  1. Almost all my parts are in... Just waiting on my second Samsung 970 EVO Plus and my Hyte Y60 to get here but I'm excited to share Upgrading my 3900X photography/gaming rig to AM5 more or less, while moving it into a new home because the 680X is a pain to maintain (too much difficult disassembly and needing a second person to hold the AIO while i remove the front filter is tiresome) Case: Hyte Y60 White/Black Motherboard: Asus ROG Crosshair X670E HERO CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X CPU Cooler: Corsair H150i Elite LCD RAM: 32gb G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo DDR5 6000 CL30 Storage: 2x 2TB Samsung 970 EVO nVME, 2x 960gb Corsair MP510 nVME, 2x 5TB Toshiba HDDs GPU: eVGA RTX 3080 10gb (Original, not LHR) FTW3 PSU: eVGA Supernova 1000 watt T2 with white cablemod cables Fans: Planning to use 2 Noctua PPC Industrial 3000rpm 140mms in the bottom as intake, 2 of my LL140s on the side as intake, 1 LL120 as exhaust on the rear and the 3 120mm ML120s that came with the AIO as top exhaust. Was debating on making the side exhaust as well as those PPCs are very strong intakes and if they're exhausts they'd hopefully pull the hot hair off the GPU out the side...but that could create a deadzone where the CPU isnt getting fresh air (Suggestions appreciated, I already own the fans in question and yes I want the visible ones to be RGB) Color theme is likely some shade of purple or blue as those tend to be the colors I go for for anything these days.
  2. This. Maybe if you really wanna be serious about it I'd consider looking at something from say, Sony or Canon because they're commonly used in the higher end video space, get used to their names for various controls/menu functions and stuff. But overall ergonomics are probably the biggest factor. an A6000 shouldnt be too expensive last I looked and is still a very solid little camera. Your money should go primarily to lenses, Not so much the camera body. I'd stick to a mirrorless as opposed to a DSLR because DSLRs are somewhat dying off at this point.
  3. I'd throw it all together and just slot in the 3060 Ti when you get one After all its also a good idea to make sure there are no issues while you're still within return policies and such and you can still enjoy your shiny new CPU in some tasks without a better GPU to go with it Maybe when AMD launches the 6600/6700 or whatever things will improve slightly
  4. At the time I bought my X27 I was seriously nervous about dropping $1500 on a monitor, but after living with it for 2 years..yeah no regrets. I wanted something with solid color accuracy and pixel density for photo editing AND a high refresh for gaming. I do not like ultrawides very much I considered 2 monitors, but what sold me on the X27 was the fact that by the time I got 2 solid monitors, a good 4k one for photo editing and a good 1440p high refresh one for gaming, i was at more than $1500 at the time with no HDR or anything on top of it. Add to that i dont really have the space for 2 of them and yeah
  5. Games themselves look fine at 1440p, depends on the title, at the end of the 1080 Ti I started bumping a few titles down to 1440p to get acceptable performance and while it looked worse it generally wasnt too bad, Tech like DLSS makes lowering the resolution better because it uses AI upscaling to (in many games) get quite close to full resolution. Not every game supports DLSS but DLSS seems to be coming in most major titles these days Going to full 144hz does create some problems, I run mine at 120 instead, if you do HDR content you have to choose between 10 bit color at 98hz or 8 bit at 120, I tend to leave it at 8 bit because most -games- do not support 10 bit color even in HDR Yes there are some HDR games that look worse in HDR vs SDR, usually ones where they do it as a tickbox with no thought (ESO and Sekiro come to mind off the top of my head) the good news is you can always just try both and use whichever you prefer Competitive, it depends, most competitive titles run at high framerates at least at 4k, I find 4k advantageous in Apex as i can pick out squads at really long range, same with warzone. Others might disagree here though. Ive also played them on a 300hz laptop and I honestly had situations id prefer one over the other Fan noise obviously depends on person and example, mine is inaudible, my PC is louder (and i have a quiet pc)
