There are Core i7's nearly identical to this Xeon. it's not because it's a Xeon that's causing this, it's because it's a 14 year old Xeon. The platform itself is what's holding this back.

Per their policy, Intel does not honour warranties on second hand processors, and typically only warrenties the chips for 3 years.

svmlegacy reacted to WereCat in can I mix different kits of ddr4?
In theory it's okay. In practice it's hit and miss.

The most important thing to understand is to be absolutely certain that the RAM in the different kit uses the same ICs. Because while the kit may appear to be the same... it may be using different components. So in fact, it will not be the same kit and you may run into issues.

For example you get Corsair Vengeeance kit now and then get another one 6 months later. You're almost guaranteed to end up with very different RAM because Corsair likes to source chips from Samsung and Micron while slapping it on the "same kit" under the same name.
And even if both kits have for example Micron chips... they still may differ in which kind of chips they have. For example Micron rev-E is very different vs Micron rev-B especially in subtimings, etc...

EVEN THAT should work... but then it comes down to what motherboard and which BIOS you have, etc... every manufacturer handles the auto settings differently and it may run fine or you may run into issues.

If you are able to set some stuff manually and not afraid of doing so and willing to spend some time on it if you run into issues, chances are you can make it run just fine almost always.

The same kit does not offer a guarantee of it working. Might as well save the money.

Even in ideal sense, you may need to reduce the speed somewhat to support the extra memory. Pinnacle Ridge's memory controller is not the best - update your BIOS before installation to give the best chances.

I have a pretty low opinion of Gigabyte already, but I don't think any of the major brands are above trying to evade honoring warranties.

There's no objective best for Ivy Bridge at 35 W. If you need multithreaded throughput, the 3632QM is a very nice chip, but it will not deliver the same single core performance as a 3540M. It's also noteworthy that the 3540M has a higher boost frequency on the iGPU, which is important as well.

Generally, the Core i7-3540M will be the best performer, unless you need pure multi-threaded performance.

Usually no. In my experience (Toshiba, not Asus), the machine will not POST with a higher TDP CPU installed.

svmlegacy reacted to Middcore in Are proper motherboard reviews economically viable?
The stuff you're talking about that would be the basis of a "proper" motherboard review are functionally irrelevant to ~95% of users.

Does the board have the right socket for the CPU you want? Does the chipset have the features you want? Does the board have the I/O you want? Do you care about WiFi? Nice-to-haves like BIOS flashback and debug codes?

Answer these questions and you end up with a board that you will be perfectly happy with most of the time. You will gain nothing from worrying about things like signal integrity.

So, yes, the types of review you're talking about are economically unviable, and if people could be convinced to watch them it would just lead to a lot of insufferable hand wringing over things most of them would never notice in actual use.

CMK32GX5M2B5200C40 - JEDEC profile is 4800 MHz on this kit. 5200 MHz is only achieved via XMP overclock. This is normal and expected behavior.

This is likely unrelated to your issue.

A hardware issue is more likely to cause general instability and hard locks rather than crashes to desktop.

Apple could have done anything to the firmware, the safest upgrade would be a i7-7700, with a chance of a 7700K working.

While benchmarking, I did notice my first core running much harder than the others. I came across a tip to not run CPU 0 in task affinity for CS:GO, and it boosted my FPS by about 5%. I assume the game's architecture just doesn't know how to take advantage of the extra cores of modern CPUs, so you have to force it to care pretty much. Still not even close to all core performance, but definitely closer. Little things like that make me look forward to CS2.

And yes, the memory was very much the solution. I've had another stick of 16GBs in my PCPP list for a while now, and now I have even more reason to get it.

svmlegacy reacted to CommanderAlex in Need help pinpointing a bottleneck
Ryzen and dual-channel memory are key factors that influence performance. It can be a pretty significant jump in performance going from single to dual-channel for Ryzen.

EDIT: Also, don't forget that buying RAM in pairs is better than buying individual modules for improved compatibility.

2000 series is getting long in the tooth though with performance like what @svmlegacypointed out in their post so it's definitely something to consider too, but at least this helps minimize performance hits then until you can upgrade the CPU platform.

The Gigabyte B450M DS3H power delivery isn't the best so I wouldn't want to push them to run a 5800X3D. You'd really have to get a B550 motherboard with good VRMs (check out the motherboard VRMs tier list in my signature). Also if considering, a 12600K and Z690 motherboard may also be an alternative to a 5800X3D if prices in your region are still high with relatively comparable performance.

My guess is that the 2700X's single core perfomance is holding it back, as most people with that CPU are in the 200 - 280 FPS range. The memory configuration isn't great either, and may be playing into it.

Montior each thread's usage rather than the total CPU, as most games will never fully saturate 16 threads simultaneously.

This is exactly what they're planning on doing. Use a smaller engine running at its peak efficiency load & speed, and use the battery as temporary energy storage to use when high power is demanded (Acceleration)

When Bloomfield and Gulftown launched, there were no 8 GB unbuffered DIMM's available. Thus the system was only ever tested & approved with 4 GB DIMM's. Usually 8 GB DIMM's work, allowing you to use 48 GB of RAM.

288 GB is only available on systems which use registered memory (Server applications).
