 0.95v, then goes down to around 0.688v and stays around there, sometimes hovering into a low 0.7v's. (Not reflected on the screenshot as took that after I already quit the game.) Do these voltages suggest anything to you?
  6. The G14 is known to not have much lee way in terms of space to be able to fit a thermal pad. The K5 Pro seems to be a stickier paste than most and so stays in place. I think LTT even had a video on it, but it’s also what everyone recommends to use for the VRMs with this laptop. Do you know if there is a way for me to check its definitely the VRMs which are over heating?
  7. I was cross posting with reddit on the G14 subreddit so used Imgur. Apologies. Yeah, the cooling is shared between the two. In principle the laptop should not have a problem handling Assasins Creed... I’ll try playing around with the GPU tdp when I get home and report back. I did notice occasional fps drops in Valorant before but attributed it to the laptop just having a moment. I might have to give repasting the VRMs a try. Issue being the K5 Pro paste is difficult to source where I live and might take a bit of time for shipping. Unless there are some alternatives you know of?
  8. I've owned an Asus Zephyrus G14 from 2020 with a Ryzen 7 4800HS and GTX 1660 Ti for nearly two years now. I haven't been playing any demanding games in the past few months, but installed AC: Origins recently and after 5 or so minutes of gameplay my FPS dropped to about 15 from 90+. After some investigating, I've figured out that it is thermal throttling. Here's everything I've done since to try and fix this, checking if it still continues to throttle after trying each thing: Reinstalled all drivers and ensured Windows is up to date. Cleaned the fans Repasted the CPU and GPU Definitely needed this. Old paste was crusty. Couldn't repaste the VRMs as didn't have suitable paste, so left the old one. Reinstalled Windows and all drivers. Lowered the CPU TDP Only lowering the TDP to 10W (!) using Ryzen Controller somewhat helped the problem and brought me into ~40fps or so. That is still not good enough, and obviously I wouldn't want to be limiting my TDP to 10W to do anything. Ryzen Controller also doesn't play well with Riot Vanguard so I won't be able to play Valorant with the mates. Here's HWInfo screenshots of CPU and GPU taken when it starts to throttle and fps drops. The GPU is still throttling even though the CPU is at 10W TDP. How can I diagnose this further? Is my laptop just done? Or could the VRMs have anything to do with it and I should try repasting them too? Any and all help appreciated.
  9. The one closer to the router has Ethernet. The other in the middle of the apartment is setup as a wireless repeater. I've posted screenshots of the channel survey on Imgur here.
  10. We're currently running two AeroHive/ExtremeNetworks AP30 units, but they struggle to get good speeds at the opposite end of the apartment where I want to set up my workstation. I've drawn a quick map of the apartment to make it easier. Imgur link here. The 'printer' represents the router where the network comes in the house, the half circles represent wall sockets along with the Aerohive units, and the laptop is where I'm looking to setup my workstation. Can you advise on the best way to upgrade this network? This is a rental so I can't be running wired connections in the walls, and need something without antennae per se because of the cat who will likely chew on them. Would an upgraded mesh network be better or just getting one powerful router? I've been recommended Ubiquities Dream Machine, which looks ideal, but at $300 it's a bit pricy. If a mesh network would work better here, is there anything sleek that plugs right in to a (European) socket, a la Ubiquiti BeaconHD? EDIT: Upon further reading, the AP30 units are supposed to be pretty good. Is their positioning just bad?
  11. Ah, didn't know it'd work that way - thought they have different software standards so would return different colours or something. What about the fact there is a fan/RGB controller the case comes with? Should I disconnect everything from it and connect directly to the motherboard, or if I connect the controller to the motherboard it should work the same?
  12. Hi everyone, Hope everyone is doing good! I'm getting most of the parts for my new PC today and tomorrow and have a question about co-ordinating all my RGBs. The three things with RGB on them will be the strips on the NZXT H510i case, some lights on my Asus ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming motherboard, and my Corsair Vengeance PRO RGB RAM. My question is will there be a way to control and sync all the RGBs in one place, or will I have to do them all manually in all their respective software? Thanks!
  13. I bought a used PC and I'm looking to upgrade the RAM to 16GB, as there is currently only one 8GB stick. Looking inside, it looks like the stick in there was actually taken off of a Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 2x8GB kit. Will it be okay if I buy a CMK8GX4M1D3000C16 stick considering the different CAS timings and the different model numbers? Or should I look to buy a 2x8GB kit and sell the stick that is currently in my PC? Thanks!
