  1. I want to set up a storage server with ESXI following this guide. I have an Asus asus z10pc-d8/sas motherboard that has an on-board LSI SAS 3008 controller and 10 sata ports. I only really need to use one or the other for my storage server but it would be nice if I could use both. So I have a couple of questions about setting it up. From what I can tell I would have to pass the bare disks directly to the VM to set up something like the guide, is that right? I know the most common way of passing bare disks to a VM is to pass through a LSI controller that is flashed to IT mode. Would that be the easiest option in my case? Or would it be easier to pass-through drives form the chipset sata? I can’t find any information on flashing an onboard LSI controller on an Asus board. Would the process be close enough to a LSI controller on a Supermicro motherboard? If not is there a guide somewhere specific to Asus boards or this board? Assuming it’s possible to flash it all, where would I get the firmware? I checked Asus’s website and I didn’t find it and their support was not especially helpful.
  2. With the new paste the max GPU temp is 71 degrees, HBM max is 78 degrees and Hotspot max is 83 degrees. My card seems to be throttling at 71 degrees. It will clock all the way up to 1600MHz but the second the GPU hits 71 degrees it starts to throttle and the clocks drop considerably. Most of the time it's clocked around 1100-1250MHz as it hits 71 degrees. I have tried setting the fan to 100% and it does boosts the clocks I get overall but they fall once the card gets to 71 degrees. I have a Haf 912 and the airflow is good enough it shouldn't be a problem. The graphics card isn't even getting that hot because it throttles so early. I have also tried about every driver from since Q3 2018 and they all have had the same problem. I've used the registry edit to switch to gaming mode and it still didn't help.
  3. Sorry for the late response. It doesn't even hold the base clock the whole time. I have reapplied thermal paste and it reduced the hot spot temperature and the HBM memory temperatures but the card still throttles at 71 degrees. I have DDUed and tried just about every driver from the last year to try and get the mode switching working but it seems to be the same on all the drivers I've tested.
  4. I have a Vega FE and when ever I play a game or run a benchmark it seems to be thermal throttling. I have tested several different games/benchmarks and I have noticed weird behavior. First whenever my card gets to 71-72 Degrees it starts to throttle. I have tried running the fan at max speed and it helps the performance because it doesn't throttle as much but it still throttles when it hits 71. It has never gone over 72 degrees but the HBM gets into the mid 80s and the hotspot temperature is in the 90s. The fan tach also reports impossibly high RPM (1.5 Million) when it's maxed out. The fan RPM is reported properly when it's not maxed so I'm not really sure what's going on there. I have reinstalled drivers way to many times trying to get the driver mod switching to work so I don't think that's the issue. Which temperature throttles the GPU? I thought it was just the GPU temperature but i'm wondering if the hotspot temperature is causing the throttling. What could be causing the fan to report such high RPM when it reports properly the rest of the time? Any help solving this would be awesome.
  5. I just opened up my computer and I noticed some white stuff on my AIO. I'm not sure if it's corrosion or just some sort of sealant. Is it safe to use or should I swap it out?
  6. Thanks for the reply! Looks like it was actually the network settings for the VM I was connecting to the pfSense box was trying to access the ISP router instead of pfSense.
  7. How would I start to set that up? Would that be in Systems > Routing? It shows the ISP router's IP in as the WAN_DHCP Gateway but I'm not sure if that's the right thing. Or is it firewall rules? I'm not sure if that is the right thing. My ISP's router only has a couple options. You can set do port forwarding or DMZ and that's about it.
  8. I am trying to set up a pfSense router to use as a separate network from my main network but I am having some problems. I have set up an configured the pfSense router and have it up and running but I can’t seem to get the internet working on it. It is running on a VM in ESXi 6.7 and I have a virtual switch set up that takes in the internet from my ISP’s router into the pfsense VM as the WAN connection. Then another virtual switch going from the pfSense VM LAN into the other VMs.PfSense was getting an IPv6 and IPv4 address but I couldn’t connect to the internet from it. Then I tried putting it in the DMZ of my ISP’s router nothing really changed. When I set up the pfSense box I unchecked the “Block RFC1918 Private Networks” and “Block bogon networks.”My ISP requires the router WAN be set up with VLAN Tag 2 and VLAN priority as 3 so I also tried setting that up while the pfSense box is in the DMZ but with this configuration pfSense doesn’t get any IP addresses. What is the best way to go about this? Should I keep the pfSense box in the DMZ or not? Am I doing something wrong?