  6. Modern AAA titles it can be hard, but usually ones where you need/want 120 its easy enough to get to, CoD Black ops Cold War for example easily gets there with DLSS enabled and looks a treat, Doom Eternal is extremely well optimized and gets 4k 120 easily, Apex, League, etc, all easily exceed 120fps. the 3080 has absolutely made the X27 shine (I started off with a 1080 Ti when I bought it and that could be struggle city a lot of the time). Also yes, if you need to turn the res down to 1440p in the future or something, you do still get 120hz, so its kind of a best of both worlds thing Lets see..for HDR titles? Hitman 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Star Wars Squadrons, Microsoft Flight Sim, Gears of War 5, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Horizon Zero Dawn, Metro Exodus, Doom Eternal, Battlefield V, CoD Black Ops Cold War, AC Valhalla, Jedi Fallen Order... pretty much EVERYTHING in HDR I've stuck on this thing looks amazing, its second only to my LG C8 OLED. Flashbangs do tend to hurt the eyes however Even if the game lacks HDR, the fact the monitor has full array local dimming means you do get a noticeable boost in contrast, dark scenes and black levels are very solid. there CAN be some haloing around HUD objects in HDR but in SDR its pretty much a non issue. Ideally, I keep the monitor in SDR mode in windows when I'm doing normal browsing/non HDR games and then flick it into HDR to go play in HDR Downsides to HDR are screenshots right now (the Xbox Game Bar is the ONLY thing I've found that will actually take screenshots in HDR games correctly..ish) and if you use MSI Afterburner it has a bad tendency to crash/go haywire in HDR, GeForce Experience's overlay however works fine The G7 is a very nice monitor too, but for only $300 more? Yeah I'd get the UQ. The HDR performance of an HDR1000 screen with proper FALD is just a whole other level. The difference between 120 and 240hz IS noticable, but I'd make the argument for it being diminishing returns type of thing. Most new games are supporting HDR and if I had to pick I'd take a proper HDR implementation any day over the boost in refresh rate
  7. I'm running the Acer Predator X27 which uses the same panel ABSOLUTELY go for the PG27UQ... as for fan noise i have never heard the one in mine. the 3080 runs things AMAZINGLY well on it on top of it, you can get 4k 120 in quite a few titles pretty easily and the HDR performance is stunning
  8. Theres so many factors i could list that can be summed up as "it depends on what two monitors you are considering" For example, there is more to a good monitor than just refresh rate. if the 240hz monitor is VA for example it could have far better black levels and contrast and thus far better image quality. On the other hand it could be TN and the viewing angles and color reproduction could be awful To me, I like a blend of good refresh rate, contrast ratio and color reproduction. I am a sucker for a GOOD HDR implementation, I will gladly pay (and encourage others to spend on) those features because to me they add to the immersion of anything you play As for 144 vs 240, its diminishing returns, there IS a difference as usually the 240hz screen has better pixel response times so it can still look better than a 144hz screen even if you're not maxing out that 240hz refresh rate all the time. Its a pet peeve of mine I guess. I see a lot of people drop $800 on a 3080 and refuse to spend a decent amount of a really nice monitor that will stay with you for a while, or are still using an old TN or older IPS screen when theres some very good VA panels available now that would give better image quality
  9. Definitely go for an SSD over an HDD, I'm not sure about UK pricing on specific models but either add a 500gb SSD to that (About $60 in the US) or go for a 1TB SSD. I've never been a huge fan of the "120gb just for windows" thing, but I also run my system 24/7 so boot time isnt a big deal to me To me, I always try to think ahead just a bit when it comes to the PSU, Go for a good quality unit from eVGA, Seasonic, Corsair etc and always give yourself some room to grow. Yes you have a RTX 3060 today but maybe in a year theres a kicking deal on a used 3080 or something, in the US the difference between a 650W B5 and a 750W B5 is only $10 and I think its a good $10 to spend just to give yourself some extra growth.
  10. LOL Yeah I was gonna say.. Im not sure i really wanna disturb the LM, I've NEVER worked with LM before and I have no idea how its done under there. I assume Asus has some masking on it like last year to stop it going anywhere it shouldnt, but never know what happens if i pull the thing apart Sorry to disappoint!
  11. Cause I need a new laptop and I dont mind being a guinea pig, Plus Best Buy return policy is pretty solid if I hit any issues Specifically I ordered the Ryzen 9 5900HS/3070 model. I'll be happy to answer any questions on it when I get it/review it for everyone if they like
  12. Right now I'd wait, if what AMD says is true? Then the Ryzen is definitely the way to go. Hard to anticipate stock right now however, I mean, I got my 3900X on launch day last year with no issues whatsoever..but after the 3080 if we end up with sneakerbots going after them as well it could get dicey.. I also would hope that AMD has been watching and is going to take steps to make sure everything goes better than before PCIe 3 vs 4 right now isnt making a big difference, but I'd argue that once we start seeing directstorage games coming out that are going to be streaming data off the SSD constantly right into the GPU that it might make a very large difference. I ponder if theres a way someone could test this (like some kind of large storage transfer over PCIe while gaming?)
