  1. Another vote for building your own. Main advantages are cost and the ability to run more services in the future if you want, like Plex and Nextcloud.
  2. If you want it to be silent, please don't get Seagate Ironwolf drives. Those things run hot and loud. No complaints other than that, but not great for a silent build.
  3. Hardware Motherboard: Gigabyte H370 Aorus Gaming 3 WiFi CPU: Intel Core i5 8400 Cooling: Noctua NH-U12S, 3 x Fractal Design 140mm fans. This build was put together in a hurry because my previous server (an ancient Xeon 3050 system bought used for $40) was crashing due to faulty hardware (I suspect RAM), and giving me errors like these: Cue me frantically shutting it down to prevent data loss and trying to gather the parts for a new system as quickly as possible. The 140mm rear fan and Noctua CPU cooler were also added later due to parts availability. Backup: Monthly encrypted offsite backup of essential data to Google Drive (Unlimited). Photos:
  4. Can you try to mount one of those shares manually and post the error (if any)? For example: mount -v -t cifs -o credentials=/home/foster/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,gid=1000,uid=1000,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 //192.168.1.9/Multimedia /home/foster/Media/Multimedia