  9. Games are stuttering a lot on my friends PC and I'm having trouble figuring out why. I used to use the same exact PC (only difference being the hdds) and I never had any issues in games. Games will freeze momentarily seemingly at random. Final Fantasy 15 has the most issues, it has the stutters more frequently than any other game. It also happens in league of legends and warframe so I don't think it has anything to do with the specs. I've even tried FF 15 on my computer at the same settings and I don't have the same stuttering and I have a 7850. One thing I also noticed, when I downloaded FF 15 on my computer it took about 2 hours but it took 8 hours on my friends computer. Both PCs were on the same network (but not downloading at the same time) but my friends PC had to wait for the disk a lot. I'm wondering if the disk may be causing the problem because when I was using that computer I never had problems with League of Legends or Warframe. What should I test? I thought about using my HDDs in my friends computer to see if the problem still happens. Anything else I should test? Friends PC Specs: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/13612073 i5 2310 8 GB Ram 760 4GB Firecuda 2 TB My PC: i5 3470 16 GB of Ram 7850 2GB
  10. Thanks. I thought it would be ok but I just wanted to make sure.
  11. I accidentally applied +1000 MHz Overclock over remote desktop and of course it crashed. I don't have access to the computer right now so I can't turn it off. Could anything me damaged if it is left like that for a about 5 hours? The GPU fan is set to 100%
  12. I have an Asus p8h77-v motherboard with a xeon 1270 and a set of 4x4GB Corsair vengeance RAM. The ram is rated for 1600 MHz but when I load the XMP profile my computer won't boot. I have tried increasing the Dram voltage, I have set the frequency and timings manually and I updated my bios but I still can't get it to boot. I have had no problems running at the default 1333MHz but for some reason it wont boot with 1600MHz.
  13. I have a E3 1270 and I've been looking for a motherboard for it but I've noticed on a lot of boards they say they support the e3 1230 but don't list the 1270. Would a 1270 most likely work in these motherboards considering the 1270 and 1230 are very similar? If a CPU posts in a motherboard does that mean it's compatible or is there more to it than that?
  14. It's lga 1155. I've looked into getting a new board but it's basically cheaper if I can just buy a xeon and use it on this board. I used this to get it to boot. I pulled out one of the reserved pins and put it in the slot where the pin broke. Unfortunately it isn't a permanent solution because it won't stay in contact if the computer is bumped or moved to much. I basically have to reseat the pin between every boot.
  15. Recently I discovered that my motherboard had a couple pins bent. I fixed a couple of them but one of them broke. I am able to set the pin so the computer boots but it is really finicky and I have to do it basically every time I boot. I found online that the pin the is broken is a iGPU power pin. I have a graphics card so once my computer boots it doesn't matter if the pin isn't set. My bios is set to use the PCIe graphics card first but my computer still won't boot without the pin in place. I'm wondering if there is a way to disable the check for the iGPU so it will post without it? I know there are some CPUs that don't even have integrated graphics like the xeons could those possibly work? Any ideas would be appreciated, Thanks.
  16. Right now I have 3 monitors, 2 on this stand and 1 on another desk but soon I'm going to have to move my setup and I won't have a spot for my third monitor anymore and my desk isn't big enough for all 3 so I'm wondering if there's a way I can add my third monitor to my stand with an extra arm or something. I'd rather not spend too much money on anything but I'd like to keep the three monitors if possible.
  17. I tried doing that before but when I try to select the partition to recover it says "You are not allowed to undelete partitions when four Primary partitions exist on one disk."
  18. After the anniversary update the partition on my third hard drive isn't detected by windows 10. I wasn't dual booting or anything and the drive wasn't formatted and it shows up fine on my other computer. The partition even shows up in some third party partitioning software but I can't get windows to detect it. What should I do? I thought about using a partition recovery tool but I'm not sure if it would restore everything the same as it was before and that would be preferable.
  19. It's somebody else's drive and they just want me to back everything up.
  20. I have a SSD that has OSX installed on it and I want to back it up to a hdd then wipe it. Is there a way to clone it on windows or would I have to use a mac? I only have 1 USB HDD thing so I can't transfer it directly if I have to use a Mac (all the macs at my house are laptops). It is small enough that I could copy it to the HDD of the laptop then transfer it to another drive but I don't know how to do that. I also have a 2TB Airport that I thought might be useful but I don't know how to back it up to that either. Thanks for any help!
  21. I told somebody I got a new graphics card and they said "Does that make the pixels bigger?"
  22. I have an M90 and it has an issue with scrolling, whenever I scroll it will sporadically scroll in the opposite direction. I don't remember how long it's had this issue (I've been just clicking the scoll wheel instead for some time now) and I'm pretty sure I don't have warranty anymore. I have the newest firmware, I've tried using different USB ports, I've tried blowing it out with compressed air, I've changed the amount of lines each scroll moves but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know how to fix this? Should I open it up and try cleaning it out or checking if something is out of place? Or is this a hardware issue that I can't fix?
  23. The nice thing about the Alienware is I don't really have to worry about it being stolen or broken cause I've been using it for a while and I can trust my cousin but I'm definitely going to check out the Asus. What are some good red flags to look for to avoid buying a broken or stolen laptop? I'll obviously turn it on and test it out a bit but are there any specific things I should look out for?
  24. My budget is $500 but both laptops are $450. And I'm in the US.