  13. Yes! You just pay the difference for the higher end card In fact Jacob at evga was even nudging people to do this if they had say, sold their old card in hopes of scoring a 3080 and couldn't so they could get their rig back up and running ASAP and get put in a line for a 3080
  14. Benchmark: Time Spy - 16,465 https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/51362000? Time Spy Extreme - 8,263 https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/51362368? R9 3900X + RTX 3080 FTW3 +113 Core/+200 Memory Not done tuning it but im taking a break to go actually play stuff on it, I think I have a bit more in it
  15. My eVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 just arrived so I'm eager to show my rig off Technically its been up and running since last year when I started the build, I've just been waiting for a worthy upgrade to my 1080 Ti since then, and well, I finally have it Specs: Corsair Crystal 680X eVGA 1000watt T2 PSU w/ CableMod Modmesh sleeved cables in white Corsair H115i Platinum Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master AMD Ryzen 3900X 32gb Corsair Dominator RGB Platinum DDR4-3600 CL16 eVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra 2x Corsair MP510 960gb NVMe SSDs 1x Samsung 860 Evo 1tb M.2 SATA SSD 2x Toshiba 5tb 7200rpm HDDs On the desk: Acer Predator X27 4k 144hz HDR1000 Monitor Razer Huntsman Elite Razer Mamba Hyperflux Schiit Vali 2 Tube Amp Phillips Fidelio X2 + Sennheiser PC37x Razer Base Station Chroma Saitek X52 Pro Joystick (Thats the not-themed Green lights you see) I have yet to bench it with the 3080, but when I was running my 1080Ti I managed a Time Spy score of 10,633 with 10,308 Graphics/12,948 Physics https://www.3dmark.com/spy/14168762 Only slight issues I have with it are the fact i had to buy a Phanteks 8-pin white sleeved extension that doesnt match the Cablemods ones for the 3080, I swear I had bought an extra 8 pin last year but apparently I did not and they were completely out of stock at the moment Its not super obvious with it on at least, its actually more obvious it uses a clear comb versus a black one, I will likely swap that out with a proper cable mod cable when I can... Beyond that cable managing the joystick is a pain in the you know what. The lights are set to rotate purple on the outside, static blue on the inside, the GPU alternates between purple and blue thus the photos looking different. The headphone stand looks rediculously bright in the photos, its not in reality The darker photos are closer to how the room is usually kept
  16. I will say the drop last night seemed bigger, it seemed like a lot of folks got lucky I really hope that AMD has payed attention to this entire ordeal and learned from it so RDNA2 goes smoothly. Competition is good for all after all
  17. It is a 4 slot card according to a Gigabyte rep lol I did manage to nab a eVGA FTW3 from Newegg earlier when they went live, I more or less just happened to refresh at the right time Newegg at least seems to refresh their stock at 6-6:30PM, Fridays seem to get more cards than other days. But this is anecdotal Good luck I'm very much looking forward to mine
  18. I'd probably start looking into upgrading my CPU and doing a new build with a better PSU if I were you... Like, IMHO when it comes to the 3080, if you're not running at the minimum AMD 2000-series or Intel 8th gen its time to upgrade that first, even at 4k thats just getting very long in the tooth. Also when it comes to PSU I'd definitely not try it on a 650W, especially not a 3 year old one -edit- and I see you said BFV and I can tell you that was one game that smoothed out considerably when I moved from my OC'd 6700k to my 3900X (not that you need to go that far lol) Games that take advantage and benefit from >4 cores are getting way more common and with the new consoles about to drop I definitely see 6 cores being the new 4 going forward
  19. Update, Got off the phone with Alienware because they still hadnt contacted me back after i provided the requested information for the return They told me hopefully 1-2 days and ill get a response. I made it pretty darn clear that im not very happy about nobody contacting me in the specified time. The good news is they're gonna dispatch the replacement with the label supposedly, so i get the replacement and send the original one back at the same time which sounds a lot better than shipping it back and waiting who knows how long for my replacement to arrive.
  20. Yeah... I'm not sure where. The closest noise I can think of (Which is showing my age) was when my 52X CD-ROM drive blew up my starcraft brood war CD, i thought maybe a fan blade was broken loose inside there or something. The obstruction could be on the other side of the fan, but that would require pulling the motherboard out to investigate which is way more disassembly than I'm doing on a brand new laptop. Given the other reviews for the GE75 I think its just a very popular configuration, its very well specified for its price. Seems I've just been unlucky.. the M15 on the other hand the Alienware Reddit is full of people complaining about delay delay delay, I'm lucky to have gotten one, its just unfortunately not right
  21. Finally decided to up and replace my old GS73VR which just doesnt work for me anymore as a late birthday gift to myself somewhere around the end of April. This is as TLDR as i can make it Ordered a GE75 Raider, one of the nice new ones with the 10750, 2070 Super and 300hz display Received it mid-may. Boot it up and the screen has a fairly rediculous and unacceptable amount of bleed/flashlighting in 3/4 corners extending halfway through the panel (Probably one of the -worst- LCDs I've seen quality wise, it affected everything) Go to return it, cant do an exchange because they didn't have another one in stock and they couldn't like, reserve one from an incoming shipment, No ETA on when theyd get one back in stock (and for the record, I havnt seen it come back in stock at Newegg since) Given the lack of any ETA and such I looked into alternatives. Alienware launched the new M15 and M17 and they offered some good deals on them, Cool I think, I had an awesome Alienware M17x R4 that I adored. This should be great. Plus I can spec it the way I want with Win 10 Pro. Pick out an Alienware M15 R3 with the 10750/2070 Super/300hz display, its about $80 or so more than the MSI because of some deals but came with Win 10 Pro and some other niceties Received it the 11th, which was when Dell said id get it when I placed the order. Awesome. Boot it up, screen looks nice, start setting it up...and it starts buzzing. Loudly. Very. Very. Loudly. Mess around with it for a while trying to trace whats going on, trace it back to the CPU fan, sounds like something is stuck in it. Try looking into the vents but cant see much of anything, thinking maybe one of the fan wires is hitting the blades or something. End up in a semi-painful series of phone calls with Dell that ate 4 hours of my night. Now waiting on my exhange to be finalized and to get the shipping label and everything. Pretty sure its not a coil whine problem, the noise is directly related to the CPU fan speed. The CPU fan also seems to not be moving as much air as it should and when I ran Dell's diagnostic thing it said something like 1800rpm which sounds low for a laptop style fan (My old MSI was like, 5k-6k) The box also had a good hit on the corner that corresponds to the CPU fan side which I feel might be the reason. I cant stand the noise however and given its present any time the CPU fan turns on, even at what would be a silent/barely audible speed (IE you fire up youtube or something very minor) its not exactly something I can live with. And I'm just gutted and annoyed and disappointed. I have no idea when I'll receive the replacement M15 either, I'm still waiting on the shipping label. -edit-To be clear, my frustration is less with the supply issues due to human malware and that and more to "buying 2 laptops and getting 2 duds that had to be exchanged" the wait times suck, i wont lie, but it feels so much worse when you're waiting a week+ for shipping something back, more time to get a refund, a lot of time on the phone and are now sitting here wondering if you're going to get a third dud... -edit 2- and yes I took the bottom panel of the Alienware off to check and i could not see anything in the fan and the wires were not hitting the fan blades, I did not feel disassembling it further was a great idea given its a brand new laptop under warranty
  22. Normally i go for 1440p in most titles, it just doesnt help the abysmal pixel response times unfortunately... Yeah I kinda thought after "yeah this is probably a thing" the question is going to be how to even get in there and whether theres a ton of glue and stuff.. it might be better to simply leave it untouched and sell it to someone else to fund a laptop better suited for myself rather than brick it lol But I like considering options -edit- Wow a quick search and i can get the panel for $68! That...really seems like its worth a shot.....
  23. I have an MSI GS73VR which unfortunately was configured with the 4k display option... Now, its a beautiful display for say, watching youtube or TV or something, but its absolutely terrible for gaming (Terrible pixel response times, even for a 60hz display) and the 1060 is just not up to the task of delivering playable framerates in most titles, not helped by the fact it just runs very very hot even after I fixed it It was also available with a 144hz 1080p display option however, and while I'm PRETTY sure its not possible I figured I'd ask anyways if it would be feasible (and not horrifically expensive) to source and trade out the 17" panel. I'm not terribly fond of the laptop mind you but I figured if i can -cheaply- (Say under 200?) trade the panel out then maybe its worth hanging onto a bit longer... Otherwise just going to hold out to drop the cash on something newer and better suited for my usage
